Obasanjo blasts Vanguard over daughter's open letter

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has reacted in very strong terms over the 11-page letter purportedly written by his daughter Iyabo Obasanjo and exclusively published by Vanguard yesterday where he was described as a liar, manipulator and a woman beater.

A call was put through to the former president yesterday by the editors of Vanguard to hear his side of the allegations leveled against him by his daughter and the conversation went thus:

Vanguard: Sir, we tried reaching you all through yesterday, to no avail, over the letter written by your daughter, Iyabo, to you.

Chief Obasanjo: You are a bloody idiot, you have published the paper and you are now looking for me, you are an idiot, don’t call me again. When Iyabo finishes you in court…. (hangs up).

Meanwhile it seems Iyabo Obasanjo really wrote that letter. Continue...

From Vanguard
Following the hoopla over her letter, Iyabo spoke severally to Vanguard, yesterday. Asked to respond to claims that she had denied the authorship of the letter written to her father, Iyabo, who holds a doctorate in epidemology and now resident in the United States, said:

“No, no, no, that is not true. How can you live by social media? That is part of the problem with Nigeria, people want to be flying rumours. I have not told anybody o! It is early morning here and I just woke up and if I were you I would just ignore them,” Senator Obasanjo said.

“People are calling me and telling me that they called Baba but if I say I am not talking to someone (her father), how can you say you called the person and the person will tell you what is on my mind?” she asked.

Giving reasons on why she broke off, she said that after a break from relating with Obasanjo, she found out days ago that her father would not change from the manipulative person she had known all along.

“The whole of last year I didn’t speak to him and I just started speaking to him recently, and the last time he was trying to manipulate me to say, this, say that. I can’t be saying no when you say no.

“The last time I spoke to him was three days ago and I decided that I was not going to speak to him again after that. That was the communication through which I realized that this man would never change from manipulations for himself.”

Dismissing her unsolicited canvassers on social media, she said:
“I was surprised that they would say that they called Baba, and I said to myself, are these people mad? How can you call the person that I said I am not talking to, to ask him whether I wrote a letter or not and he is going to speak for me?

“Nobody can say that I told him that I didn’t write it. I am not a liar. I will not back away from what I wrote and there is nothing that is there that is a lie. In the last four years how many of them have spoken to me? They are all mad people,” she said.

  46. To be Honest, I doubt Vanguard can publish such a letter against OBJ if it's not true. Considering the background of Vanguard (South-West) Newspaper and the Courageous way they have continued to defend this story, It's likely to be TRUE. We all know OBJ is NOT a Saint, even though APC remains supportive of him. There are some contents in the letter that need to be addressed especially Corruption, but don't forget GEJ is/was a product of OBJ. I guess he's annoyed because he no longer controls and dictate to GEJ. GEJ on his own part has refused to respond, thereby further annoying OBJ. Why is OBJ ranting over his daughter's 12-page letter when he wrote an 18-page letter to GEJ?...

While she was in power in Nigeria what did she do other than to steal money meant for the good of all. And she has mouth to still be talking, she should be ashamed and be hiding herself in a hole where ever she is, this is the problem with Nigeria given credence and voice to thieves. Rotimi Ameachi was right, until we start stoning those political thieves in NIgeria they will continue to steal. @Vanguard you shouldn't be giving any attention to Iyabo, responsible journalism, which is mainly lacked in Nigeria, entails not giving voice to political thieves.

  110. Baba has never been a saint - Nobody is outta them all and she can't be crucified for the outburst. Buh no matter the tides, fathers still deserve some level of respect from their wards. We have fathers who are even worse off and not all take to the media. No matter how bad he is, she can't deny the fact that she has also benefited 'directly/indirectly' from her father in terms of his wealth, image or identity. Even bearing that name till now proves that point! Well, this is politics so anything/everything is possible.....I hope she will turnout better for her own progenies

    My apologies to OBJ

  113. Well... If Iyabo is right or wrong about her Dad inhumane behaviours is non of we Nigerians problem. I would rather suggested for her to address her grievances separately and let us address the problem that threatening our existence as a country. I wish to know how much GEJ or anybody behind this will pay her for such letter. For humanly sake why should now be time for her to start saying all these rubish? I read the letter and the first 2 sentences is enough for her to send the real message if indeed She believes her Dad shouldn't have written such letter to a serving president not to now start enumerating her family issues and her father beast nature for us all. Please Lindodo, We don't need anyone to fool us. Baba's letter is an eye opener, I believe an average reasonable Nigerian should disregard the Author of the letter to GEJ but should look into the content of the letter. Let GEJ pls respond to the letter himself and clear himself of all the allegations level against him, we are not ready to be diverted by one angry daughter of a failed father. That is their family problem... I submit

  117. Who are the fools that hide under the anonymous to insult people on social media for heaven sake. Everybody is entitle to his or her opinion and comment to all issues on discussion. So far nobody insult you as a person or attack you I see no reason why any bastard anonymous should insult or attack others. This is a social media for God sake it is not a must for you to read all post and comment to all post. Please if you go school or get PHD from toronto it is for your family and not for you to ask anyone whether he go school or not. Try and get life too for you not to insult anyone via a social media. Please Linda always try and screen people with moronic comment.

  118. It's obvious the letter wasn't a lie. Too much personal verifiable details to ignore. It comes down to Iyabo being dissatisfied (truth be said after to some extent riding on the name of Obasanjo for political rise in Nigeria--her sterling qualifications notwithstanding) with Obasanjo's neglect of her mother her mother's children, physical abuse of the mother, and choosing Stella over her mother. Every other thing Obasanjo did or did not do for her stems from those deep-seated and unaddressed hurt.

  120. Linda, Nigerians especially of Yoruba origin have very short memories. They seem flustered that Iyabo could write such letter to her father. Think back. Some years ago Gbenga, Obasanjo's son accused his father of sleeping with his (Gbenga's) wife. Can you beat that? As for Anne Marie who doesn't know why Obasanjo wrote the letter to President Jonathan, read today's (19/12/2013)SUN at page 60 THE TURFGAME by Ego-Allowes.

  121. @anon 11:19 what do u mean by yorubas r not like igbos dat abuse dier elders.av u not hrd d statement "respect begets respect" if u want 2 be respected u av 2 respect others too. there's no sentiments bout dat.Nigerians r just too sentimental in making decisions datz y everything is going wrong. Do u think being a Father is just bout gettin a woman pregnant???dia's so much more to being a Father and obviously Obj was not her Father n she has done nutin wrong by speaking up cos he never played d role of a father. She wrote dat letter, vanguard is not a newspaper dat carries false news and i strongly beliv Iyabo wrote the letter. It baffles me dat Nigerians somehow find a way 2 bring tribal sentiments into every issue.
