Nigeria in 2014: Fact Versus Fiction - Written by Reno Omokri

Reno Omokri is Special Assistant (New Media) to President Jonathan. His piece below...
I was about to write this piece detailing the positive effects of the Transformation Agenda when I was confronted with a hypocrisy which could possibly pass for the mother of all hypocrisies.
On the 18th of December 2013 several newspapers carried the statement from the All Progressive Congress, APC. While the different papers gave their own slant to the story, I particularly liked the headline from a major newspaper which said "Jonathan Must Respond to Obasanjo - APC". Continue...
Now, imagine my surprise that after President Goodluck Jonathan did exactly what the APC recommended, they changed their tune and on the 26th of December 2013 the headline changed to "APC berates Jonathan’s response to Obasanjo’s letter".

The story in fact was more telling with the Vanguard Newspapers writing that "The All Progressives Congress (APC) says the presidency has been greatly diminished by its decision to throw decorum to the wind and engage former President Olusegun Obasanjo".

With the above, it should now be obvious to objective citizen that the APC stands for nothing and is only against anything President Goodluck Jonathan does.

For instance, Senator Bola Tinubu had been one of the most vociferous champions for the convocation of a National Conference. He had championed this cause for years and many had come to think of the idea as his pet project.

At the first Anthony Enahoro Memorial Lecture in Benin City, Edo State which held on the 24th of November 2011, Bola Tinubu had said “I submit to you today that because of the multiple issues surrounding our skewed federalism and constitutional flaws, the Nigerian nation is weak...The 21-member Presidential Committee on the Review of Outstanding Constitutional Issues (PCROCI) recently set up by President Goodluck Jonathan falls short.  It is a backdoor approach to the issue of national conference. In memory of Chief Enahoro we must convoke a national conference.”

And when on October 1st 2013, President Jonathan listened to the cries of Nigerians and decided to convoke the very National Conference that Bola Tinubu advocated, the Asiwaju made a characteristic 360 degree turn and went on attack mode saying on October 6th 2013 “The national conference is by whom, for whom, and at what stage? How many levels of deception? I see a contradiction. I see diversion. I see deception, lack of honesty and integrity.”

If you think this is a case of multiple personality syndrome, you may have a point.

On the 25th of March 2013 after a birthday party that was reported in the media to have cost 1 billion Naira, Bola Tinubu gave an interview to The Sun Newspaper and said "There are so many news items that are seriously more newsworthy than to be looking for Obasanjo’s congratulatory messages in the newspaper. A man who had great opportunity to put Nigeria on the right path and failed to do so; failed to do even the Otta road, not Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. What am I celebrating about him? That’s the truth. He deceptively dealt with the country and he handed over to a man who knew he was ill. Obasanjo is a leader that could not find another successor capable of driving through his vision for the country”.

Imagine my surprise when nine months later on December the 22nd of 2013 the same Bola Tinubu was at former President Obasanjo's residence at Ota and told the  same man whom he had hitherto said "had great opportunity to put Nigeria on the right path and failed to do so" that "We’re resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator”.

How can these two statements be reconciled?

It is glaring to objective minds that the APC is a party without ideology, and a vision for Nigeria cobbled together by people without scruples who would be willing to work with anybody no matter how odious as long as that person has a grudge against President Goodluck Jonathan.

This is why they cannot argue with facts and figures against President Jonathan and must therefore conjure up lies, innuendo and propaganda.

The APC's attention is focused on the short term goal of securing political power by whatever means necessary. They have no long term focus of transforming the lives of Nigerians. Who has been to an APC rally, or heard an APC chief or chieftain being interviewed and heard them talk about their plans for the transformation of Nigeria?

Over the past year, as if choreographed, APC leaders have talked about 2015 in terms of doom, soaking people in blood, civil war, destruction and such militant language. Politicians ought to think in terms of welfare for the people not warfare for them. Talks of blood/war in 2015 are a result of poverty of vision. They have no vision so they feel must use scare tactics.

What makes these yesterday's men bitter enough to call for blood and gore? I posit that it is the misuse of the opportunities God gave them and the refusal to accept that it has shifted to others.

