ReplyDeleteIt's stil b censored cuz of the "Semi Nudity" wch Naijas ain't used to and knowing our cinemas, even a 'kid' wil eventually stil watch and b giving u inquisitive looks like say na u carry am come watch..
DeleteMovied are rated with age .
Delete@ Maple leaf..really? Thanks for the info professor
DeleteMy thought exactly @ Maple leaf. The Nigeria censors board has a long way to go! Obviously, they have bunch of illiterates that don't know what movie rating is all about. I mean what is a love movie without some nudity? Chiwetel and thandie are Hollywood materials and they delivered their role perfectly including the love scene. I just pray this is not a tribal issue since the novel depicts what happened during the Nigerian civil war and the mention of Biafra. I just pray this is not the case...I really want to see that movie.

DeleteIt is almost certainly about Biafra. Nobody wants the bloody sad past resurrected in a time when the country is divided, torn apart and in freefall.
DeleteI don't think it's d nudity that is delaying d release.I think it's a tribal issue.the movie depicts d sufferings of the south-east folks during d biafran war.so....

ReplyDelete**SMH** lets stop decieving ourselves.
Femi marry me already..... u just spoke my mind
Delete@ Femi, that's because Nigeria will never appreciate what they have until its gone. Other notable countries like Canada,US, UK, Australia and even countries like portugal and the middle east have all approved and given it an international release date, but Nigeria censors board is proving to be a hard nut to crack for reasons i can't comprehend. For christ sake, this is a movie based on an award winning novel. Its an international film that's why its the first Nigerian movie to be recognised by these countries. @ Olubukola, please marry him now because I want to eat rice.

I understand y d release is being delayed. This film can end up sprouting more hate from the igbos towards the hausas due to the incidents of the past. I think that is very bad esp in this kind of state we are in Nigeria now. I really don't the usefulness of the book/film when it's just to remind us of the scars of the past. Chimamanda's books are always negative Purple Hibiscus- Violence and Murder, Half Of A Yellow Sun- War and Strife, Americanah- Racism and The Thing Around Your Neck- A complete Compilation of the above. And to be sincere the book really increased my hate for the hausas when am supposed to be growing out of that. We don't need that kind of negative energy, not now...not ever! #Love
ReplyDelete@Lovina, much as I see reason wit you but history needs telling. We can not go further as a nation if the various perspectives are not brought to the fore.
DeleteYou're right sister but it's just the world we live in. Don't hate.
DeleteLovina you're right but it's just the world we live in, its just like the racist movie we watch you know of our black past like the recent movie 12years a slave, i almost hated whites but its not worth it. We just learn how it was 500-1000 years ago. It is well.
DeleteLiberty, did you state 500-1000 years ago? You should spend more time studying and less making dumb comments.
DeleteI'm so bored.
ReplyDeleteBeen checking cinemas site 4 ds movie like everyday like I knew it was gonna get postponed...dey r really keeping us in high anticipation
ReplyDeleteNigerian government is so afraid to let Nigerians think for themselves they will do about anything to make sure we don't know the truth about the Biafran war no matter how little. Ever wonder why there hasn't being any movie about the Biafran war?
ReplyDeleteJUST THINKING. . .
ReplyDeleteWHAT DO WE CALL THIS MOVIE NOW
NOLLYWOOD OR HOLLYWOOD?
Them delaying the movie is just silly. Movies with more nudity are being shown at d cinemas. Who are they kidding. That's what film rating are for. I just feel the movie was delayed cus some oga at the top was not bribed.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why I can't help but think that the reluctance of the censor board to grant approval for this movie viewing is a deliberate malicious intent. Phps they're scared at the resentment this movie will bring to some quarters(especially the Igbo) on its account of civil war or the antecedent it will give Nigerians to justify or judge some present actions and inactions of govt. Especially at this sensitive period of Bokoharam onslaught and when election is close by. They might be afraid of its capability to incite some quarters to action and perhaps iys negative consequentialities. If you have read the book, you will understand my point of view.
ReplyDeleteAny whichway, this is not enough reason to stop the show cos Nigerians will still watch it Either in the cinemas or the downloaded cinema version(in other countries) online. I just wouldn't want the producer to loose out the Nigerian marlet especially now that our Cinema culture is improving and getting profitable.
They've spent a lot on that movie, they deserve their reward.
@snr_pappy, @pappyz_missile
Censors Board didnt approve some scenes cos of Boko Haram. They said the part where someone said 'these Hausa soldiers are coming to kill us' is inciting. They claim it might infuriates Boko Haram the more. How pathetic. Did Hausa soldiers kill the Igbo or not? Why must Boko Haram keep holding us to ransom. Am suspecting this is happening bvos the DG of Censors' board is an Hausa woman.
ReplyDeleteDid the Igbos ignite the war or not? What were they expecting, awards and kisses? When you create a storm, do not complain about the rain! Igbos should shut up, there was a war and they lost. The world has moved on. No work of fiction or hatred of Northerners (who showed kindness to the Igbos that the Igbos will not have shown had they won) will change that.
DeleteHmmm... we saw that coming See The 14-Year-Old Boy With The Monster 7 Foot Fish He Caught!

