Journalist Karen Eloke Young speaks out on sexual harrassment

The former MBGN contestant turned journalist shared her bitter experience in the hands of a house owner in Lagos. It's a really sad tale and I'm sure a lot of single girls will identify with her story. See her tweets after the cut...

For this to make sense to you, you have to read from bottom up...

    3. I Don't want to know you! @ I know you. You speak like a fool in the UK usa and SA they have a civil court system where victims can seek compensatiom from the pervert that attacked them. Also many in Nigeria are living from day to day in a land whetr Phd holders are applying for drivers jobs ! Everyone is vulnerable cause we all need the opportunity but few of us refuse to sell our souls to feed the devil. It's a horrible situation and for you to comment the way you did shows you have no idea what goes on in Nigeria. Please before you criticize research the topic!

      Delete
    5. U are very stupid for your comment, so because she bleached her skin she deserves to be harassed? I'm sure you are a woman, and you are spewing out such trash about ur fellow woman, FYI sexual harassment doesn't always have to do with the way a woman dresses or appears, In my days as a spinster, I experienced harassment, (and I can proudly say I was and still am a decent young woman), but I'd say thank God I won the battle. if you have sisters or daughters you would never support or justify sexual harassment, cos not everyone is lucky or even strong enough to come out of the experience without being psychologically traumatised.

Sad part about it is not even a gram pf shag will be given...nobody really cares.
Like she rightly stated,Nigeria's problem is way bigger than a corrupt government;the citizenry are an epitome of moral decadence.
Its gonna be hard for the "Single lady with money=Slut" stereotype to be broken in Nigeria.
We are all guilty in one way or another of bringing our beloved nation to the sorry state it is now.
Male chauvnists constantly exhibiting their superiority over females,Feminists always trying to go against the grain to prove that no man is worth being above them...
    Guilty,we all are!

  24. Wow women do go through hell in this country! Reminds of an argument I had with some guys about you Linda! Men have little regards for women, especially the working class lady. They say they don't want a housewife, but they are threatened by a successful woman! If a woman has money, then she f*cked to get! That's just a warped way of thinking! The NAS need to enact a law to protect women ASAP or cases like this and the Ejegbo will continue to happen!

    ReplyDelete
  25. True o! Ah ah calm down nah, you're a beautiful woman, that one comes a lot, that doesn't mk the lady a public property, some men are pathetic, they go about it with no shame, some do it in open and hidden places, like to have you is their legal right, its so easy for men to get things this days than for women, for men, if they don't like what u have to offer they tell u no, but if it good enough you are given a chance, but women, whether what u hv is good enough or not, you have to bend to their rules first, its indeed a man world.

  29. I think this is commendable, female sexual harassment and abuse is an ugly monster that must be exposed and death with now,I hope both young and old will rise up and say no and it start from saying no where you are, don't allow yourself, daughters, friends, sisters or neighbors be abused or harassed or put in a position that makes them open to abuse but my sisters let's learn to be independent, strong and confident so that men can learn to respect us and be forced to take us serious. No one is superior to another, everyone has unique strengths and weaknesses. A man doesn't own a woman, you can only have authority over your wife or children just like a boss will have authority in the office whether be it a man or woman. I'm sure this is to maintain order amongst other things.

  34. I feel her pain, Nigeria has no respect for women.I see it everyday in my office. You get sexually harassed by customers and male colleagues. They make all sort of sexual innuendos and really the only thing you have to do to solicit such remarks is have a vagina. Nigeria has no respect for Women, quiet sad but we can help the future generation by training our children (males) properly right from a young age so they do not continue the trend.

  35. How to lose an argument tip 1: Claim to be superior. Automatically 95% of the audience stop listening because they think you're a dick. I agree with you that sexism is too much of a problem in naija sha.

  39. What step did you take when you were harrassed by these people to seek redress or did you just let go? If nothing then it means you through your inaction encouraged these and other men of low esteem to escape unpunished. Seek redress in the law court, these people deserve to be exposed.

  40. I feel her pain and I totally understand were she's coming from the mentality about women having to spread their legs to get to were their going is really much talk less about a landlord wat an IQ nd to tink some women have accepted this to be there faith is even is so heart breaking..I FULLY SUPPORT YOU

  41. She has ended up saying alot without making sense.....She can pass her message diligently and more intelligently across without the use of profane and vulgar words.

I am against and I totally abhor sexual harrassment, sexual abuse and any sort of the kind that seeks and serves to denigrate women. However, if a message has to be passed across, it must be done in a co-ordinated and intelligent manner.

I believe when she used Mandela as an example of a fight against social injustice and apartheid, I have never read or seen any where Nelson Mandela used profanity and vulgarity against his oppressors.

Miss Karen E. Young, if your struggle is against sexual harassment and sexual abuse, I support you. But if you intend using profanity and vulgarity to pass your message across, then no one will listen to you.

    2. @St. Edwin... When you've been objectified for years and can still maintain your cool, you can judge someone for expressing frustration with profanity... I'm a guy, never been sexually harassed before (well I don't think I have anyways), but 10 minutes in Lagos traffic can force me to use some rather colorful languages to express my frustration (I'm sure you can relate if you live in Lag)... So I believe she's earned the rights to express hers however she deems fit... Afterall, she's only been harassed for a better part of her life...

