Police detonate two explosive devices at University of Uyo

The police command in Akwa Ibom said it had detonated two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) found in the male hostel of University of Uyo. Confirming the incident in Uyo on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Etim Dickson, told newsmen that the explosives were home-made.

Dickson, who said that the IEDs were likely produced by science students of the university, said investigations had commenced on the matter.

He assured the students on campus and parents not to entertain any fear about possible breakdown of law and order in the university community.

He said “the incident has been properly taken care of, we urge students and employees of the institution to go about their normal businesses.”

The IEDs were discovered by the campus security squad known as Operatives of Peace on Campus Initiative (PCI).

The Anti-Bomb Squad of the Nigeria Police had on arrival at the students’ hostel detonated the two improved explosive devices and conducted a search round the other hostel rooms.

  15. Dear Linda, the word detonate is not the right one to use here, intact its the opposite. To detonate is to make the explosive go boom! The word you need to us is "Difuse" meaning to disarm. Good night Linda

  16. Bonario you are so daft the story said detonate which means explode can't you read?

  23. But i dont get it, if one detonates a bomb, it means it was blown up, i would think the bomb was disabled or defuse or something like that. i think this error should be corrected as much as possible by bloggers and journalists alike

  27. Linda I guess the word you meant to use was "DEFUSE" & not "DETONATE". "Denonate" means to trigger a bomb into explosion while "DEFUSE" means to disarm a bomb.

  37. Linda, the word "detonate" is becoming something like a stigma in your english. I have said it times without number. To detonate is to blow up while defusing is to deactivate or render it useless! I stand to be corrected if i am wrong, but with my 31 yrs of english i think i am right!

  39. English is doing u strong tin dis days. So if it was detonated, wats d casualty figure? Or u mean diffuse? Ok.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sey you and the police spokesman know that there is a difference between detonatating a bomb & defusing a bomb? To detonate means they've exploded the bomb oh!......well maybe at a safe distance, in the event that they cannot defuse it.......maybe. I however think the word you guys are looking for is defuse.

  41. " Police detonate two explosive devices at University of Uyo"

This means that the police set the bomb off (ie to explode).
I guess you should have used diffuse or disarm not detonate