While the President stays on point talking about his vision for the future, their focus is on insulting and disparaging him. A persuasive leader is not weak and a coercive leader is not strong. Anyone can compel obedience by force but only the strong get it by non violent persuasion.

I often encounter people on Social Media telling me that the President and his team do not fight fire with fire and insults with insults. Insults are available to everyone but they are overlooked by those who want to rise but embraced by those who want to pull the risers down.

The Jonathan presidency is run on ideas because at the helm is a PhD leader who has voiced out severally that he believes in transforming lives rather than conforming to the status quo. Ideas are the building blocks of the Transformation Agenda. Ideas lead to cooperation thus expanding our sense of what is possible. Insults leads to isolation thus limiting our sense of what's possible. This is the basic difference between President Jonathan and the current opposition.

They have called the President a "clueless" leader who is running a "kindergarten presidency", but do the facts support what they claim.

The major leaders of the coalition of the desperate otherwise known as the APC have at one time or the other governed the whole of Nigeria or a major part of it, so they should be able to compare their record side by side the president and establish by such facts whether or not their claims of a clueless leader has any basis in fact.

Since they cannot do it, I will help them by bringing out facts about the Jonathan administration vis a vis what existed before this administration came to power.

They have said that the Nigerian Economy Under President Jonathan has Retrogressed. Is this true?

Here are the Facts with web based evidence so that my readers may trust what I write but verify for themselves:

Under President Jonathan Nigeria's Economy Has Grown To Become The Largest Economy in Africa. (tinyurl.com/pbbld8r)

They have said that President Jonathan Does Not Fulfill His Promises. Is this true?

Here are the Facts with web based evidence so that my readers may trust what I write but verify for themselves:

In 2011 President Jonathan Promised to Rebuild or Repair Nigeria's Roads. This Advert From ABC Transport Company (a Private Company) Is Proof He Is Fulfilling This Promise

In 2011 President Jonathan Promised to Revive Nigeria's Health Sector. By 2013 His Administration Has Built 3389 Heath Centers Nationwide. This Administration Built National Cancer Screening Centers nationwide, including at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau in Zamfara, The University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital and the National Obstetric Fistula Centre in Abakaliki. The Jonathan Led FG By 2013 Has Modernized the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and Built National Trauma Centers at the University of Abuja and the National Hospital also in Abuja.

These Investments in the Health Sector Led to the First Stem Cell Transplant Surgery Ever in Nigeria at UBTH in 2012. By October 2013 UCH Performed the First Open Heart Surgery in Nigeria.

In 2010 President Jonathan Promised to Overhaul Nigeria's Football and Sports Administration for Better Service Delivery. In 2013 Nigeria are the African Champions after Winning the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa. We are Also the World Under 17 Champions After winning The 2013 U-17 Tournament in The UAE. Nigeria Also Became the First African Nation to Qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

In 2010 President Jonathan Promised That Agriculture Would Be Revived. In 2011 Nigeria Imported $11 Billion Worth of Food Especially Rice and Wheat. In 2013, After the Introduction of Cassava Flour and The Duty on Imported Rice Which Led to Massive Local Production, Nigeria's food Import Bill Has Been Reduced by 77%.

3 Million Jobs Have  Been Created in the Agriculture Value Chain Since 2011. And Nigeria is amongst only a handful of countries that improved over the previous year I. The 2013 Global Hunger Index.

Fiction: Educational Standards are Falling in Nigeria.

Fact: In 2009 only 25.99 per cent of candidates had credits in English and Mathematics in the WASSCE examinations. By 2013 70% of students had credits in at least 5 subjects.

Conclusion: Don't Judge President Goodluck Jonathan and This Administration on the Fiction That Opposition Linked Propagandist Media Publish. Learn to Separate Facts From Fiction.

Reno

The project he started to give 3 million to youths looking to eatablish businesses has been going on and I know 5 people who have benefited from it. We need to learn that when we appreciate people, they are happy to do more. The only one we know is Bokoharam.

