Boko Haram kills 8, bombs bridge in Yobe

8 people were killed and a major bridge destroyed after suspected members of the Boko Haram sect yesterday night July 28th launched an attack in Katarko town in Yobe State. Katarko is 22km South of Damaturu, the state capital and is said to be very near the dreaded Sambisa forest.

According to reports, the sect members arrived the village around 7.30pm in motorbikes and operated unhindered till 2.00am. The men had unsuccessful attacked a military base in the town before moving into a residential area. Continue...

"They stormed our village with some vehicles and many motorcycles, shooting and chanting Allahu Akbar (God is Great). The soldiers in Katarko had to flee after seeing the large number of the attackers. After attacking the village and killing about eight persons and injuring some others, we later heard a thunderous explosion at the location of the bridge; we all fled into the bush. But in the morning, we later found out that the bridge had been destroyed with bombs”, said Mr. Lawan, a resident of the village said.
The bridge attacked is the bridge linking Buni Yadi and Damaturu, the state capital.

  46. In this misdirected war, the numbers of the
dead and dying keep rising. Muslims have
died. Christians have died. Imams have
died. Pastors have died. Atheists have died.
African traditional religionists ave also died.
Children have been killed. The youth too.
Men and women have been killed. But in
the midst of them all, soldiers and
policemen and state security officers and
men and operatives have been brutally
killed. Many were Muslims. Many were
Christians. Some married. Others about to
wed. And others single. They died for a land
and people they believed should be kept
united and safe. They died to give all of us
the prospects of a better and more
    prosperous future. Whatever their religion,
    geo-political location, ethnic group, or
    education, they died anyway.
But we who are still alive owe them better
memories of lives invested into selfless
service; we owe their families the stillness
that shows we share in their pain; we owe
their Services the respect that comes with
    gallantry.
As a nation, as a people, we unite around a
common cause, stand with our leaders, and
    expose those who have committed
themselves to bloodshed and brigandage –
until we all win. It’s our common battle. Do
we dare take our focus off this?
