They basically overdose on this medicine recommended by doctors to help with cough. Wow!!
The demand for Codeine by these young folks is so high that it's now expensive and scarce. So, how did this start? Who figured that a cough syrup would make anyone high? I don't know much about this so let's discuss it here. Do you know people who overdose on Codeine? Is it as dangerous as they say it is? Has it ever killed anyone? Please share your thoughts...

Codeine is metabolized in the body to morphine which is a narcotic and is responsible for the 'high' feeling and of corse just as is the case for any kind of drug abuse, is dangerous to the body.

Codeine is even useless as a cough medicine and should be banned. I took it once, 2 years ago to heal my cough and instead of curing the cough, it just kept making me high. It would put you in one kind of "cloud 9 state" where all u want to do is to be very happy and to sleep. And then its very addictive. From taking 2 teaspoonfulls which I should have, i started taking it in gulps and within a day i had gulped the whole bottle and the cough didnt even go. It should really be banned

That is, it is no longer a medicine that you can obtain without a prescription. It is commonly abused and persons use it even when they have terrible side effects like seizures. Google codeine, seizures, Nigeria as search terms. I came across some interesting finds.

linda nwannem this is more than true. i know of a pharmacy shop(na chemist shop sha) in apapa near my hubby's office where a lot of runs girls and area boys plus even aged men come to do the "deed". they will buy it and mix with stuffs like alomo bitters, la casera and other regular drinks. some take half raw or sometimes mixed in whole with full bottle of their choice drinks. i personally know of one Baba of about 62 that regularly visited that place that died 3 years ago. even recently the owner of the chemist lost his sales boy in early december to same drug abuse (sadly he never knew his boy was not only a seller but also a user. people see it as a modern n coded way of gettting high without using the banned cocaine, igbo n d rest. To some its fashionable and assumed to hv less effect than the illegal substances. The most common victims are the mallams and aboki hawking one trade or another around the streets (shoe makers, tailors, meruwa,security...etc) they live on it all day. some take it like 3 square meal. These n more has made the product so scarce n expensive. Truth be told even Benylin , emzolyn and all d cough syrup ending with "lyn" has doubled or tripled in the market (note: the adult type oo). I wish the Fed govt trhu Nafdac will stop pretending n clean up this mess. most users are ignorant of the side effect while the pharmaceutical companies are busy makng returns. such drugs are meant to be sold with prescription only. ReplyDeleteLinda, This is a phenomenon that is fast gaining ground among the young ones. I've actually seen them consume the stuff, mostly with juice or other soft drinks. Attempts at counseling them are usually rebuffed. I also do not know the health implications of the habit but know that it does not forebode anything good.

ReplyDeleteMy 18 year old step son and his friends are hooked on it. Also actifed tablets gives a certain kind of high if you don't sleep after taking it because it make one drowsy. We just keep praying it doesn't do any permanent damage. The issue is that there is no proper drug control system in Nigeria. You can go to any corner chemist and buy drugs without prescription. Abroad, u can't buy more that two packs of Tylenol at a time.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very true story, so many young gals and guys from Okada and BIU universities do see dis as a means of getting high. A friend of mine do dis too, he is so addicted to codeine now

None of the other ingredients will get you high, all though they will kill you if you drink enough. If you insist on using DXM then just buy plain DXM instead of killing yourself with all those other ingredients.all in all it's not worth risking your life over. i don't know what has taken over the youths of these days, we have more drug addicts now than ever...

ReplyDeleteLinda, I know someone that takes it. She takes a bottle four times and still mix some weed in it. When she has money. She'll smoke S (ek) although not a regular smoker but she gets high a lot. She also pours the syrup on her spaghetti sometimes or cook very delicious INDOMIE with a lot of weed. A tasted a spoon 1 day and was sleeping throughout the day. I must confess that was the most delicious noodles I've ever tasted but I never tried it again. It's bad, it's addictive and it's evil. Linda, no try am o. I love you more than that.

People can overdose on codeine and there have been deaths recorded and near deaths. Example of a near death was Lil' Wayne; while that of a death case has been Pimp C (a black rapper in America). That is what's in vogue in some parts of America.

ReplyDeleteCodeine high has been around for ages and its not just young people. A lot of older hollywood stars have been known to use it - Matthew Perry (Chandler from friends) is one. It's getting common among the younger crowd as its cheap and prescription free.

ReplyDeleteEvery body in HNAUB gets high on codeine (minus me) I noticed it first when I had a flu and my syrup would miraculously disappear, and another time she described a bottle of benilyn as "her soul provider" although she insists she isn't addicted but I just shake my head when I watch her down a bottle my other friend look under her bed and all u see is empty codeine bottle it's really sickening and d bad thing about it is that when u r used to it u need a higher does to get d desired result, the more u do it the more of it u need until one day u will sleep and not wake up. ReplyDeleteWhere have u been Linda.. i've known this for as long as I can remember. It is a religious thing though. Muslims are not allowed to drink alcohol and since they want to get high. They drink codeine.
ReplyDeleteI am public health student Msc and I have been writing on substance abuse from my dissertation days....these things are not new....you are just seeing codeine..that just the beginning.People from my first research abuse things like paints,methylated spirits,camphor,alabukun for many insecure reasons and the details are alarming....substance abuse has become a menance in the society and it isn't just about the big names you know like cocaine and the likes...little things like codeine and the likes have silently crept in and is killing these young people.It is unfortunate that our Government don't want to do anything about it as other countries are taking deliberate efforts to reduce and stop this menance.Nigeria's attmpt at anything substance abuse since the early 90's has been the inauguration of NDLEA that only catch drug peddlers across the borders..what happens to our citizens?the young generation and future leaders?i am very passionate about substance misuse and would fight about it anywhere.Mayb LIB's need to go yaba left drug ward to see what I am talking about...it is pathetic...God help my country oo..!
