  1. I am sorry but there is no excuse for what these doctors have done. No excuse whatsoever. You mean they will stay home this Christmas season eating rice happily ?... Unbelievable , a noble profession being turned into rubbish. Come and try that in a developed country and see how you will immediately get struck off the medial practice .... Rubbish... There should have at least been a skeletal service with maybe 60% of doctors still working. In fact I am short of words

    1. I completely agree with you. I don't understand why Doctors will embark on this.
Doctors on strike, it doesn't even sound right almost like saying journalists are on strike. Its inane

    2. First I must warn Linda not to eat dis comment as she always does to me. Second, Anon 5:38, I want to answer u plainly and truthfully. Some of the doctors can't actually afford a feast of rice and goat meat and chicken and wine as u ignorantly think, some of them are also sick, yes sick with worry of January school fees, what a consultant earns here is what a ward nursing assistant earns in ur so called developed world yet they are not as diligent as ours, even in private hospitals! It is not asking for too much when one works and asks for a decent piece of meal. I am a Nigerian woman, living in ur so called developed world and married to a medical doctor, I have my fair share of testing of both waters and I tell u honestly, you are attacking the wrong person! Talk to ur Govt. Not the doctors, they too are 'sick' and needs govt healing

    3. A developed country will not watch its health sector degenerate, its doctors underpaid and overworked, and its leaders running abroad to treat hiccups.when the life of Nigerians are worthless to the Government and you expect Doctors to work "miracles" despite the gross negligence.Anyway Myopic Imbecile and drop-outs like you don't know doctors are humans too.

    7. Before you type stuff or open your mouth to say things, make enquiries, research, don't be so narrow minded and limit yourself to LIB. Find out why Drs are on strike. It's not for increment, it's being sidelined by the government while other civil servants are favored. I won't go into detail cos you have a brain, fingers and eyes and can check it up on Google. And FYI the oath we took which was declared by Hippocrates, the father of Medicine was made with the condition that the society would give him his due and good things of life, again Google it and educate yourself. Imagine a Dr not being paid his salary for 3 mths and being the sole provider in his home, using his car to transport passengers for money. Where in any developed country do you see that? Like I said, I won't go into details with examples, just take a day off and spend it in a teaching hospital then you'll not only ask Drs to strike, you'll beg them to protest for the inhumane conditions they are subjected to. Cheers

    9. In developed countries, doctors, nurses, fire fighters, police men n women, emergency services are classified as 'essential services', so dey can NEVER go on strike...at least here in canada...having said that, they are well paid and treated with the highest level of respect and dignity...so much so that pple dream of becoming policemen n fire fighters...they save pples lives, u can bring a dead man back to life..even as d govt consider the doctor's families, Doctors shld consider another line of action...like someone suggested skeletal service but not all going on strike....

    15. Anon 7.36 mrs married to a doctor, anon 10.39 miss people should go to private hospitals, anon 7.40 miss or mr imbecile and drop out... You lot need to get your thinking changed big time. First if all I reject all your insults and they have bounced back to you all a hundred fold. I do not use foul language no matter what. That would be too low. Secondly I said there should be a skeletal service in place for emergencies. Would you all rather have people die like chickens? How sad you all are. Not everyone can afford private care and private care is not usually the best anyways. You just do not bring to halt services for the masses and the poor and have them die just like that. And for your information, I lost my dearest relative in one of these government hospitals, we knew he may die however if the so called doctors even put a smile on their faces and showed abit of concern not wanting to get 2000 naira of us, it would have helped relieve the pain abit. A consultant even dropped someone's case notes and walked off with the student doctors after seeing another patient. I had to go and pick the notes and rush over to them. You should have seen the look the consultant gave me.... Meanwhile the student doctors were texting.... They are not all bad but long and short of it is you took an oat to care. I pray the govt pay you your dues. And I pray you change you attitudes towards humans.