  26. You know, GEJ has done all these and personally I am aware of them and I congratulate him and his Government Ona relatively good job thus far. But here's the thing. Just like the tinapa project which came a decade before nigeria and nigerians could understand it yet alone appreciate it; nigerians are yet to understand and appreciate qualitative governance. It is indeed unfortunate that our bloods are hot and all we want to see are quantitatively oriented...constnt power supply. Free healthcare..social benefits..buildungs sprouting here and there ; but it is where we are and in order to carry everyone along with this transformation agenda he must come up with a systematic approach to satisfy these quantitative wants while simultaneously satisfying the qualitative aspects. By doing this, everyone would be in tune with a breath of fresh air and indeed our future will be waiting for us with open arms.

Feel the pause of boko-haram made widows, feel the pause of students that were home for five months, feel the pause of graduates without employment, feel the pause of those who have lost their jobs to bad governance, feel the pause of those who lost the only child to dilapidated roads. 63. To an objective citizen, quite reasonable arguments backed by reasonable evidence.
I understand Reno is paid to do a job and is part of team, but we the electorate deserve a separation of facts from fiction on other issues which Reno seems to forget or ignore -
-The reports of the president and his wife's shameful, and at the same time shameless intrusion into River's state politics. Why?
His wife's associates and general conduct often seem questionable (Evans Bipi and co.,her proclaimed disciples). She seems to be "everywhere", adversely.
-The handling of the NGF issue. What was so difficult to count? Mr President is a part of the party and there have been rumours about his interference to suit his own "plans". I hope the facts and fiction can be separated.
-While GDP, inflation and other measurable factors are looking good (according to the stats provided), these must ultimately translate to jobs, infrastructure and better living standards for the citizenry. These are in fact the (not so evident) end goals the citizens are crying for, and the reason we chase these stats initially.
While laudable, let's not be blinded by GDP and numbers, this is a human welfare and quality of life issue.
The job creation numbers have been miserable in relation to what's urgently required.
Security and many other issues can be questioned.
Anyway Reno and Rueben Abati must be commended for doing a great job in quite tough times.

  71. APC is just α bunch of thugs (Amaechi & Lloyd), Tinubu, well.. He used to be popular but now he's α typical politician (hypocrite), Buhari.. We know him.. He's unelectable. Okorocha.. Hehe.. APC can never win election in the east - look at how Ngige was messed up just because of his party.

But Jonathan should face reality.. His biggest enemies are those surrounding him. Look at exchange rate today- for α country that depends ση importation of finished goods that's catastrophic. Power supply is at the lowest of all time. Blatant corruption by the executive has never been worse - can't believe Udah is still α minister; imagine if it were OBJ administration (at least he pretended to fight corruption that's α +).

Therefore my brother.. Presido should deal with with the rats in his backyard.. They're pulling his house apart.

APC as a party has no vision for the country, they only want to pull GEJ administration down by painting it with lies.
    To me,they have different agenda.
Is this APC,a national party or religious party?.. This little fact would answer my question.it is left for u my fellow nigerians to tell yourself the truth and u actually think about APC as a party.
Could APC be the Nigerian version of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Party? Check out this: 1. Party Leader - North: Gen Muhammadu Buhari (Muslim). 2. Party Leader - South: Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Muslim). 3. National Chairman: Abdulkareem Bisi Akande (Muslim). 4. Deputy National Chairman: Aminu Bello Masari (Muslim). 5. National Secretary: Tijjani Musa Tumsah (Muslim). 6. Deputy National Secretary: Nasir El-Rufai (Muslim). 7. National Publicity Secretary: Lai Muhammad (Muslim). 8. National Treasurer: Sadiya Umar Faruq (Muslim) 9. National Financial Secretary: Alhaji Shaibu Musa (Muslim). 10. National Youth Leader: Abubakar Lado (Muslim). 11. National Legal Adviser: Muiz Banie (Muslim). 12. National Deputy Auditor: Bala Jibrin (Muslim). 13. National Women Leader: Sharia Ikeazor (Muslim convert). 14. EX-officio Member: Muniru Muse (Muslim). 15. EX-officio Member: Alhaji Yemi Sanusi (Muslim). Yet, these people want us to believe they are PROGRESSIVES and that APC is a national party. Just a few questions for Rhino; What was Naira to Dollar exchange last year and what is it now, what was power generation couple of years back and what is it now, what was our external reserve couple of years back and what is it now, how many Nigerians graduated a couple of years back and how many of them have job now, how secured are Nigerians today as against a couple of years back, above all, how has our national budget met with global standards in terms of percent allocation to Education, Health and other vital sectors. The issues are certainly more fundamental than this character assasination tour which Rhino has embarked on LIB.

