Sack letter over freedom of association @Nnamdi Azikiwe University

House Officers at the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, Anambra State are being threatened of getting sacked by 4pm today over joining the Association of Resident Doctors in the state. Management of NAUTH yesterday April 1 posted a notice telling doctors they had only 24hours to rescind their decision to join the association or risk the withdrawal of their internship programme.

The House Officers say their decision to join was because of unaccountable deductions in salary and good working condition ...believing ARD would protect their interests. Aren't people free to join any association they want?...

    1. The mgt has backed down on that threat. As at 4pm today, nothing was done to them. The National Association of Resident Doctors president and other well meaning elders in the profession prevailed on the mgt to see the foolishness of their action and they relented.
Now they have to pay them back all the illegal deductions from their salaries or face the wrath of ARD.
      Aluta continua...

    2. I admire the courage of these HOs.
Despite all the threats by d mgt (verbal, written & otherwise) they all stood their grounds even @ the risk of losing their jobs.
Now, mgt has shot itself in the leg because questions will be asked as to why the house officers, who before now, never wanted anything to do with the ARD are now clamouring to join the association.
How many house officers did you employ?
How many does the Fed Ministry of Health give you money to pay?
Why do you still need to cut their salaries each month to satisfy your insatiable greed?
      These are the questions people.
The sooner we get EFCC into this matter, the better. Same goes for all you who embezzle govt money meant for your subordinates. Not only is God watching, nemesis is here!

    2. Dear Anon 3:26 pm, they are not just interns. They are human beings who have rights like you & me.
Ponder this. If your NYSC director (assuming you were a Corps member) decides to give you only 60% of your allowances every month, without explaining what happened to the rest, will you sit down and watch helplessly because you are only a corper?
What u do is mobilise your colleagues and agitate, peacefully. However, u need an umbrella to do that. That's where ARD comes in.

ARD should step up and fight for d house officers after all dey deduct their dues from the house officers salary even without concent.when I was a officer it was rilli annoying to receive my salary and find out money has been drducted by an association u have little or no input in and in periods of ARD strick house officers are forced to go to work..imagine.yet the residents relax at home.....look there is more to this than the eyes see.

    1. For about 10 yrs now, house officers in NAUTH do not belong to the ARD as against what obtains in other centres in the country. By definition, any doctor below the rank of a consultant or its equivalent is essentially a member of the ARD.
All through these years, they never paid any dues nor did they participate in any ARD activity. How could you make that thoughtless assertion?
The truth is that HOs in NAUTH have never felt the need to be part of the ARD until recently when the management conspired to be making outrageous deductions from their salaries from source, amounting to more than 1/3 of their monthly Salary in one fell swoop so that they could finance an award Ceremony for a departed Professor.
This prompted them to seek refuge in ARD where they knew their interest would be protected.
      Get your facts correct, DOCTOR!

  19. As much as I am sympathetic to the plight of the HOs who are mostly my friends and classmates, i'll advice they tread with caution because they are not allowed to be part of any association or take part in any industrial action as I'm sure is clearly stated in their employment letters. House job, internship is a one-year UNINTERRUPTED period of training in which the trainees are only entitled one month leave. No involvement in associations, no strikes. As much as they are aggrieved, they shouldn't go outside the tenets of their employment. Knowing NAUTH management and the helmsman which is the CMD, these kids may as well be flung out if they don't do as directed. I also think the ARD AND NMA in that hospital should step in and speak to the management on their behalf because anything they do contrary to the rules will be illegal and may cost them. The CMD should calm down too, na so so trouble full this him tenure!

  20. House officers are still under training and just a year contract, not a permanent staff,Resident doctors also are on training and on contract basis but for a longer period than the HOs and they have right to an association but not HOs..the HOs should better face their training, learn the proffession first and serve their fatherland rather than thinking of association bullshit...mtchew...

  22. NAUTH administrators r really funny oh.Sacking house officers cos of joining ARD.ARD is a union of house officers,Medical officers n residents.infact d only center dat d HOs don't belong to ARD is Nauth. Linda I heard dat previously Hos in Nauth r given an undertaken to sign dat dey wud not join ARD before their letters r given to dem.if u refuse to sign ur letter is revoked.I feel dey have hidden agenda n shud be probed and investigated

  23. Are they not becoming autocratic for todays learning enviroment?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Linda its so kind of you to put up this story. This is one of the reasons why the healthcare in Nigeria isnt working. Tertiary hospitals are given the go ahead to employ house officers eg 200 in number each of whom FG gives the CMD 185k to pay them per month! They will employ like 100 house officers and receive allocation for 200! Then the 100 employed they ll now still cut their salary to like 140-150k a month and force them to swear an affidavit saying no matter what happens they ll never protest or go on strike! They ll just work as slaves and receive whatever they are given!
This is the wickedness older doctors show the upcoming ones, this is why when a lot of you go to the hospitals you meet frustrated staff with a lackadaisical attitude leading to misdiagnosis and impatience with patients!
Please use this medium to call all these wicked old doctors to order, their cup is overflowing.
Make EFCC hunt them down like Orcs hunt dwarves.
Stealing peoples salary and expecting them to stay mute.

