Last week
Tuesday, was a moment of tears, clap, back slapping and photography as select
group of people made up of mainly movie industry stakeholders, film critics and
the media gathered for the screening of the 10 Million Dollar movie ‘HALF OF A
YELLOW SUN.’
There was
about ten minutes of heart-touching moment of tears, as Yewande Sadiku, the
executive producer who raised over 10 million Dollars for the movie recollected
how painfully excruciating it was for her to raise that kind of money
especially more so when she has raised over a billion Dollar for other
non-movie business ventures. ‘I never believed it could take me about 6 years
to raise that kind of money, I am an investment banker by profession, part of
my specialty is raising money for people, I have headed a team that raised 1
billion dollars for a corporate organization, I could not believe that raising
money for a project that I want to do personally would take this long. Somehow
people do not believe it could be done and a lot of people do not believe in the
movie industry, there were many times I broke down with tears in my car
especially when someone had promised to make a commitment and all of a sudden
you can’t reach the person anymore or the person stops picking your calls or
replying SMS’.
Continuing,
Yewande said ‘Somehow my husband and I sold everything we had and we got one or
two people to also put down part of the money and borrowed the remaining money
from banks’.
The tears
got a few people on Yewande’s side but what finally sealed the conviction was
the movie after it was screened. It is a movie that would make any Nigerian in
any part of the world proud. Yewande was greatly applauded by the select few,
among whom were, Kunle Afolayan, movie critics like Toni Kan, Steve Ayorinde,
Samuel Olatunji, Niran Adedokun and respected script writer Tunde Babalola
(writer of ‘The Meeting’, ‘The Assignment’ and ‘Last Flight to Abuja’).
For Toni
Kan, ‘HALF OF A YELLOW SUN’ should be a must watch for every Nigerian. “You
must go and watch it (‘HALF OF A YELLOW SUN’) because it is a valuable piece of
Nigeria’s cinema history. It will teach you and touch you in many ways and
with2015 approaching and rabble-rousers banging on the drums of war, this love
story set in the time of war will give you perspective. War is evil but love
conquers all. When I read the novel, I was upset that it had been marketed,
mostly, as a book about the Biafran war, it was not. It was a love story set in
a time of war. At the core of ‘HALF OF A YELLOW SUN’ is love, lust, loss and
the healing power of forgiveness.”
The movie
which would be screened in Nigeria, Australia, US, UK, Middle East and Portugal
stars Oscar nominee, Chiwetel Ejiofor,
British actress, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Nollywood acts, Genevieve
Nnaji, Zack Orji, Wale Ojo, OC Ukeje, and veteran singer Onyeka Onwenu. The
movie is directed by Nigerian playwright, Biyi Bandele.
The premiere
in Nigeria is on April 12, 2014 while it will be released across cinemas in Nigeria
from April 25, 2014.
Just Incase you didn’t know, Arinze Ejiofor, a doctor and a Nigerian
highlife musician is Chiwetel’s father. In 1988 he passed on after a motor
accident that involved him and Chiwetel who was only 11years old and has scars
on his forehead to show for it. One of the titles of late Arinze’s album is Nna
Anyi Bi Na Enu Igwe

Shut up u moron! Must u comment twice?for ur information, linda isn't sharing money this year.OLE
DeleteInteresting story, by Yewande. But the question is how was the movie received overseas, considering two key factors: the success of the book where the story was drawn from, and (2)the runaway success of Chiwetel Ejiofor in 2013, with 12 years a slave. Am not sure the movie was a commercial and critical success. How ever nice try from Yewande, i hope the lessons learnt from this movie, will be applied in delivering better movies in future. Cos we can

Weldone cyprian ekwensi of our tym.his grAnma is still alive sef(see ur mouth like rotten mango) OLOSHI
DeleteCOOL...........!
ReplyDeleteYaaaay! My husband is coming home:):):)
ReplyDeleteI met Chiwetel years in the west end just around the time his movie serenity came out.He is British born and raised although I guess you can say he is Igbo because of his parents. It's almost like saying that Obama is Kenyan because of his father but we know better. I cannot wait to see the movie because I am passionate about Biafra and one day believe my people will be free of the 'British made' Zoo called Nigeria. I flushed my Nigerian passport down the toilet years because that little green book is an identity card that was 'forced' on me and the rest of my people.Chiwetel will be welcome, his uncle ,Igwe Ejiofor,is still king of their village in Enugu.
ReplyDeleteCynic*Igbo*Guy
So why should we be excited? Hes British.
ReplyDeletei care to come for d miracle job baquette in living faith but where is winers located in festal?

ReplyDeletei care to come for d miracle job baquette in living faith but where is winers located in festac?
ReplyDeleteCan't wait....
ReplyDeleteLinda thanks for not posting my comment..
ReplyDeleteGod knows that I meant no disrespect but just said it as it is. .
* My R1.50c comment *
Goosebumps all over my body. The trailer says it all. As for Genny, she's right on point(divalicious). I didn't know Chiwetel said he's not Nigerian(having mixed feelings about him now). But all the same, this movie is definitely a Blockbuster.
DeleteAs for these children born abroad,u have to ne careful the type of orientation u give them. My second son never agrees to the fact he's a Nigerian. But for us,it is by force that he accepts it. Every time we want to ce to Naija,he-s never happy nut after the last Xmas visit,we had to force to come back to this miserable country. As far as i'm concerned,Nigeria is the best place for one to come from. Your country is whete ur father comes from. Poppy
mmmmm, nawaooo see as linda dey talk like say him wan come dash us money 4 naija.
ReplyDeleteA must see movie...I can't wait
ReplyDeleteLol..I hear Funmi Iyanda is crushing on him..lol..*cant stop laffing* c dt old cow with her mask face ..mtcheww..ok,Mr. Chinwetel, welcm bck home, its a pity u dint win any oscars
ReplyDeleteLinda mk I hear word o... @ d end of d day now d movie ll be one crappy movie
ReplyDeleteSaid he's not a Nigeria, white babe spray painted on him. Always feeling superior and smug......
ReplyDeleteReally don't care anymore, and can't see myself spending my 'Nigerian' money to go and see him.
I wish d Yewande woman d best. Guess I'll reconsider and see it after all (in spite of Chiwetel ) simply b cos I totally adore Chimamanda. She's a living legend.
MUST WATCH!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLady Red says so!
This guy is a freak. I don't know why Nigerians are famzing him. HE IS WHITE ON THE BLOODY INSIDE, PLUS TALKS ABOUT 9JA LIKE WE'RE ON VILLAGE . TRY WATCHING HES ELLEN INTERVIEW.