Has he considered the level of corruptions in the corridors of power? The president traveling to neigbouring country in 7 jets and even making provision for another one in his new budget? where did Dokubo get the money he used to build a University? what hope does the youth and young of this nation have left? Is there even a mirage of a better tomorrow for this country under the PDP administration?

As I comment I am travelling frm Lagos 2 Anambra and I tell u sir,no president in his ryt mind will leave lagos I.b expressway the way it is, even the oda roads 2 Anambra are filled with all sort of deadly port holes and the likes! Pls tell the president 2 make the citizens feel his impact as president,if he is rily working, when pythons like Apc raise, it is d citizens who are enjoying deir gout that will slice of it off,not u Mr Reno. 116. GEJ is our President come 2015. Like u rightly said, APC has no vision for Nigeria. They are just a hungry lion's for power by all means possible. They are hypocrites and propagandas of visionless group. APC started failing from the acceptance of the defected candidates of the PDP and going to see OBJ, did not only proved they are visionless, but also showed their despiracy for power by any means, irrespective of whomever that is against GEJ and his admiration. Have u people heard any word from Gen IBB nor Gen Abdusalam Abubaka? Like what Iyabo OBJ's daughter told the farther that, u do not do to others what u will not want to be done to u! OBJ is angry because he feels like GEJ has disappointed him. Has he(OBJ), forgotten that he also disappointed the North, especially IBB and Abdusalam? OBJ is a manipulator, liar and a devil, and he is about in the same act with the APC. My advice for OBJ is, he should just remain in Ota Farm and never tries to delve into the affairs of Nigeria, else he will be more of an object of ridicule by even children. APC, go and do your home work and then come back, because you are not yet qualified to handle the affairs of our country Nigeria! Mr president sir, keep your focus and the almighty God will help u and our nation through all these huddles, because u have done marvellously well in this past years of your tenor in almost all ramifications of your promises. But please sir GEJ, improve in the area of corruption, because I know you can do it, to prove you are not weak, but rather taking things one step at a time! I believe with you, we will get there by God's grace.

All these things reno is boasting about is what the common man doesn't even see, there has been no significant improvement in quality of our lives. I want to see electricity 24/7, I want to enter car parks/garages with properly built terminals. Well cemented and organized. I want to browse unlimitedly monthly for a fee. I want to walk into my lecturers office and feel it air conditioned just like that of his compatriots in private universities. I want our police to be so content with their salary that he wouldn't need 20naira bribe. I want the police force to be so attractive to even foreign trained graduates. I want our streets to be clean like that of our small neighboring ghana. These are the types of things Reno should come and boast about. I want to see low cost moderate houses from government for newly employed graduates all over the country where the rent could be monthly. I want a professional fire service like what we have in the movie fireproof. I want a professional bartender that went to a culinary school to mix my cocktails in the bars. I want compulsory free quality education up to secondary level that will challenge private and mission schools. Are these things too much to ask,? Stop telling us to read presidents achievements online. We want to feel and see the promised breadth of fresh air. I have been to so many countries that don't have anything compared to the vast resources we are blessed with enjoying these things. War torn Kosovo of yesterday can boast of all these thins and better fresh air than we can. Take a walk into the university of ghana. No private university can boast of having the same amenities and standard. Yet we claim to be giants of Africa, we should first change our minds before we can change our condition, all these politicial battles back and forth Is shortsighening. Why can't a graduate from a normal average middle class home finish his NYSC today and marry his girlfriend tomorrow and they move into an apartment and pay monthly while they do their various jobs to make ends meet? Why isn't there anything like a credit score in Nigeria? Do the youths even know what it means? But this is their right, they have been suppressed so much that they don't even know what quality life is anymore. I have traveled the world to all continents and I have seen. Nigeria is not fair to itself, it's citizenry and it's a failed state. May God save Nigeria.

