Locals seem to be targeting Nigerians in India for no good reason. On October 30, a 37 year old man Obado Uzoma Simeon was murdered in Parra village, North Goa, India. Aside from Uzoma, several other Nigerians have been harassed, assaulted and beaten by the locals and Indian police isn't doing anything about the targeted violence. Locals claim the Nigerians being targeted are drug dealers.
Angry Nigerians staged a protest in India last week over Uzoma's killing. They attacked the police vehicle carrying his body,
removed the body from the van and kept it on the road, blocking traffic
in the area (pic above ). The protest led to the arrest of several Nigerians who have since been released.
Nigerians in India have been complaining bitterly about how the locals are maltreating them. And there's actually a directive from Goa's Chief Minister to police to track down
Nigerians living illegally in the state and deport them. A few days after the protest, a minister in the state added fuel to the fire by refering to Nigerians as cancer.

ReplyDeleteVery Sad indeed but as a Nigerian, very angry that our country people are being mal-treated. I have lived in many countries and understand human rights. If you live abroad, or those enlightened ones living in Nigeria, we are seeing that Nigerians abroad have become "A Race with No Voice!"
ReplyDeleteNigeria "bashing" has become an international free-for-all sport! Nigeria has become a punch-bag that any country in the world can punch without expecting a consequence. Very sad indeed. There are bad people everywhere and in all nations, UK, USA, Mexico, Brazil etc. even in India where Indians commit atrocities but where we as Nigerians think that these beatings and killings of our people abroad is "OK" or "justified" for whatever reason, is a disgrace. That the solution is that they should come home is simple thinking indeed. We cannot even support ourselves abroad? Even if brother and sister fight for house, when they reach outside, they present a united front against the outside world. That is how it should be.
Yet I am disgusted by comments here supporting these actions against our citizens abroad.
If it were your brothers, would these actions be OK? Some of you have never lived where the racism is so thick that you can cut it with a knife. That the mere mention of "I am a Nigerian" puts you at an automatic disadvantage. It's not right and I cannot accept it.
You ask what Nigerians are doing there? Then What r Indians doing in Nigeria? All the ones here, r they all perfect? In fact I could ask also, "What r u doing outside your villiage or state?"
All you that can only think in terms of your own limitations and thinking in the level of a puddle when there is an ocean of thoughts, perceptions, human rights, thinking this treatment of our people abroad is justified, then shame on you. I love my people, warts and all. We have good and we have bad. Same in other countries but they cannot try this treatment with many nationalities. Their Prime Minister or President, their embassies will get involved.

ReplyDeleteso i had a good source translate this for me and apparently, the indian man with the white shirt that was telling the story said that the nigerian man on his bike was a terrorist and was planning to blow up some place. so u know how indian people are now (from films) they take action into their hands. so they started beating the dude. and thats why he was shouting (the indian) that why did the police come and arrest the nigerian guy, that the crowd had it under control and that they were already handling the nigerian well (i.e. beating him).

ReplyDeleteI went to India on a Children's charity mission from the UK. Our group was made up of both black and white people. The hotel we booked was suddenly FULL when we arrived and they saw there were black people in the group. They did not care whether we were Nigerians, Kenyans, Zambians. It was about the colour of our skin. Period!!!

Nigerians are highest population of foreign prisoners in South East Asia. Since we commit these crimes and make ourselves nuisances all around the world we lack the moral high ground to complain.
Just my two cents.
India of all places, some naijans don't have shame at all. I guess illiteracy is the cause otherwise they would know the naija is still better economically than India.

ReplyDeleteI went on official assignment to India sometime this year. ...stayed for 3 months and hated almost every second of it. Indians are racists. ....the men look at you in a weird disturbing way. Me I was moving around in my chauffeur driven car so I had minimal interaction with any male. Suffice to say am never going back there official assignment or not.

We have a wretched mentality that's why we treated this way in other countries. the government of Nigeria has enough money to make Nigeria look like UK but noo...its for one person therefore this madness!!!
