Update on Emab Plaza bombing, 21 confirmed dead, 17 injured

The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, has confirmed that 21 people died this afternoon when a bomb went off at the very busy Emab Plaza in Wuse 2, Abuja. He also confirmed that 17 people were seriously injured and have been taken to Maitama District Hospital,  Gwarimpa hospital, Wuse hospital, Garki hospital and National hospital.

Mr Mba said one suspect has been arrested and investigations have already started. The bomb is said to have gone off in a car as it passed through the gate of the mall around 4 this afternoon. The fire that followed the explosion is said to have engulfed most of the cars parked around the mall.

Security Forces have condoned off the scene of the blast, while the Police Bomb Disposal Squad has commenced post-blast analysis as part of the general investigative process, according to a statement.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by a suicide bomber though there are other conflicting reports from some eye-witnesses that a man on a bike threw the explosive and sped off. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, we all can kinda guess. See more photos after the cut..

As sweet as this Life is, ....Some thoroughly brainwashed and Disillusioned fellows wake up one morning and decide that they want to die that day.............and take as many innocent people as they can along with them......................Beliving to wake up in the Afterlife and have 70 virgins and a river of wine attached to them???? ...sad!

God help Nigeria........this can't go on forever

  41. Where is safe in Nigeria? The recent bombings in Abuja is too many to just wave off. How long shall we continue to live this way? I see all this as political. I am apolitical and do not like it when we reduce human lives to mere political debates.

When we this madness stop? Are our public places truly safe? I kept wondering if our airports are really safe. Do we have to wait until a bomb explodes there before we start acting. Almost all the airports have free entry and exit. Entering the airports are without checks except when boarding . Security agents should start scanning people from the gates and not wait until they are inside the building. We must all be security conscious. Life is precious. Bomb detectors should be put in such places to prevent future bombings. This carnage must stop in all public places. There is no place like home. We do not have any other nation than Nigeria. Let's build it together. May the soul of the departed rest in peace.

  42. This is so sad...let the terrorists continue their nefarious acts, God will reward every one according to his works. Meanwhile security should be beefed up in Nigeria. May God help us.

  50. Some think they can stop GEJby all this. They hv gone too far, it will be a colossal loss if he step down his ambition for 2015 for these murderers. By so doing, evil has triumph over good. All I plead with Nigerians is to be conscious. Watch your neighbors back.

  51. The government is but a few people. Civil society is owned and run by the masses. Can we stop waiting on 1-2 people to become our Jesus? In the United States neighborhoods are safe because of the action taken by residents. Yes, having the government provide support services is great but the power of the people trumps any government presence. The difference between high crime neighborhoods and safe neighborhoods is the sense of ownership and responsibility exhibited by the residents. Someone that is not Boko Haram heard something or saw something and kept mum. These types of plans seldom occur without leaking out. We should empower twitter and other social media as avenues for anonymous social policing. That is what you do when you are worried that the police force has been infiltrated and you cannot report suspicious behavior. You tell the public.

  61. Pls there is something that is not clear to me
if our president really believes that all these are happening because of him cant he resigned honourably .does it means that innocent people will continue to die like this because of only one man.
if Jonathan children are among the people killed in all blast.will he continue to stay in power
Jonathan the vampire all these innocent blood will cry against you .they will cry against your children children and those that are supporting yours continuous staying in power
if you go now for the sake of peace you will ever be remember as hero and ambassador of peace and unity of Nigeria.
To the coward Hausa people the whole word knows you behind all this blast..all you are now suspect very soon now anywhere people see you they will pursue you.you will run in the day you will run in the night.

  68. If all these killings is just coz of political tussle between apc and pdp then i weep for my country coz this is becoming unbearable. so many people have lost their lives. Those in power who have good agenda for this country should sit down and dialogue amicably and flush out the bad eggs e.g Ghana. I am so sick and tired of hearing bad news. May God help us. RIP to the dead. #PICCANTO#

RIP TO THOSE WHOSE LIFE ENDED IN THAT UNFAITHFUL BLAST. REST WELL.