BIYI BANDELE
UK, Nigeria, 2013, 106 minutes, digital, Color, official site
Starring Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (Twelve Years a Slave), Hollywood starlet Thandie Newton (Mission Impossible II) and based on the acclaimed novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun chronicles an extended family's perseverance during Nigeria's brutal civil war from 1967 to 1970, Half of a Yellow Sun is the triumphant directorial debut of Nigerian playwright Biyi Bandele. As Nigeria celebrates its early 1960s freedom from British rule, well-to-do sisters Olanna (Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) go their own ways, Olanna to set up house with radical academic Odenigbo (Ejiofor) and Kainene, eventually, to a relationship with gentle British teacher Richard (Joseph Mawle). As tensions spread throughout the country, conflicts break out in the families as well, forcing frantic relocations and stretching the bonds of sisterhood to the limit. Working from his own astute adaptation of the narratively complex book, Bandele has constructed an urgent epic that deservedly won the People's Choice award at the recent Toronto International Film Festival. —Eddie Cockrell

Half of a Yellow Sun, adapted from the novel by acclaimed author Chimamanda Adichie, cannot decide whether it should tell the story of the Biafran War that divided Nigeria in the late 1960s or the soapy drama of two sisters and the petty fights that force them apart. So it does both—badly. The first 40 minutes chronicle the lives of 30-ish siblings Olanna and Kainene (played by 40-something actresses Thandie Newton and Anika Noni Rose) and their respective partners, the revolutionary Odenigbo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and the calm British academic Richard (Joseph Mawle) as they squabble and cheat on each other in the Nigerian university town of Nsukka. The next 40 minutes cover the war, during which the Christian Igbos created the new nation of Biafra and the leading characters issue a détente for the good of the country. But amid the explosions and heavy political discourse, the actors can’t work with a plodding script and inconsistent tone. If you’re curious about the Biafran War, read Adiche’s book and skip the film.
ReplyDelete@edDREAMS..... i personally think your comment is the worst av ever seen on a social platform.. now, who isnt Nigerian????
ReplyDeleteThe Nigerian censorship board have banned half a yellow sun due to security concerns. I am a journalist and they told me in an interview that it will cause tension between ethnic groups in Nigeria because of Biafra war references.
ReplyDeleteIgbos should be wise
ReplyDeleteThis country is denying them their right

@ anonymous 12.44 th movie isnt abt d war. It is story of love in time of war. If u want d war account, see d book but if u want something entertaining n account if two sisters who found love n hatred, see d movie. I dare say this is the best I have seen from Nigeria
ReplyDeleteDiz movie should betr nt b anoda waste of resources oo! Nollywood oshi!

ReplyDeleteDo u knw I actually came into town cuz of this movie. .. dey jst spoilt my day. I hope dey show it soon
ReplyDeleteoh can't wait to see the movie, read the novel.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to watch the movie. Hope its gonna be interesting than the novel. Lol
ReplyDeleteI watched a private screening of this movie in Dallas, TX recently and was blown away. A very well done movie and a must for all Nigerians. At the end of the movie, the African Americans in the room were eager to know about Biafra. Fortunately, there was a Nigerian guy in attendance that related his family's experience of hiding in bunkers, hunger, dead bodies and bombs going off during the war. Anyway, for those of you that can watch it, you will not regret your decision.
ReplyDeleteIts because the movie has been over hyped in Nigeria that those stupid censors board people are holding it.They know the owners would make more money from the movie and for that they want their own share.#Ndioshi
ReplyDeleteRelease our movie for us abeg!
Naija hypocrites, una too dey do holy holy...una dey pretend say una never see sex scene before. I bet una freaky pass anything behind close door. Abeg make una grow up and release the movie, it's not for children. Some of una go rather adults watch Sesame Street for cinema SMDH
ReplyDeletecant wait to watjch it mhen
ReplyDeletenice film cant wait for it to come out
ReplyDeleteDey should release the film o I really want to watch the film can't wait any longer
ReplyDeleteAm sorry to disappoint the NFVCB if they think the film will ignite tribal sentiments then they are way behind times. Whether we like it or not and sadly too Naija is deeply divided along tribal n religious lines and one film wnt make the difference. This is just our terrible culture of killing our own. Why did they wait until the time of release to bring up their stupid reasons whether nudity or tribal sentiments. Anyway they will not succeed in raining on Chimamanda's parade. Naija will be the loser cos wt this kind of treatment we will continue to ave brain drain.
ReplyDeleteThey're censoring it so as not to incite the public. The movie is a war story. No talking about past wars when the country's in the midst of another.
ReplyDeleteMethinks too that some people need their palms to be greased. No be Naija we dey? Pls Biyi B if Naija refuses to air the film go to other countries who will gladly show it. Yeye people.
ReplyDeleteWe can't continue to hid the fact of the past if we want to move ahead in unity. The novel came then the movie. The Board should just rated and censor it. We cannot be living in fear of one tribe against the others. We should talk freely about the civil war so that we can know what happened. Where fact are misrepresented from one section the other can present their own version.
ReplyDeleteWho is trying to sabotage this movie
ReplyDeleteWell on the good side, The delay is keeping nigerians in suspence. Most people will be eager to watch the movie for the fact the the NVFCB banned it. It makes me more curious to wanna watch the movie. @ the person that says chimamanda writes negative. Also know she is a very brilliant writter and her writtings are just down to earth and truthful. Eventually we r all gonna get to see the movie somehow...
ReplyDeleteMy own is history has to be told. Cant we take a que from South Africa and and hw Nelson Mandela's stories ave been made into different movies gosh ave lost count sef and that was apartheid oooh n d white people r still in South Africa with d blacks.
