Time for an ethical revolution on social media - by Reno Omokri

A piece written by Reno Omokri, Special Assistant to President Jonathan on New Media
Social Media and the technologies that drive it were intended to be a force for social good that expanded the individual's reach beyond his physical proximity. However, over the years since the emergence of the medium many of its users are beginning to see a negative side of its use amongst young people which must be addressed otherwise it will lead to an erosion of core societal values.
As a youth and young adult, many of those in my age bracket learnt the art of reading people's non verbal communications or body language by practicing whole body listening and it helped us grow from self awareness to awareness of others and from self management to relationship management. But today, many young adults are unable to develop these vital skills because more of their communication are done over social media.
Youths have learnt the art of reading the keypads of an iPhone or blackberry device without looking at it and can even Instant Message a friend while driving without looking at the keypad. The non verbal language they read meanings to are emoticons.

Psychologists have written that a youth's social and emotional maturity derives from physical contact and conversation he or she has with everyone he encounters in the course of growing up. We are told that these interactions even help shape brain development and stimulates the parts of the brain that regulates empathy and morality. The less of these kinds of interactions they have the less their ability to empathize.

And so, gradually, our children and young adults are losing the art of relating and gaining the skill of communicating. Relationships teach the growing child how to empathize-that is to understand and share the feelings of another person. Since one on one relationships are giving way to social communications via devices that don't require physical proximity, many young persons are growing to be adept at written communication skills and are missing out on other levels of communications that help them empathize with the other person.

I never knew the level of this problem until this year. Even though the Social Media age has led to a massive reduction in attention span such that what happened yesterday is old news, some people may still remember that some high profile public figures had health scares this year.

First, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), a former military Head of State had to go on an extended medical trip to Europe sometime in 2013. Everybody is subject to ill health. It is part of being human. But imagine my surprise when young persons on Social Media who were on the other side of the political divide from that to which the General subscribes to began to celebrate his ill health and wishing him the worst. I was appalled. I know that politics is war by other means, but even in war you don't attack the sick. The Geneva convention expressly makes it a war crime to attack a hospital or any place where people are being treated.

I wondered to myself, where is our humanity? I have never liked Muhammadu Buhari's brand of politics, but I am able to separate him from his politics and I respect him for the consistently loyal following he is able to command in certain parts of the country. He is first and foremost a human being and Jesus taught us that we do not have to like our neighbour but we do have to love them and to love a neighbour is to wish for them what you wish for yourself.

And then in November of 2013 President Goodluck Jonathan was slightly indisposed while attending the Honorary International Investors Council in London and the presidency very proactively informed Nigerians and gave them up to date information on the president's state of health.

And this time, those on the other political divide unleashed their arsenal. Without a shred of sympathy for the humanity of the president, a certain website known for the most sensational headlines went to town with obvious lies about the president. Egged on by certain ex government officials who themselves have been recipients of the president's empathy when they suffered recent loss, some young persons took to social media platforms to disparage the president even wishing him the worst.

And then some weeks ago, the news of the proposed bill to jail those who libeled others and incited the public on social media for seven years was at the fore front of the media. The reaction to this proposed bill on social media was an indication that the medium is in dire need of a moral compass.

By virtue of the position I hold, I was the recipient of the angst of many opposition leaning young people. They accused me and the presidency of attempting to muzzle opposition via a bill they considered as draconian. Articles disparaging the federal government were written within the space of a few hours of the bill coming to light and no indecent word was spared.

But after it came to light that the bill which they considered obnoxious was in actual fact the brain child of an All Progressive Congress senator, Olugbenga Kaka, these same youths switched and maintained social media silence. Their criticism ceased and their anger was stifled. Very soon, the issue died a natural death. It became obvious that these opposition leaning youths, egged on by those who have come to be known as 'overlords' thought they had a potent political weapon against the ruling party and when the issue backfired their hypocrisy was exposed. They have no moral compass and cannot be counted upon to resist injustice no matter who perpetrates it. Their ethics are situational and depends on who is involved.

After watching these scenarios unfold and countless others, it became clear to me that many young people are clueless about how to interact with a flesh and blood human though they are proficient in the art of communicating with a digital person they cannot physically see, feel and touch.

In the military, soldiers are taught how to dehumanize the enemy so that they can fight them. They are taught not to see them as human, but to see them as the enemy, the villain, the reason you are in the trench rather than at home with friends and family. It is this dehumanization that gives many a soldier the Dutch courage to do to opposing soldiers what they would never have thought themselves capable of doing.