  62. I feel your pain my dear. That is the fate of women in this part of the world. it is bound to change someday but it takes time. A woman is never considered to be successful or happy no matter how much she earns or has AChieved, until she gets attatched to a man. If not,she will be tagged a hoe. They think every woman is expected to open her legs as long as a man is willing to get in between them. Sometimes I don't blame them. They act out of experience cos some women have lost every sense of pride they have left in themselves. I know it will change someday but the truth remains that its going to take Time.

I work hard for my money, I have a business I run and I get angered when I can't even get something even as little as gadget or some other item and you get comments like "shebi na man kuku give am the money". A society where every young legal, budding and/or thriving lady is referred to as an "ashewo" or "runs girl". I vehemently refused to be tagged as such.
I want her to know she's not alone in the fight to reclaim women's dignity and return our pride and self respect as a human being. This must stop, this nationwide sociopathic degradation.

However, she is looking at the wrong places for causes and cures, to find the root she should just check all the local cultures and religions (local & imported) in Nigeria, they all insist that a woman's place is behind that of a man. Liberate people from religion and culture and things will change.

It is almost like out of every 10 girls you meet right now, 7 of them will sleep with you for money. I am speaking from experience. It is really alarming right now in Lagos (and Nigerian as a whole). I feel her pain sha.

But she can make her case better by covering up herself a lil bit. For example, no one would see a girl dressed like Linda out there and think she is a runs girl. So, she should start by dressing a lil more appropriate. And, just in case she is reading this, she can come and live with me for the main time, I have an extra room.

  97. She's right! Sexual harassment is a norm in Nigeria .beautiful or ugly, any human with boobs or a vagina is tormented .I have also been a victim. Just the way politicians use poverty to oppress the poor so is feminity used as a weapon of oppression against women.this damages a woman's psyche and makes her socially withdrawn nd psychologically powerless. Funny,we have to use the same weapon as the oppressor...fathers have to protect their daughters!fathers in power have to make laws that protect women and keep it implemented. Women in power hav to rise to this ....the female senators have to rise up........it could be your daughter or niece next time.I have said that I would kill anyman who tries anything with my daughters.I protected myself growing up nd I will gov my breath to protect my children

I go through sexual harassments on daily bases yet I can't rant or show my true feelings when even the person you are to report to wants you too. The status quo- if you want to keep you job or avoid necessary hardship, bare the harassment with a smile and don't give attitude.
It's sickening, it's a damper on my moral and work motivation.
Now, a stiff law against sexual harassment will make much more sense than the dumb ass anti gay law. I don't consent to being sexually harassed just because I'm female. It's my right.

  125. This sexual harassment issue is at its peak. We suffer this everyday. I can relate to her story cos I had my fair share whilst growing up. And to be honest it doesn't only happen to we women, it also happens to guys. I have a number of male friends that have told me they were disvirgined by their housemaid/cousins/sister's friends. And these things are still happening. Its not necessarily the fault of our gov't. The change starts with the man in the mirror. Gov't will not use a duck tape to hold the penis of a pervert to his waist or use needle and thread to sew up the vagina of nympho. Let the change begin from inside, its truly a sad story but I think the Landlord should be sued. Meanwhile as a journalist this is a good story for the newspapers not just online journalism.

  130. For starters hoes, lose girls, bitches, skreps, runs girls, are all different entities.

I feel your pain though, the world is such a cruel place and there is so much to wish for from the way the people of the world act. But first of all, just as this world is cruel to you women, it is to us men too.. The difference is that one sees it faster than the other.. Which is why most middle-aged women tend to end up better human beings than men, who are still getting high on the juice of life, till it knocks them into the gutter.

However, a civilian that runs bare-chested into the front line of any battle, will only be devoured. He might seem brave, but he will only suffer or die. Even warriors leave wars with scars and like they say, they die by the sword.

This is why protection is needed. And even though bravery is a commendable attribute, the wise thing to do, is to be protected.

A woman needs protection, every woman does. Also men need too. And that protection can only be found in God. For that to work, you need to humble yourself before him. Also you need to fight those same attributes that don't allow you humble yourself to him.

Are you under God's cover or your own imagined one??

By the way, about the marriage thing, it is more about being under some sort of cover. Those old folks that seem to have outdated ideas, know that it is only the sheep that finds a worthy shepherd that can have hope of not being devoured.

A good man will be your cover.

This is not to say you are weaker, it is just that the system we were born into doesn't favour everyone. Infact you are stronger, because you have qualities that can make or destroy men, but like everything on this earth, you have weakness. And like any good warrior will tell you, you have to play to your strength.

    Be wise

  132. Whilst your Government should be passing laws to tackle corruption, sexual harassment, kidnappings and bringing labour laws into force, they make the anti-gay law their priority and majority of you cheered in celebratory mood thereafter. The gays are consensual adults. The issues I mentioned above aren't consensual to a great degree! Stupid leaders are chosen out of the abundance of stupid people. It is simply logical that we are where we are today.
