Nigerian artistes dominate MAMA 2014 nominations; Davido leads the pack

Africa’s number one music authority, MTV Base has announced the nominees for this year’s MTV Africa Music Awards.  The announcement was made tonight, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 at an impressive nominations party at The Sands in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This year’s nominations prove that Nigerian music has fast taken over Africa. Out of fifteen different categories, Nigeria has been nominated in eleven categories and includes some of the biggest names in the Nigerian entertainment industry including Omotola Jalade, Chimamanda Adichie, 2Face, PSquare, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Olamide, Flavour among many others. Continue...

The different categories, which include Best Male, Best Female, Song of the Year and Artist of the Year has also broadened the scope of the MAMA awards franchise as achievements in non-music fields will also be recognized. They include “Personality of the Year” and “Transform Today by Absolut”, an award designed to recognize and support young, emerging and original African creative talents who use their imagination to fuel social transformation and bring positive attention to the continent.

Davido has the most nominations this year with four nods for Song of the Year, Best male, Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration.  Following closely behind with 3 nominations is dynamic duo, P Square with Best Group, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year while Wizkid receives two nods for Best Male and Best Collaboration.

Other Nigerian nominees include 2Face, Burna Boy, Chidinma, Don Jazzy, Dr Sid, Flavour, Ice Prince, KCEE, May D, Olamide, Phyno and Tiwa Savage.

Commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa, “We congratulate all the nominees for the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards. This year, the MAMA offers a stunning platform for African artists, it also celebrates the young personalities, leaders and creatives who are making a positive impact on the continent.”

Can't wait to know who emerges winner cos I'm not interested in that one. Can't even guess out of these 3

  74. to be frank. i don't buy into this list.

    * Nigeria has talents. why is South Africa dominating the list.
    * It should have been equal number of nominations. e.g 3 south africa, 3nigerian, 3 angola etc
    * How many South African Artist do we know here in Nigeria or even play their music.
    * Besides' south african music always follow same pattern/lyric so where is the creativity here that bring about the nomination.
    * Where are the other african country artists
    etc

  75. I stopped liking chimamanda after that "Mrs" fiasco. I think she overdoes it with the whole feminist thing and needs to grow up. I'm an Igbo woman and I still think her books contain wayyyy too much vernacular considering that she has an international audience and after purple hibiscus and half of a yellow sun,I lost interest. .
I think Lupita should be honored in her own home. I hope she doesnt go all Hollywood on us and not attend, that will be messed up but I doubt it though, she will be so honored to be recognized by her people and that will be us going her our stamp of approval.you'd be surprised that she has some of these nominees on her iPod playlist and would love to be in their midst.
Omotola...lol I like her but the other nominees are not her mate and for some reason I still see her as a local champion..a champion still.

  78. its great to see Nigerian artists dominate alongside south Africans. but I've noticed one thing, in Nigeria we don't play music from other African countries. but our music is heavily played all over Africa. is it because music from other African countries is not as good as ours or we just don't bother to play foreign African songs? just thought about it now. and concerning the male artist of the year... on merit it should go to davido but since ppl in Africa are voting , wizkid might just nick it.