I think that Social Media, especially in the hands of unscrupulous politicians has succeeded in dehumanizing public figures to many of our youths so that they see those on a political divide other than the one they support in perhaps the same way as they see a target in a video game such as Mortal Combat.

Why else would some young persons join an obviously bitter man in mocking a man who is praying to his God or erupt in choreographed celebration over the news that a governor has been involved in a car crash?

So, what is the solution to this loss of empathy and a moral compass that is festering amongst our youth on Social Media?

I think it is time for responsible adults who command any considerable following on Social Media to use whatever influence they have to introduce ethics into their use of Social Media. This will have a pyramid effect. If young people see that their celebrities as well as political and cultural icons are guided by a code of ethics which restrains them and keeps them from engaging in actions that are repugnant to the morals they had while growing up in the real world, the ripple effect would eventually reach them and in time lead to a paradigm shift that curbs some of these behaviors I have just described.

So, what would this ethical code be? As one who has read from both The Holy Bible and The Qur'an, I propose that we begin with a principle that both books teach.

In Matthew 7:12, Jesus introduced the famous Golden Rule "do to others what you would have them do to you". In one of the most well known hadiths of prophet Mohammed (SAW) he said “None of you [truly] believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself”.

I suggest that this Golden Rule should be imbibed by all celebrities as well as Political and Cultural icons on Social Media.

And how would it work?

Life on earth is a duality. In most cases, you are faced with an either or situation. For instance, you either supported President Goodluck Jonathan in the last presidential election in 2011 or you supported another candidate.

So, let's say for instance that you supported candidate Buhari. In that case, what you don't wish for Buhari, don't wish it for President Goodluck Jonathan and vice versa for those who supported candidate President Jonathan.

For further example, you don't have to wish for the success of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP if you support the All Progressive Congress, APC, however, you do have to restrain yourself from celebrating say an unfortunate accident that befell a governor just because he is PDP and you are APC.

Let's shift away from the politics of bitterness in favour of the politics of betterness. Let's discard our arsenal of insults and abusive words in favour of an arsenal of ideas and strategies.

If those at the top of the pyramid can check themselves along these guidelines, Social Media can become once again the force for social good that it was designed to be and empathy and a moral compass can once more thrive amongst our young people as it did when some of us were ourselves young adults.

The youth are the Vanguard of our future and if you as a celebrity or political/cultural icon don't feel the need to help cleanse social media of this malaise, it could be your turn tomorrow. Nobody knows tomorrow, so you do not have to wait until it happens to you before you take corrective action.

As for those elders who stoke such divisive and inhuman tendencies on social media, they may choose to continue feeding the habit of hatred and bitterness, but as has been said time and again, hatred and bitterness are futile for the same reason that it is futile to consume poison and hope that it will kill your enemy. By the time they realize how much damage they have done to their reputation it will be too late. Let us hope however that these drowning men do not take gullible youths down with them even as discerning youths know that they never courted them when the going was good for them politically.

Regards,
Reno Omokri

    2. Wow! Edjucative I must say, I agree with Mr omokri political leaders should stop attacking one another using the media just because they are from a different party, they should work together for a Better Nigeria, that's one of the reasons why Nigeria is backward and still drifting backward, cos most of our politicians are selfish and desperate and will do anything discredit whatever positives politicians from other party implement or do for a better Nigeria

  14. Mr Reno. There are positives and negatives to your article/proposal. Taking noting away, also with almost everything in life.
First and foremost, I would employ you to have a different view on Sahara Reporters. I truly believe, they are a breath of fresh air to the way information is been disseminated about our country. Talking about vile abuse on social media, I experienced first hand Mr Okupe abusing Mr Sowore on CNN. You want public figures to be an example ?, I hope it starts with your co-workers. From what I have seen, If the abuse you are getting from youths or whoever is to much or negative then change your approach. For example, stop asking questions - Do you have electricity? Is the road good? . Rather make statements - look at the road we built in this period of time. look at that community with constant electricity for the past 6 months. I can bet my life, no matter the negative or ill will abuse you get, it would never surpass the positive abuses. It is true that the way youths use social media is disheartening. But, like I said, people will always find a way to use things/materials positively and negatively. Introducing ethical platform is a good way to make that shift happen from negative to positive. I commend your proposal.