This fool is comparing apples to oranges to prove his lazy points. If in 2009 only 25.99% had credits in English and Mathematics, the only way to show an improvement is to tell us what percent had credit in English and Mathematics in 2003, not the percentage who had credits in 5 subjects. Or in the alternative tell us what percent had credits in 5 subjects in 2009.

This by same Goldman Sachs economist who predicted rise of Brasil, Russia, India, China, & South Africa in 2001. And of the 4 MINT countries, guess which he says is most promising: Nigeria. If the president was so clueless and doing everything wrong, I wonder if fortunes of the nation could've been steered in such promising direction. A painful fact is, when economies begin to recover, the rich feel it first, then the innovators, then on it trickles down as they're the job creators. Issues of human rights, freedom of speech et al are felt by everyone else.

I don't see the reason for these insults on the author or the president. We all have the right to express our views;you don't have to like it and it doesn't calls for insults. I remembered many years ago the regime of Buhari was severely critised by almost all Nigerians but thereafter praised for the measures taken to correct the ills of the society not long after they were ousted.
I think an objective assessment and review of Jonathan's administration is what we need and not a blanket and blind condemnation. So, guys let take an objective appriasal before commenting.
My view, Johanthan's administration is not perfect but certainly there are some good developments we can count that have taken place and we need to give him credit for such. Rome wasn't built in a day.

  150. My opinion is that this young man does not believe half of all he has written. All is wishful Thinking! No need to attack APC. If we find a good man to rule Nigeria and he is a foreigner, then by all means let him rule. It isn't about political parties but about giving good governance to the people and completely eradicating corruption which is designed bane of our problems..........
The president is surrounded by hypocrites who hurl insults and burns all his bridges rather than mend them.
Nigeria has lost all standing with the international community, even with other African countries; eg Mandela burial.......It is so sad. Ghana sacked someone who said she had Plans to be corrupt. Yet from the gate men to the top people around the presidency have sacked are are still sacking us dry. And we are still blinded? Smh, which way Nigeria? Which way?
I haven't ever commented, this is a first for me and I took my time to read the young man's writeup.

  153. Reno, it becomes more obvious everyday that your parents wasted the sexual experience that created you. Will you say all this if you were not being paid by GEJ?

  156. My Igbo folks are all over this thread giving GEJ all the ethnic and religous hailings they can muster. Unfortunately for you guys, our region is the least populated in Nigeria and all your senseless praises are probably attracting more enemies for GEJ from the other regions who have seen through GEJ's ethnic agenda. Sorry for this President who has no genuine purpose.

  157. I am particularly happy on this article as it touches the very issues of national importance, though to some extent. The truth always remains the truth no matter how one tries to distort them. Mr Reno, indeed has brought thoroughly researched facts and figures and though he is an adherent supporter of his boss,he has brought to the fore reasons for Nigerians to truly assess the GEJ Administration and also assess the the criticisms of the opposition. I must not fail to say, that everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, but it behooves me to see that a lot of us can't truly spare time to read an article as lettered as this one,and yet we criticise just some points we manage to read. I truly appreciate those who took time to read it through and thoroughly dissect it wit credible comments. In all,let us learn to appreciate our Leaders and support them with ptayers and our own sincerity in our own enclaves. And mind u,I as a person, didn't vote for a party, but for the individual whose ideals were appealing to see this country grow and that was President Jonathan, unlike many of us,who believe its all about party or its like. And to the issue of security,I believe we need to ask APC a question on that,as one of their Chieftain, made that comment of making the nation ungovernable,in which since then, there has been crises. So,please let's pray for our leaders and our dear country

  158. APC - Association Of Political Criminals. They are after GEJ because GEJ has not given them opportunity to be part of his govt. All the key players in APC have been in govt in this country at one point or the other.. Let them give us statistics of their achievement if they are real. GEJ is far better to the APC - Association of Political Criminals

  162. Nigerians are gullible and emotional. Because of paper statistics, u are all dillusioned. If Jonathan loves u students, why did he allow you to stay @ home for 5months b4 he now responded to ASUU plight. Reno does not have any right to state all d achievements made by Jonathan, let d citizenry be d judge.
