Nigerian doctor who treated Liberian man tests positive to Ebola virus

One of the Nigerian doctors who treated Liberian Patrick Sawyer (pictured right) who died last week in Lagos of Ebola virus, has tested positive to the virus.

The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, revealed this today Monday August 4th and also said that eight people who had first degree contact with the Liberian have been quarantined and are under strict observation.

Now after attending to Sawyer, this doctor, unaware that he'd exposed himself to Ebola, would have gone home to give his wife a kiss and hugged his daughter/son. God help us. More details later...

    3. Yes indeed. This is the worst case of this virus in history. Nigerians are acting like it's something that's happening far away. This pestilence is going to kill millions in our country. From schools to churches we are all in dire risk. The MoH has not released a comprehensive programme to educate people on how to take care. They are depending on Linda Ikeji to do their job for them. This killer is no respecter of age, tribe or bank balance. Just watch how getting a visa to travel abroad is going to prove virtually impossible. Even those hoping to travel to Nigeria will have issues coming back kpali or not.

  22. Linda it is bloody nit wits like you that cause mass hysteria. The doctor in question has been quarantined which means he would not have had the opportunity to be kissing and hugging anyone. Get educated and stop this nonsense. You have a moral duty to pass on accurate info instead of fueling the fire of panic amongst our populace.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually quarantine started after almost 3days of being in contact with the patient. You get your facts right. The good news however is until the patient is symptomatic, he is not very infective so hopefully when he had contact with his family he likely did not spread the disease. Assuming he was quarantined early enough.

    US STATE DEPARTMENT EBOLA ALERT
In order to help our Embassy Community better understand some of the key points about the Ebola virus we have consulted with our medical specialists at the U S State Department and assembled this list of bullet points worded in plain language for easy comprehension. Our medical specialists remind everyone that they should be following the guideline from the center for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation.
    • The suspected reservoirs for Ebola are fruit bats.
    • Transmission to humans is thought to originate from infected bats or primates that have become infected by bats.
    • Undercooked infected bat and primate (bush) meat transmits the virus to humans.
    • Human to human transmission is only achieved by physical contact with a person who is acutely and gravely ill from the Ebola virus or their body fluids.
    • Transmission among humans is almost exclusively among caregiver family members or health care workers tending to the very ill.
    • The virus is easily killed by contact with soap, bleach, sunlight, or drying. A washing machine will kill the virus in clothing saturated with infected body fluids.
    • A person can incubate the virus without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being 5-8 days before becoming ill. THEY ARE NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill.
    • Only when ill does the viral load express itself first in the blood and then in other bodily fluids (to include vomit, feces, urine, breast milk, semen and sweat).
    • If you are walking around you are not infectious to others.
    • There are documented cases from Kikwit, DRC of an Ebola outbreak in a village that had the custom of children never touching an ill adult. Children living for days in small one room huts with parents who died from Ebola did not become infected.
    • You cannot contract Ebola by handling money, buying local bread or swimming in a pool.
    • There is no medical reason to stop flights, close borders, restrict travel or close embassies, businesses or schools.
    • As always practice good hand washing techniques, but you will not contract Ebola if you do not touch a dying person.
    • US EMBASSY
Please share this information with your friends and families and try not to spread panic on social media.

My problem with nigeria as a country is our carelessness n lackadaisical attitudes towards matters as important as this dreaded ebola Disease, hw can we be so loose in this country? No precautions taken, we just let infected person into our shores knowing hw deadly n incurable it is.? Our leaders n every body in Nigeria seem to be very sentimental. N it disturbs me deeply, is it wen we all die from this infection, thats wen they will act with common sense? It beats me hw we play over everything in this country. 72. Linda, it does not matter if he went home and kissed his wife, as long as he was not showing symptoms. Ebola can only be contacted from a very ill ebola patient. It can kill when the body fluid of an ill patient goes into the blood stream of either through the mouth, nose, eyes, ears or broken skin. That is why the highest casualties are among health workers. People should make sure they wash their hands very well and avoid touching the eyes, ears, mouth or putting their hands in their nostrils. Wounds should be covered promptly to avoid infection from the skin.

  130. Ok. They say it can only be contracted if the person is gravely ill. We are religious people. Gravely ill people end up in churches, receiving prayers and drinking from the Holy Communion cup for divine healing. Some of these gravely ill can walk, I assume, if not so, there would be no reason whatsoever for those who had contact with the man in the airplane before he collapsed at the airport to be tested for the next one month. Unless I am told that those who shook hands with and had body contact with him in the plane when he maybe was looking hale and hearty have nothing to worry about, I will take it that the risks are a bit more than what is written down.

  132. @Bonita Islam, you always make sensible comments but this one today is quite senseless. As quick as this virus is spreading, you still wish for it on fellow Nigerians. And its silver or gold have i none not 'not'.
    thanks me later.

  144. I read somewhere that the disease cannot be contracted until the person is acutely heal or start showing symptoms.so I hope d man came to d hospital immediately he noticed something. He wouldn't want to jeopardize d life of his family member. They r about two with the symptoms as I heard last wk

  145. you are right he went home kissed his wife etc, but be careful not to cause people to panic as the disease cannot be transmitted until the individual is acutely ill. Therefore he probably didn't infect his family
