8 year old Nigerian boy comes 2nd in UK Child Genius competition

8 year old Tudor Mendel-Idowu and his sister 11 year old Hazelle Mendel-Idowu (pictured above) were the only Nigerians to take part in the Child Genius of the Year 2014 in the UK.

The competition consists of 20 highly gifted youngsters between 7-12 who face two grueling rounds: Logic and Reasoning and Memory Recall - where they have just one hour to commit 104 randomly shuffled playing cards to memory.

Hazel Mendel-Idowu was out of the competition in the second round but Tudor Mendel-Idowu scaled through to the final stage on Sunday August 10th and made it up to 2nd position.

11 year old Sharon from Bolton won the competition. Tudor Mendel-Idowu is the son of Pastor and Mrs Tolu Mendel-Idowu from Nigeria. Congrats to him...

    2. I think the kid wld most likely rebel. He doesnt seem to be really enjoying himself, the pressure frm his pops wld make his intelligent seem a borden to him #personal experience

  12. There are a lot of brainiacs in Nigeria! But Nigeria dulls your brain and there is much encouragement from the government! Why do you think our people foster and prosper when they go study abroad? This country is hell and no Nigerian deserves to go to hell after death! Cos they have already lived it.

  15. You wouldn't understand how good Tudor is until you see how extremely intelligent the other kids are.
Sharon is the current UK Chess champion , one of the other kids an 11 years old boy is already talking about going to the university, claiming he is bored at his current school cos he already understand everything, his dad said he's scared.
Eleonora, one of the semi finalists is so good she reads every available material at her disposal that she spotted out a mistake in the Websters dictionary.
The questions they were asked were actually put together by various university professors in various fields!
Honestly after seeing how good the other kids were, I never believed Tudor could have come second, that kid, the underdog against all odds beat the other kids,100 of them.
His dad though, quite stern and strict ! :) aha

  16. I want my kids to be balanced not those that study all the time but have a miserable life. The girl that won was seen reading a book on " how to be happy" and "how to make friends".
Imagine an 11 yr old not knowing how to make friends. Such kids end up committing suicide or turning to drugs because of pressure from their parents.

If your kid is naturally intelligent it will show, you just have to encourage them not pressurised.
