Caleb University shut down following students' protest

Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, has been shut down following students' protest yesterday which saw school properties, including four cars destroyed. The protest allegedly began after an official of the school tried to stop a Muslim student from praying in the school, which is a Christian school.

The School's VC Prof. Ayo Olukoju announced today that the school will be shut down temporarily but will re-open on June 2nd. Speaking to Punch about the decision, Prof Olukoju said;
“We have rules and regulations in the school and all the students agreed to abide by them. These rules are in the student handout. Before now, we have been applying appropriate sanctions against students who default in any of these rules. We wanted to enforce one of such sanctions on Wednesday before this crisis escalated. Please, the crisis has nothing to do with religion. It has nothing to do with being a Christian or a Muslim. People, especially female students even went to their worship centres on campus on Wednesday to pray after the incident. Again, I tell you this action was carried out by the male students alone.”

    This is not d first time caleb students are protesting, I was once a student dere, the poineer set, the first was when dey enforced an all suit everyday law. The funny tin is dat they now gave. D colours of suit we shuld wear everyday. Until we protested, dey adjusted some oda rules.... The fact still remains dat caleb is fucked up, dnt blame d students, if u were dere u will undastnd why dey did so.... Especially Mrs Okok, very rude nd mean... Besides calebs SDC is very mean, dey will give u two weeks suspension a week before exam for an offence u committed last semester jst to make sure u hv a carry over nd den u will spend over 250k on summer lesson. Isn't dat wickedness

  62. THE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENCE OF MAY 14The protest by male students on campus Wednesday 14, May 2014 HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH RELIGION. A certain man, a non student was apprehended by our security personnel for trying to bring prohibited items into the school. After much interrogation, he mentioned the names of his culprits involved. An official went to the male hostel to get the students mentioned one of whom was praying in the hostel. The students involved along with other students faced with Student disciplinary committee cases took advantage of the interruption of prayers of one of the culprits to start the protest.University properties worth millions were destroyed and this act was carried out by the male students. The students have been sent home on recess to resume back 2nd of June 2014. The University will continue to uphold her integrity, Values and principles.SIGNED: PUBLIC RELATIONS EXECUTIVE.  Olushola Emiola.
