AIT reporter charged to court for defamation of character by AIG Mbu, Oby Ezekwesili reacts

AIT senior correspondent Amaechi Anakwue was today charged to an Abuja Magistrate court by AIG Joseph Mbu. The senior correspondent is currently facing a Judge for calling Mbu 'controversial' on a TV pragramme. Meanwhile former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili has reacted on twitter...

I love this woman. See more tweets after the cut...

Update: The police have withdrawn the charge of defamation of character filed against Anakwue. The First Information Report, which contained the charge, was withdrawn by the police following which an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court struck it out.

Anakwue was consequently discharged and has since walked out of the court premises a free man

  55. Joseph Mbu, the BULLY and THUG is suing for "defamation" of character? Mbu is a big joke. A dirty character cannot be defamed. It is already soiled / dirty. Mbu's character stinks more than donkey sh!t. Nigerians must galvanise and have him thrown out of office. Joseph Mbu is an usurper and the embodiment of rotten behaviour. He is very ROTTEN and very CORRUPT. Power has gone to his stupid and LOW IQ head. He lacks manners and professionalism. HOW THE HELL DID JOSEPH MBU END UP AS AIG??? HE AND WHOEVER PROMOTED HIM MUST BE SACKED, SHACKLED, MUZZLED AND CAGED. JOSEPH MBU is a danger to the public, really. His impunity, lawlessness and authority stealing must stop permanently. Joseph Mbu is a tyrant. He doesn't get it that the days of autocratic and dictatorial leadership are numbered. He must be taught a big lesson. Amaechi Anakwue should sue Joseph Mbu and the Nigerian Police for punitive damaged for infringing his rights, for causing pain and suffering and for breaching his human rights. Joseph Mbu is extremely drunk with power. I don't care if his father is President Goodluck Jonathan, but Joseph Mbu must be suspended and sacked. He is a big disgrace to the Nigerian Police service and a disgrace to the nation. He has brought the police into serious disrepute. He acts like a thug, looks like a thug and is more than a thug. There is nothing professional about him. The whole country is fed up with him and his antiquated and barbaric behaviour. We want him immediately removed from office. His gross misconduct and abuse of office has gone on for far too long. Joseph Mbu must be sacked, NOW.

  66. Amaechi is one of the best journalists Nigeria has produced, always on point with his analysis and evasive when he tries to dwell on very controversial issues in the polity. He isn't confrontational, why him? Joseph Mbu needs to calm down, not like he was insulted. How is calling someone 'CONTROVERSIAL' defamation of character?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Maybe we can make Mbu feel extremely angry by going on the hash-tag #AwayWithControversialMbu on twitter. Lets make him popular in a negative way so that his descendants will see his deed in years to come after he must have left this world

    ReplyDelete
  68. Like I said earlier, some of this peeps in government are power drunk, why is he feeling some type of way and why has the IG not made any comment, why is he allowing his dogs to run amok. Democracy is new to them but they need to read books and ask around, The lad is allowed to say an AIG is controversial.. mtchew

    ReplyDelete
  69. This is a democracy; where your right stops is where another's begins. Mbu has his own rights as much as Amaechi does. It's good the matter has been charged to court, which is the final arbiter in a democracy. On the face value, I don't think Amaechi's comment should elicit all this dust, yet I think once in a while reckless and disrespectful comments should be met with repressive actions. I also think Ezekwesili is so 'unstateswomanlike' with the tone of her tweets.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think MBU did the right thing by taking the man to court.now let see how the court will handle the matter.
whether the court will praise the man for calling him controversial on a live program.
Remember Nbu has the video of the matter.
I think it is time we Nigerian stop calling people names.
Because the president does not respond to abuse does not mean that others will do the same.
let Amechi proof his point in the court.
    Nbu no get court

    What an assss!!!!!

  75. What is defamation of character in this case, Being called controversial by someone and the next thing for you is to detain the person and charge him to court is simple abuse of power. Let the police boss tell Nigerians how such accusation would have been treated if it had a common man on the street that walk into one of the police stations to report his neighbour of calling him names as we have it in his case. Am sure, they will simply laugh at him. Mbu is doing tis cos he is a police boss, and he has demonstrated really here that he is indeed controversial. So let him know now there are so many now on social app.to be prosecuted for this.

It is only a country like Nigeria where individuals are greater than institutionalized authorities that a controversial Mbu would be allowed to remain in service. He is a bad image to Nigeria Police Force and setting bad precepts for other junior officers.

    ReplyDelete
  77. What that coward and bully, Joseph Criminal Mbu (JCM) did to that innocent journalist is so, so WRONG and must be condemned by everyone.

Why did that horrible thug masquerading as a police man take the law into his own hands and interfere with freedom of speech and freedom of the press?

Any attack on journalists, bloggers or media houses is an attack on all of us. We must not allow it. We must chase all the Joseph Mbu of this world out of power.

The journalist should file a counter claim against Joseph Criminal Mbu (JCM) for malicious prosecution, breach of human rights and false imprisonment.

Defamation is a civil act, not a criminal act. Joseph Mbu is not above the law. He has no right to detain anyone for "DEFAMATION." He needs to go back to nursery school or high school or ANGER MANAGEMENT. He must be summarily and severely dealt with immediately.

Rather than loiter around Abuja and help Madam Peace (Patience Jonathan) to push shopping trolley, carry her handbag, chew bubble gum and gossip, Joseph Mbu should earn his salary like a man and be containerised (like a chimpanzee) to Borno State to face and grapple with BOKO HARAM terrorists, thugs and uncivilised creatures like him

With immediate effect, the IG of police and President Goodluck Jonathan MUST suspend and terminate the employment of Joseph Mbu.

As much as Jonathan tried to compensate him for his role in Rivers state, he still does not understand that it doesn't mean he has to embarrass Jonathan with rubbish. For those of us who weren't really convinced about Gov. Amaechi's accusations, we are now 100% convinced. Nonsense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  83. I beg to dissagree with all of you who are blaming Mbu or whatever the name of that police man is. I can will only blame his employers whoever they are they have failed Nigerians. For a journalist to be arrested for such a trivial accusation in the face of the law is an insult on the collective citizen of Nigeria. The IG must resigned for allowing such act of negligence to happen under him thereby tarnishing the image of President Goodluck Jonathan's government.Maybe the next IG will understand his role and responsibility.
