'Verse To The Girl Child' - Written by Banky W

Here's a a poem Banky W wrote and recited earlier today at an MTN event in Lagos. Read below...

Verse To The Girl Child
What frightens the extremists and really gives them the spooks?
There’s nothing scarier to them than a girl with a book
Not a soldier, or a bomb, or a gun, or a landmine
There’s nothing more dangerous than her enlightened mind

So they kidnap, and enslave, and try to stand in her way
And they rape, and oppress and try to make her afraid
Because they know, that for sure, she’ll grow up one day
And when that day comes, she’ll be strong enough to bring change

So respect to the girl child, you’ve got grown men scared of you

Salute to our future Chimamanda’s, and our Tiwa Savage’s too

To our future Oprah Winfrey’s and our Maya Angelou’s

Because we know you will grow, and your success is inevitable

They can try to fight it, and they can try to deny

They can kidnap at night, and they can try to terrorise

But may nothing and noone ever succeed in snuffing out your light

And that little light of yours, will one day shine bright

They say the truth will set you free, well this is the gospel truth

There’s nothing more powerful than a girl with a book

  46. He spoil thus his poem with the name Tiwa Savage, I mean it would ve scored a very high point without mentioning Tiwa, now it's not making sense. Tiwa is not a success when they are calling women achiever pls.

  47. Nice write up but I say no to d Tiwas', Maheedes', Afrocandys', Cossys' n d likes. Kudos Banky. #bringbackoureducatedgirls

  48. nicely written. but please, my daughter is not a future tiwa savage. Tiwa savage has lost her identity and is just like a desperate talentless wannabe. the sad part is she's extremely talented but just silly

  51. I love I love this!!! Aye to our future chimamanda,Maya angelou, and opray!!! But a tiwa savage? I beg your pardon mr B, dat was an ironical metaphor..Extremist believe that a girl child has nothing to offer because their is little thing in her brain, that she should be oppressd because if she is given freedom(she can wild out)..Tiwa savage's recent picture kinda make you wnt to understand why these extremists are totally asshole to humanity..To err is human, to forgive is divine...I forgve you banky for that oxymoronic reference!!#cheEzyjayne

  52. HE SHOULD HAVE LEFT TIWA SAVAGE OUT...all thisame, nice work!

  53. Nice and thoughtful of him. The girl child should be taught not to lose her childhood too soon to the flattery of wayward men and relatives. Education is important as long as she understands its worth. Thanks to Mr Bankole W.

  54. Well said Mr. Wellington.

  55. How can he put Tiwa in the same class as Maya, Oprah and Chimamanda. Who knows Her and what has she achieved. Hiss

    ReplyDelete
  60. I really was enjoying the whole poem till "tiwa savage" somehow managed to enter the picture then it got weird and so offkey all of a sudden.

    ReplyDelete
  61. NO TO TIWA SAVAGE BEING THERE!!!! SHE'S NOT ANYTHING TO LOOK UP TO. BAD ROLE MODEL. SHE'S LOST HERSELF TRYING TO BE A FREAK!! FRIGGING WITCH! WE HATE HATE U NOW. Better retrace ur steps. BEING A REBEL DONT SUIT U.

    ReplyDelete
  62. This is so nice...but tiwa savage?...reallly?
Pls you dnt want your girl child to emulate a desperate, dumb.rude fool like tiwa savage! #ewww!! Just hope she sees this and finds out how disgusting she is! She was much better before...banky,I will always love you!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Well said but what is with Tiwa Savage on the list. sentiment! And Banky, you like attention. Please concentrate on doing good music or better still join nollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Nice one Banky...more of this

    ReplyDelete
  65. well Nigerian you may not like all the words B.W use in this poet, using the reference Tiwa for instance, looking at Maya she was at one time almost going nude as well when she was a singer,Les not criticize him, you and i know that there are the bad and the ugly especially when writing those word is just to encourage every one not to give up in the race of learning and educating it is ironical metaphor..Extremist believe that a girl child has nothing to offer because their is little thing in her brain, after all she will end up in the kitchen.
That she should be oppressed because if she is given freedom(she can wild out)..understand why these extremists are totally asshole to humanity..Nigeria less encourage our self instead o criticizing or and murmuring at every world

    ReplyDelete
  66. Banky i love you. Very well said, but next time remove that Beyonce wana be Tiwa out off the list.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Why are we nigerians so blind to see and quick to condemn...outside Asa,Tiwa savage is one of the sweet sensations we have in the music industry#,You dance and twerk for your many lovers and man friends in a comfort of a bedroom, but you are so quick to condemn a girl that portrays you in her music# and other terrible things you do in clubs and parties...Tiwa has got a lovely voice, and she's a role model to ladies that would wanna av a sweet sensational voice...THANKS MR banky for the poem...We appreciate you sir...