  25. Actually house officers are not allowed to go on strike. In Luth, during your internship interview , they ask if you would go on strike. We all say no. House job is one year of slavery. Ard fights for you but you are not allowed to join in their strike.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Actually Interns r nt allowed 2 join ARD and evn if dey do r nt allowed 2 go on strikes when ARD does. And dey sign contracts b4 dey start to dat effect. So, legally, d hospital management r in their rights. D interns shld b careful of wat dey do cos if dey lose dose jobs, dey shld nt think dat ARD wld stand up 4 dem.

  27. Did anyone notice the grammatical errors on the letter signed by the CMD....i laugh at this country.

  28. Once u are a member of ARD whether resident or house officer if ARD is on strike you should also be on strike.
Some1 mentioned LUTH, well thats why a house officer lost his father in LUTH last year or so because he didn't have cash to pay LUTH and yet the same LUTH was owing him some months salary!!
I dont know why these CMDs like to constitute unscrupulous elements in society.
Why house officer salary to dey hungry them.
Like some1 said if EFCC probes them most if not all of them will end up in jail.

  29. Dear bloggers, its not all the time that the 'perceived' underdog who cries out is right. Here are some facts so you can assess the situation. 1. House officers are not fully registered doctors - they are interns, in a supervised position for one year, sort of like industrial attachees, who have to undertake house job mandatorily before being fully registered to practice medicine by the medical and dental council. 2. On the other hand, resident doctors are postgraduate doctors undergoing specialist training, for a defined period of time. Their status, issues, conditions of employment, etc, are not similar. 3. House job MUST be for a complete 1 year (12 month) period. 4. After house job, the HO has to be signed off by the hospital and supervising consultants, including their competence, ethical conduct, academic capacity, etc. 5. If one set of HOs, don't complete house job, another set of new graduates from medical schools CANNOT be employed! 6. So, if they go on strike, what are the ramifications? Its also like students going on strike. 7. The ARD can still act to protect the HOs by exercising their own strengths. 8. However, the ARD also wants the HOs to be members as this increases the dues accruing to ARD.

  31. Anonymous 8.35pm,why is NAUTH case different or are u saying NAUTH is better dan other institutions.Every doctor knows u don't go on strike during housejob but dat doesn't mean u r not to be protected by ARD. Nauth is d only institution where d house officers r not ARD n dey belong to NMA dat doesn't protect dem cos the NMA chairman Nnewi Zone from wat I hear is also d DCMAC of Nauth Nnewi.so how does he protect d HOS wen it's in his best interest to agree wit d management.lets call a spade a spade.dont come here n talk crap cos we all know it's wrong. The Hos n resident doctors of Nauth need to stand up and fight the administrators.Nonsense

    ReplyDelete
  32. All these people saying that House Officers shouldnt go on strike, quick question, "how should the house officers react when their ogas @ the top slash their salary?" Does management have the right to slash interns salary @ will?
Some replies here just go to show that Nigerian youth have been so oppressed to the extent that they dont even believe they have rights. Thats why the position of youth leader is given to grand fathers, thats why the nation is having a confab and the FG doesnt deem it fit to involve up to 50% as youth despite the that we are the future of this nation, yet them they pay people 4Million to sleep!
Linda abeg post my comment, I dey vex s all this kind things!

  33. I think d federal government needs to investigate all d administrative heads of NAUTH.something is definitely wrong dere.why wud u make crazy deductions on pple's salary? The Hos n resident doctors pay more tax dan the Consultants who earn about 2 -3 X their salary n not just dat the residents r used to launder money for the administrators. We were paid our arrears in December n by Feb,d same pple that made d calculations came bak to claim we were overpaid by 80k n dat d money has to be deducted over 6mos.where is d 80k going? Of cos we all know it's entering the pocket of the CMD n his cohorts.residents were just used to launder money.EFCC n NLC needs to get involved n properly investigate NAUTH. Linda u can confirm my facts. I m saying the truth

    1. As the poster above said, the administrative heads should all be investigated... From the ridiculous amount of money quoted for substandard tarring of the hospital roads, to illegal deductions from house officers salaries (amounting to 1/3rd of their salaries) to overpaying résident doctors and later deducting it as a means of laundering money. I believe this is just a tip of the iceberg. At least the ones we know about.

I didn't see or hear ARD in those places making sure the HOs they co-opted into their association didn't serve that punishment, afterall, they all fought for a good course, didn't they?! Moral of the story?! Justice must be fought for and got for those illegal deductions BUT not in a way that the already maniacal management will see an axe to wield over the heads of my victimised friends and classmates. They don't have to be due-paying members of any association before their seniors who over enjoyed what they're now being blatantly denied, speak unequivocally on their behalf! They should tread carefully before these *bridge-burning* seniors(ARD and other not too trustworthy Co) lead them out and hang them to dry! Igwegbe nye umuazi imuru amu oke lutelu fa biko! Remember your own children are out there! KaChinekeMezieOkwu!