P.s Linda, Still want to take you out. hugs. :)

  19. Reno Omokri is just another puppet and manipulative politician under GEJ's wing. "A Politician" is defined as a person who acts in a manipulative and devious way, typically to influence or control people's mind and actions.

And its so ridiculous how many Nigerian politicians always manipulate people's mind by bringing religion into politics because many Nigerians are known to be highly religious beyond reasoning; in an attempt to soften the mass on criticizing a corrupt govt. using a powerful tool: SOCIAL MEDIA.

Do the people good, we go hail you. Do the people bad or neglect us, we go bash you...it's that simple. He made some good points tho, no doubt about that.

Anyway sha, let him bring his ethical revolution to Nollywood Social Network

  20. Seriously, this man is talking rubbish. Is he angry that people finally have a medium to vent their spleen and have a say in the nonsense being heaped on them by this age-long non-retiring politicians?

  21. I am very indifferent about Reno O ,but honestly, what he just wrote makes a lot of sense, this days, people just have venoms on their fingers waiting 2 sting 2 death every and anything that crosses their part, most times they even sting before they pause to think and realise you didn't even mean any harm in the 1st instance. Social Media is truly becoming a blessing and curse to our generation.
Amazingly and Annoyingly so,majority of the people who crticize without empathy are the kind of people that commit suicide when they are given a lil dose of what they dish out 2 others. Let's learn to empathize,we must not say it @ that moment that we feel like. Tact and Diplomacy teaches us to know what to say, when to say it and how to say it. Youths of our time think they are smart, most times and can blurt out (even in writing) whatever it is they want 2 say, truth is,like Olamide, stupidity has taken over.........

  22. Good write up Mr Reno a question for you, has the same people at the helm of affairs making stupid policies affecting the daily lives of Nigerians put a human face to most of the policies they sign into law that we the current young adults need to be emphatic about how we use the digital pen.

Corruption, lack of integrity & Values on the part of some of our leaders have created a situation whereby the youth now lack respect for leaders.

Leaders should be inspiring,,,but some Nigeria leaders have made Nigeria what I will call a dismal failure....

  29. Reno,

First and foremost, when you cite any kind of work, please ensure to give references to those works at the end of your article.
I do not have the time or energy to pull apart your long winded essay but here's the bit i'll address:
For years, Nigerians have had to deal with a coliseum of thieving, corrupt, no good leaders who have left more of a negative print on Nigeria than any good. We the youth have sought ways to express our disappointment and anger but seeing how those before us have been gunned down mercilessly, it is only safe for us to hide behind our media devices to vent our anger.
Social media is a two way street, what you put in is what you get. For as long as your boss's regime reeks of corruption, unemployment, injustice, economic crises, etc, the youth of the country will continue to attack via social media. Heck, even counties were the system works get heckled by people who are not 100% satisfied, how much more a nation where nothing absolutely functions!
Please don't come here to tell me how to use social media; the condition in which I see my home country pains me enough to utilize this tool to vent.
I recently visited Nigeria and had to travel from Lagos by road to other parts of the country; between Lagos and the border of Ondo state, there were no less than 6 or 7 police check points and my driver got pulled over 4 times. Haven determined we have all the necessary papers, the policemen came to my window, "madam, anything for the boys?" We were not allowed to move for another 15 min until something for the boys surfaced. Multiple 15min by 4 places so you can see how much time the Nigerian Police Force wasted my time.
Please tell me why would I not chew them out on Social Media? I wouldn't do so in their presence for fear of being gunned down mercilessly. Many have lost their lives this way and NOTHING was done.
So please once again, tell your people that we are hungry for a better Nigeria. Until then, you cannot sensor how we choose to attack.

I have seen it happen but the worst of it is that the reason why they laugh at your pain some times is one evil they claim you did but you know in your heart you did not do that evil which they claimed. Please let's criticize someone with noticeable facts and not to kill the person with mouth and openly wish him or her dead. Is the worst sin

Reno's write up is excellent, i totally agree. Maybe Linda you can start by censoring more comments, i know you delete some already which is the essence of comment moderation, but i think you need to go a bit further and reduce these insults on people. We should learn diplomacy, and not tear down people and affect them emotionally. Celebrities, politicians are all humans and sinners just like we all.Nobody is perfect. Let us play our own part well as good citizens, protest when we need to and be mindful of our language on social media. Lets be more prayerful, dutiful and leave vengeance and judgement in the hands of God. Lastly, Do unto others what you want them to do unto you. Peace!!

