Nigeria Police Force refutes Amnesty International report

Read the press release from the Nigeria Police Force below...
The attention of the Nigeria Police has been drawn to an on-line publication entitled ‘Welcome to Hell-Fire’: torture and other ill-treatment in Nigeria.
While we do not question the freedom of Amnesty International to earn its relevance and bread, the Nigeria Police takes serious exceptions to some blatant falsehoods and innuendoes contained in that report.
For one, it smacks of indecency   and intemperate language to liken our dear nation Nigeria, to hell fire. That cannot be true. We believe that Nigeria is a growing nation, green and largely peaceful.

While the Nigeria Police and other operators in the criminal justice sector are undergoing systematic reforms, and aligning themselves with the demands of democracy, there is no gain saying the fact that the Nigeria Police Force has since improved its operational efficiency and effectiveness. Since the dawn of democracy in 1999, the Nigeria Police Force has significantly improved on its human rights records, owing largely to training and re-training, community policing, attitudinal change and structural transformation.

In its report under reference, Amnesty International did admit in its methodology that it visited some Police Formations and interviewed some family members of suspects. At no time in its report, did Amnesty speak or interface with the Police authorities. This obviously shows their disdain and apparent lack of character where the democratic tenets of fair hearing are concerned.

The report covered a seven year period of 2007-2014. I dare say that some of the issues raised have since been dispensed with and settled.

Of a truth, torture or ill-treatment is not, repeat, NOT an official policy of the Nigeria Police.

The Code of Conduct of Officers, as well as our Regulations prohibit torture and incivility to members of the public. We are versed with international best practices, and the dictates of the Nigerian Constitution as regards human rights. So the Police do not routinely torture suspects. It is not systemic or endemic. Whenever instances of human rights abuses are brought to the notice of superintending officers, the offending personnel are promptly sanctioned in line with the laws and regulations. For the avoidance of doubt, Nigeria Police Force has a zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of power. There is no Immunity for impunity in Nigeria Police Force.

Besides, the Nigeria Police is women-friendly. We do not target sex workers, nor routinely adopt rape as a weapon. Instead, the Police has established a family and human trafficking unit to protect the rights of women, children and the vulnerable members of our society.

However, the Nigeria Police Force shall meticulously scan through the document, and investigate any current human rights abuses linked to any officer or formation. Any identified and established case of malfeasance or misconduct shall be treated in line with the laws and regulations.

We crave the indulgence of Amnesty International to, for the first time, furnish the Police with specific details of its allegations to enable us reach the ends of justice for the alleged victims, and to improve our service delivery.

The Nigeria Police Force remains responsive to the yearnings of Nigerians for improved safety and security.

The Police is your helper and friend.

Look out how their statement presented the NPF in a good light, this same police that can kill people because of mere #20 or #50.

  11. In as much as I dnt rili lik amnesty international, NPF are equally lying big time!! Leave all this essay writing and cause effective reform in the force my advice to the IG.

  12. True the NPF is not something you can write home about but I bet you if you read that article; which I haven't, I dare say the way they paint the police will make Nigeria hell literally and figuratively! The same way a British report claimed Abuja was a city of stolen lands, yet America; a largely English speaking country, has states bearing the name of native indians; who are also non-existent cos they were wiped out and also Mexican names! My point? Well sensationalization is such a strange thing in modern media! Anything to gain readership!

  17. Only someone who does not live in Nigeria will believe all this crap written in this Police statement. I prefer armed robbers to Nigerian Police cos the policemen r much more dangerous and a bigger threat to my life and wellbeing.

  23. I believe the only Nigerians that truely believe that the police is their friend are either hardened criminals or politician! As a law abiding citizen, I always feel insecure and unsafe whenever I meet the police anywhere, especially on highways.

  24. Until the NP treat suspects as 'inocent until proven guilty' rather than 'every citizen is a suspect and every suspect is guilty until proven beyond reasonable and intuitive doubts, all bad allegations levelled against the NP can only be understatements. There are simply too many bad eggs in the Force.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A question for the IGP and the NP Commission: How come that so far, there is not one comment here that supports the refutal statement by the police spokesman?
Do Nigerians just hate their police or the police have NOT realy dealt fairly with most inocent citizens?

    ReplyDelete
  26. You hate police because you are criminals.
all over the world Nigerians are known to be. Criminals
so tell me how can criminals ever like police police fired 6 shots to a defenseless teenage guy in America amnesty whatever did not call them devil.
but they can call you anything here because you will always use left hand to point to your fathers house

I am a legal practitioner and from the little I've personally seen in your so called anti-robbery holdings, gosh you can't be human to subject the devil to such physical and psychological torture. Mr PRO no make God curse you. Admit the wrongs and work or righting them.

  39. Police is just like a catalyst Involving them is like fueling a burning bush. They cant be my friend since i don't thrive in illegal or corrupt activities where i can always sort them with money.
The entire system is a flop and needs to be reviewed.

  41. What the Amnesty said is the truth about Nigeria police. You can imagine SARS arresting you on a very flimsy excuses that what they will do first is to seize your phones.
They wont care how your relations will contact you. Then begin a hellish journey of no return if you are unfortunate. Nigerian police needs total overhauling, most of them are animals in human skin. Just only few are enlighten. Amnesty International are absolute right in accessing Nigeria police

  46. Spent 5 days at police army joint task force cell in the 90's . The cell was called hellfire. On the 4th day I made up my mind to try to run for it, is either I got away or I got shot, at least either way the torture will end one way or the other.