    16. Mcheww... If you haven't spent 6 years of your life in medical school (minus assu strike o) only to graduate and be underpaid by the government then don't talk abegi. Sometimes doctors even use their cars and money to support and help patients themselves while they have families to feed at home.. Its bad enough that they come home late at night and barely have any family time, now they're not even getting paid for it on top. You don't understand what doctors go through here in Nigeria, to watch your patients die not because they can't be saved but cos you don't have any means or facilities to save them. and concerning the 2000naira matter its a govt hospital not a charity organization, if you treat a patient without billing them the money goes out of your already menial salary, and considering the rate of poverty in Nigeria ..imagine giving out 2000 naira to about 50 patients a. Month, how would you live? . You don't understand what doctors realy go tru, u can only sit behind your laptop and comment, I've lived with a doctor for 17 years so I know what it is they're fighting for..but even upon this strike patients come to our house and still he consults and prescribes drugs for them for free. Some doctors are still on call for emergency cases sef..abeggi just chill if you dunno what to say.. You're attacking the wrong ppl, face your government!

No developed country would pay or treat their Drs for the sacrifices they make like this country does. In Nigeria, Drs don't have a life in teaching hospitals so don't make statements you know nothing about.

People of Nigeria.. instead of you to go cry to the government to give this people what they deserve, you're abusing the poor doctors that have suffered blood and sacrificed their whole youth!!! this is the problem with nigeria. If it is that easy, and it's all about an oath.. You should all go back and become doctors then.

and the stupid people saying the oath to save lives at all cost. which oath are you talking about.

    This is the Oath!!!
To consider dear to me, as my parents, him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and, if necessary, to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art; and that by my teaching, I will impart a knowledge of this art to my own sons, and to my teacher's sons, and to disciples bound by an indenture and oath according to the medical laws, and no others.

I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.

But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.

I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.

In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing and all seduction and especially from the pleasures of love with women or men, be they free or slaves.

All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal.

If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practise my art, respected by all humanity and in all times; but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my life.

  34. In most developed countries doctors are not permitted to go on strike however they are at least paid. God help naija, only in Nigeria will doctors be expected to work with no pay while the politicians engorge themselves with nigeria's money. They can't be bothered to implement a health care service that benefits the masses and actually exists. But instead the facilities are poor in government hospitals, doctors expected to work in such depleted circumstances. No wonder doctors are fed up and striking.

  40. The major reason why the doctors are on strike selfish and out of jealousy of other medical workers. Imagine going on strike because the national industrial court ruled that other health workers should continue skipping from step 10 to step 12. That is why they are on strike, for the NIC to reverse the judgement as if it affects them in any way. This is pure jealousy strike! Ask them what they are agitating for? Its not as if poor funding of the health sector affects them alone. It affects everybody in the medical team, from the nurses down to the othe team members, yet they are still working especially this xmas period.when others went on strike, they called them names and urged their members to remain on duty when they knew well they could not do a thing in the hospital. Now the table has turned and they want public sympathy by posting pictures here and there. Please, other health care teams are working including the consultants, so the effect is not greatly felt, only the work load has increased for others.

They want people to feel the effect by going on strike yuletide period and immediately after ASUU called off theirs, and this is a pure sign of wickedness. This strike is not about salary! as somebody said the can't work without payment. Ask them what it is all about and you all will be surprised. The leadership of NMA have lost focus and everything is now about politics. Most doctors don't even know the reason for the strike and some who know are disappointed. When JOHESU went on strike, they directed only their members in federal hosps to reduce the hardship on the masses but this NMA directed both federal and state hospitals which is babaric. Though the FG is not serious about the health sector, but the individuals should do their own part first. This is really pathetic. NMA is seriously loosing public sympathy and it is really a shame

  57. This regime has recorded an unprecedented number of strike actions by several union bodies. When the issues come up, we usually find out that the government did not live up to an earlier agreed deal. This government is insincere and I guess these guys know that so l kinda don't blame them but I think emergency services should still go on.

