World Cup 2014: Super Eagles boycott training over bonus money

Super Eagles players reportedly missed a scheduled training session yesterday after a disagreement with officials of the National Football Federation over bonus money.
BBC Sports reports that the players believe they are each $15,000 (£8,800) short of what they were expecting for reaching the last 16 in Brazil.

The players refused to train in Campinas on Thursday and NFF officials later confirmed the session had been cancelled. Continue...

From BBC

BBC Sport has learned the problem lies in the interpretation of the bonus structure, with the players believing they will only receive $10,000 for their win 1-0 over Bosnia-Hercegovina and $5,000 for the 0-0 draw with Iran.
The players' understanding was they would receive a $30,000 payment for qualifying from the group.
However, it is believed the Nigerian Football Federation's offer to the players includes the agreed win and draw bonuses plus 30% of the prize money due from Fifa for reaching the knockout stage.
This is understood to rise to 40% of the prize money from Fifa if Nigeria were to win their round of 16 match, 50% for a quarter-final victory, 60% for a win in the semi-final stage and 70% for lifting the trophy.
While all parties work to find a resolution to the misunderstanding, coach Stephen Keshi has insisted it will not affect the team's performance.
And it has been confirmed to the BBC that the players will travel to Brasilia on Friday as scheduled and will train in the evening and over the weekend.

  14. They should be paid their bonuses, if they lose against France and didn't qualify for quarter final, the NFF will not pay them again, they are acting based on previous experiences

  21. I support the players. What stops NFA from crediting each player's account immediately they qualified. There is no use talking about patriotism here, the NFA officials will only embezzle or 'steal'( as affirmed by GEJ) the money.
Each player's account should be credited immediately they finish the match.. there is no reason for any meeting to discuss the bonus, since there is approved bonus plan, before the competition started. We all know, the plan is for us to qualify for the next round... NFA should have provided for this qualification...etc... Thieving Africans....

  22. Supported!!!! ....Yezzir! ...make dem floss a bit....them don qualify for the knockout stage.....so them need to git paid!...

  34. The money is sitting in some official's bank account . Crazy sports officials, always looking for where to steal from. What a shame . We need to know why they have so many Sports officials in Brazil , more officials than the whole team and staff put together , even more than the supporting team . When are we going to stop disgracing ourselves over money and corruption?

  35. Please they should pay them their money. I believe all these things about bonuses are written down. So they should follow due process and pay them to avoid any distractions against France.

  37. NFA should just be proscribed. This rubbish has been happening to the Eagles at every major tournament for as long as I can remember. Is NFA run by imbeciles?

  40. Don't pay them unless they win. Tie pay to performance.

  41. Typical. This is always their downfall. Nigerian sports men and women, especially the footballers are forever the only team moaning about money / payments. They're so predictable. Thought about these people a few hours ago. Had a nagging feeling they'd do this: get pigheaded or some corrupt official will short change them, or they'd simply engage in foolishness and greed and hold Nigeria to ransom. That's it. The infighting has begun. Lawddd help us should this lot win the World Cup; they'd each demand to be turbaned, crowned, given sainthood by the Vatican, given lifetime supply of young virgin girls, given diplomatic passports and made lifetime State Governors. Foolish people. Disgraceful lot. Pathetic.

  42. I do say it is stupid and they are doin it to themselves, but a worker is entitled to his wages. Strike is the only language Nigerian govt understands

    ReplyDelete
  43. This satanic distraction. Our players should focus on progressing in the WORLD CUP. This increase their value in their foreign clubs instead of clamouring for peanuts from NFF. NFF no wayo abeg pay the players.

  44. N tomorrow a dying ex-international will say he served Nigeria with all his life. One year in NYSC,receive 213600 naira and 90 minutes in super eagles, receive 1.62million Naira. Yet the both are serving disame country. Diaris God o.

  46. why are they just so wicked (freaking NFF)?
why must they make life difficult for the national team? $15,000 isn't so much money naaaaaaaaaaaa.
But if they can't pay up, I suggest they take Mikelis Obilis own share , and that dada man (Uche something)a.k.a Longines own share, and Mr Adaeze Joseph Igwe-Yobo's own share....by doing this, there would be enough to soothe The Odewingies, the Musas, the Emenikes, the "broken arm" Babatundes, etc so that they will ruthlessly exterminate the French.
Otherwise, let us all just drink peak milk.
    IS IT IN YOU?

  50. They super eagles have worked and are entitled to their payments. All the people saying dey shld pay and not ask for money, how wld u feel when u work and u don't get paid. Please leave patriotism. Football is their work, they've worked. Pay them. Besides the money will be embezzled by some1 who did absolutely nothing in the world cup. so y not give it those that worked for it.

  52. This is not a good news at all at this crucial stage of the competition where 100% concentration is needed. The NFF should realise that this is not the best of time to joke with the players allowances or bonuses.

    ReplyDelete
  53. All those people saying fuck super eagles you are nothing but all fools, have you ever heard of any European, South/North or Asian American team having issues with money in world cup? it is only Africa (Black man). You are all thieves just like NFF old men that's why you believe players should not be paid.. Babatunde just broke his hand for his country and you feel he doesn't deserve to be paid but rather some big belle old man in Abuja deserves the money more abi!! It is a fucking job they are doing for Nigeria and they deserve to be paid, that is how those mad general's in Nigeria refused to pay soldiers their allowances and Boko haram are killing soldiers like chickens everyday. May all the greedy Nigerians who have tried or eaten other peoples allowances and wages all choke to death in Jesus name AMEN and may all you people who feel that NFF should eat players money also choke to death.. greedy bastards...

  54. Bonus is additional money paid to them beyond their base earnings. They want the money now because they don't believe they can win against France.
