Nigerian girl emerges best graduating student at American university

20 year old Delta state born Merrilyn Akpapuna (pictured above) on May 10th 2014 emerged overall Best Graduating Student of Dillard University, New Orleans, USA.

Merrilyn, the daughter of a dental surgeon, graduated with a first class honors in Psychology. She also won two other awards for highest academic achievements for the College of Arts and Sciences and College of General Studies.

Her feat made her share the podium with US First Lady, Michelle Obama, who attended the school's convocation. Merrilyn is pictured above with the President of Dillard University, Dr Walter Kimbrough. Congrats to her. What an inspiration. Continue...

Three other Nigerians also shined at the convocation ceremony. Victor Ogburie, Stephen Igwe, and Emole Anyadimgba all graduated with first class honors in their various discipline.
Victor Ogburie (left), 24, graduated with first class in Computer Science. Emole Anyadimgba (middle), 27, from Abia state graduated with a first class in Computer Science. Stephen Igwe (right)  26, graduated with a first class in Biology major. Well done, guys!

Anyways, many Nigerians in America study too hard to make excellent grades, thats why they keep graduating best, they too memorize...an average American does not cram/memorize and most of them go ahead to invent/create. It's time we stopped being 'best' in class, theres too much emphasis on graduating best/first. It's time we start thiunking toi create/invent!

  72. Linda, Dillard is no freaking ivy league as we know it. Rather, it's a black ivy league school. Black ivy league schools are historical black colleges that used to attract the best among the blacks back in the days. The real, or if you may, the actual ivy league schools are just 8 in number, and Dillard can never be amongst those 8.

Meanwhile, a big congrats to the guys. They have done very well for themselves, ivy league or not.

It does not take away from the kids achievement to graduate from great universities.

Secondly, I thought the past tense of 'shine' was 'shone,' not 'shined.' I could be wrong though. Please enlighten me if I am wrong.

  92. Nice one guys.but somthing like this raises concern about how well recorgnised nigerian universities are.I checked up this Dillard University online only to find out quite a number of nigerian universities are better ranked.you can check 4icu.org for that.if people, especially employers disciminate some of our nigerian universities based on university ranking, then there is a huge problem when they hype students with foreign certificates from schools with much lesser rank.but the truth is,a good grade is a good grade.Congrats to them ones again