  59. Anon 6.39 u are ignorant, only if u have the faintest idea of what it takes to be a doctor and all the years of training that goes into making one,yes they've got to be proud cos it ain't easy and they are worth their salt a lot of trash is happening in the health sector that they've continually complained about but the government has continually ignored them remember this strike has been postponed on two occasions all out of the good will of nigerian doctors who are receiving meagre sums of money for the services they render.u obviously desperately wanted to be a doctor but circumstances probably prevented u that is not an excuse for castigating such a humble and respected profession.let's pray the federal government does something concrete about this problem in order to forestall future occurrence which will have far reaching and damning effect for the poor masses

  63. God Bless you Meandoc and Anon 7:21 . People think they know what goes on in the Doctor's life, but they have no clue. Sad really if the people of this country are talking about doctors like this, how would the govt listen to them. Smh. Anyway since strike is the only langage the Government understands , then strike it is .

  64. The elephant in the room is the jumbo pay of the NASS members. ASUU was the beginning. Every sector wants their share of the national booty. Took them this long to figure out.
The docs were just waiting to see how successful ASUU will be.
Until we put the legislators salary on the table, this will continue.

  66. The problem wit Nigeria is not all abt d leaders but also the people being led.Has any of u bothered to find out d reason for d doctor's strike?do u guys even care abt wat it's abt?.With ignorance pple like anon no 1 ll wake up n utter crap cos of ignorance. So cos docs took oath their families shud die of poverty?.u cannot compare the salaries of docs in Naija to dat of other docs in other parts of Africa not to talk of abroad. How can docs be paid hazard fee of 5k n lecturers hazard fee of 30k?wat hazards do lecturers face? R dey exposed to d communicable dxs we see everyday? R dey exposed to HIV or hepatitis?r dey exposed to pxs wit Open Tb etc. U all shud sit down n really find out wat d strike is all about b4 u cast stones.do u know for how long dey have been negotiating wit d govt but to no avail?Ignorance is no excuse to insult pple.also docs don't claim to know it all which is why medicine is a continous process.after 6+n yrs in med school,u do housejob or internship,NYSC n bak to residency program which is another 6yrs.pls know d true facts b4 u utter nonsence all cos u have freedom of speech

  67. Linda Ikeji, I believe wat u shud do is to find out d reason for d strike cos it seems u r also criticising d docs.not everyone can afford private hospitals like u.

  68. Why the strike at this period? Hen... Who are those using government hospital?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Linda I guess my response to anon 1 didn't get verified but I will write again despite my old resolve not to comment again here.

U see, it's only lack of knowledge that will make one keep comparing urself with others when u haven't tested their own waters. Igbos avers that "onye ruo ukwu akwu, o mara ihe ichara". Medical practice else where isn't better than in Nigeria! The Nigerian doctor strive to use d almost non existing resources to treat but d other countries being cited are provided for till their teeth drops yet they are lazy! A consultant in Nigeria receives same salary with a ward assisting nurse in Europe or US. Y won't dey go on strike when most if them are worried sick of how to meet January school fees payment for their kids? Nigerians, Doctors are sick too! Plz talk to ur leaders not the doctors.

  73. This Strike is because they dont want Lab Scientists, Nurses and other allied health fields to be directors in their own field!. this is just self serving...i wonder why this govt still condones a group of proud folks on an ego trip to hold the health of this country to ransome. its sad.!!!. an oath was taken by these mfs to save lives first. all they care abt is their pockects and egos. if they feel they are not well compensated... they should go to some other place andd get better compensation... why would a doctor fight others that work with him for the benefit of the patient?. why!!!. every little thing, they want to strike...and yet they have private clinics thaat corner these same pple that govt hospitals have forcefully discharged!. too bad. i pray for the sick to be healed!,. Amen!

  74. It's funny that a lot of people think the doctors are the bad ones here, whereas, if you have been to a hospital where because of ONLY ''your'' relative, the doctor would not sleep throughout the night, you will understand their plight, they work around dangerous equipments dealing with diseases you and I have only heard of..... Please cut them some slack, let them fight for better work and living standards.