While I agree that most of what we see are emotions and teenagers/preteens have the gift of anonymosity to vent, they take it to a ridiculous level and most just cannot seperate reality from fiction, lies from half truths and discern what makes sense and what doesn't; reno has to realize that this could be a tool and the opposition has long realised that and re using it to their cheap scores.
Folks used to be more understanding when they followed GEJ's plan on facebook. While he cannot personally manage it, he can time and again interract. He has an abysmal PR team! What they feed him beats my imagination and for someone like maku to say publicly GEJ brought facebook to nigeria shows his roboust mentality! Jst my piece of mind.

    ReplyDelete
  51. mr Reno you have some points but your whole piece is illogical!!! Why? You may ask, I think the question you should ask is why does it happen? Now let me tell you why
    1. ''Unemployment in the country'', while you guys are buying Armored cars others are roaming the streets in search of jobs that don't exist.
    2. ''Ritual killings'' the masses are killed without mercy, remember ''Okija shrine''
3.''Corruption'' the country is in a pitable state as a result of corruption, so who do you want us to have empathy for? Is it Ibori, Alams, Lucky Igbenedion, Babagida, Obasanjo, Oduah, Gej or his wife, David Mark, Bankole, should I continue? The names are endless.
4.''Poverty'' is it the suffering masses that you require empathy from?, the young students that has to do ''runs'' to pay their bills! are they the ones you want empathy from? Tell me?.
What you have written is tantamount to beating Someone and telling the person not to cry, the lack of empathy! You noticed are the cries of the masses, now this bill you talked about is equally tantamount to beating someone and as soon as the person starts to cry you sill he's mouth and continue with the beating, now this is wrong in so many ways.
People please don't be carried away by the slyness of this government paid Deciver, now if they have their way I will go to jail for seven years for saying what I have just said can you Imagine? You can't eat your cake and have it! Do that which is good and the empathyless masses will grow empathy shikena.

Enhen! The bill I want to here off is the China kind of bill you know? The one whereby a politician or public servant is KILLED for stealing public money :-)

  53. Okay nice article I must say. But ur talking bout pple respecting politicians n wat not wen these pple r suffering. No light, no water, inadequate healthcare, no jobs, even the few that are employed are being taxed heavily, bad roads everywhere!! Yet u say dey shud ave empathy for the same politicians who promised them milk and honey and instead delivered cow dung to them!?? Dude pls, d masses are bitter...dat is common knowledge, give them something to smile and be happy for and ur politicians will not be abused and/or cursed out. That's all.

  54. Reno bros - you fall my hand big time. I saw the caption and I started hyperventilating in anticipation of a big pronouncement and since you have not made it, I will refuse to introduce it here. Then I read and read and read till the end. Reno telling us to create an ethical code of conduct. Bros Reno, as long as one can afford to be faceless or an alias on social media, there will never be true civility because ultimately what keeps us in check is the knowledge that our identity is tied to our actions and utterances [putting aside persons with verbal diarrhea]. What you need is that other plan you failed to mention or think of because you are in response rather than propose mode. You should be on the offensive, not the defensive. In the defensive position you react, not create. Ah, I am dying from not seeing a proposal for real action.

  55. Linda, I hope they paid you for posting this Aso rock writeup. If no, then make them pay you for their eye service writeups going forward.

Mr Writer, people also commend politicians that do good deeds on social media. Jonathan's first campaign was based on social media. Remind us again why he opened a facebook account?

Instead of writing about social media overhaul, advise your Oga on good governance. It is only corrupt government that won't tolerate criticism. Even Obama gets critisized on live TV and radio. You can't take away people's freedom of expression which is what social media has given them. Gone are the days you will take soldiers to a TV station and arrest them for broadcasting news Oga at the top doesn't like.

    Writer ko, poet ni.

Linda, if you don't post this eh, e go pain me. No easy to type for phone.

  56. Social media has turned to a 2way dialogue... Where many talk to many.. Not just to broadcast and print media.. But the government too.. Who use it to gather ideas an disseminate information.. Who ever uses it can filter n choose what he wants to see! We have the knowledge of hood and evil.. Its a thing of choice here!
