AIT reporter held in custody on alleged orders of AIG Joseph Mbu

A senior reporter with African Independent Television, AIT, Amaechi Anakwue, has allegedly been detained for over 8 hours now in abuja on the orders of Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Mbu for referring to him as 'controversial' during a TV programme.

According to AIT, Anakwue was invited to Mr Mbu's office this afternoon where he was immediately detained. See the statement the management of AIT released on their Facebook page below..
"The management of DAAR communications owners of AIT, Raypower, Faaji FM and DAAR Sat has demanded the unconditional and immediate release of its senior correspondent Amaechi Anakwue who is presently in detention following a order from Joseph Mbu, AIG Zone 7.  Joseph Mbu had ordered the arrest of the ace journalist for calling him 'controversial' during a TV programme."
Joseph Mbu was the Commissioner of Police in Rivers state who had a strained relationship with the state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi before he was transferred to Abuja where he served as the FCT Commissioner before recently being promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police.

  42. In what civilised country other than Nigeria will the AIG of Police detain a reporter for freedom of expression/speech. Nevertheless, the position he occupies is not on merit so how would you expect him to act especially when he does not understand that he is accountable to the people. He has been and remains controversial since his name surfaced in Rivers State brouhaha.
By their works, we shall know them!

If he is truly serious about policing instead of playing fetch with Abuja politicians then, AIG Joseph Mbu should provide a four-point agenda to curb crime and guarantee security for Nigerians. He should also write a detailed three year's plan for the Nigerian Police with respect to welfare, equipment, communication, recruitment, training and salary. While at it, he should elaborate on how he intend to rehabilitate officers injured on duty and families of officers killed in active duty. Esprit the corps!
By their works, we shall know them!!

  43. This man apparently has a thing against all persons named Amaechi. Having failed woefully to cut the one in Rivers State to size he must now be relishing the opportunity to squelch an inconsequential smaller version, an "ordinary" reporter in Abuja. Daar Communications'll do well to hand a non-Amaechi his brief in the future.

  74. Igbo crazy By Kenneth C Cole [An igboman] Wrote I don’t really know the reason why we
Igbos are hardcore supporters of GEJ even
when it’s obvious that he has failed everybody.
I have observed that Igbos defend GEJ even
when his own people IJAW are condemning
him. Have u forgotten the Nigeria governors forum
election in which Rotimi Amechi got 19 votes
while Jonah Jang got 16?…GEJ refused to
recognise Amaechi for reasons best known to
him. Have u also forgotten the fuel subsidy?..were u
nt happy when u bought a litre of fuel for #65?
Just lately, the price of gas also increased. Are
we not all suffering it? When Sanusi Lamido revealed the whole story
about un-remitted oil money, GEJ sacked him
and we igbos were seriously calling Sanusi
names just because he is a Northerner even
though we knew that sanusi was right… TODAY, we all have to pay #65 for withdrawing
from an ATM different from d banks we operate
in. Nobody criticised the present CBN gov just
because he is an Igbo man. Let me ask us, didnt
we enjoy using ATM when Sanusi removed
#100 charge? When he became President some of u were
rejoicing that finally a lecturer, teacher and PhD
holder is now a President but under his watch
ASUU went on strike for 6months,ASUP 10
months,COEASU 11 months the longest in
history, which future of thousands of Nigerians youths were toyed with. The most recent one is the $9.3m GEJ took to
South African. Do u know that the money is up
to 1billion naira? In this modern age, what will
make someone to carry that amount of money
from country to country….when did South
Africa become experts in production of fire arms…why didnt they go to Russia if they really
wanted to buy fire arms. Another 1billion naira loan was approved to
fight the same insurggency. Coming down to Igbo land, what has GEJ
done? Enugu Onitsha road and Enugu to Port
hartcourt roads are nothing to write home
about. Just because the election is around the
corner, he remembered 2nd Niger bridge. Talking of Igbo presidency, an Igbo man
cannot become a president under PDP in 2019.
PDP use zonning pattern to pick their
presidential candidate, the zoning is between
North and South and never among all the 6 geo
political regions as many of is think. So what it implies is that after GEJ, the zoning will shift
power to the North. Just after 2011 elections, on 1st january 2012,
GEJ announced the fuel subsidy, saying that he
wanted to use the money to build refineries but
up till now, Nigeria is still importing refined oil
cos non of the refineries is working. Incase u
don’t know, The present govt is planning to remv d remaining subsidy on fuel which means
that u will have to pay #190 for a litre when its
finally removed. Just as He did in 2012 after
winning in 2011, he may also give us a surprise
on 1st jan 2016 if he wins in 2015. Keep sentiments apart and rate the present
govt, u will see that GEJ has failed us. Let’s vote
him out.. Can u remember WAI (war against
indiscipline) in Nigeria? Can u remember the
man that introduced WAI in Nigeria? God bless
u all Am not expecting any insult o because i believe there’s no illiterate here but if there’s
any, let the person show himself. #think #BringBackOursenses
