Graphic pics: 28 killed, 200 wounded in Anambra church stampede

About 28 people lost their lives today Nov 2nd during a stampede at the Holy Ghost Adoration Ground, Uke, Idemili North LGA of Anambra State (The Adoration ground after the stampede above

Punch reports
More than 100,000 people were said to be gathered at the venue of the incident, with facilities that can hardly take 5,000 people, when the stampede occurred. The tragic incident has already become political, as the camps of Governor Peter Obi and Senator Chris Ngige are trading blame over the incident.
About 200 victims that survived the stampede were taken hospitals in Onitsha and Nkpor where a lot of them were treated and discharged.

The incident occurred shortly after Governor Peter Obi, the governorship candidate for the All progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Willie Obiano; and the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, among others left the place after an all-night church programme.

Obi, who later on visited hospitals, where the survivors of the stampede were being attended to, promised to set up a panel to investigate the cause of the stampede.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka , confirmed the incident but said he could not give figures or state the cause of the incident because investigations were still going on to establish the cause of the incident.

The Founder and Spiritual Director of the Holy Ghost Adoration Centre, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obinma, a Catholic priest popularly called Ebube Mmuonso (the glory of the Holy Ghost), also went round to see and pray for the survivors.

He, however, said he was still too shocked to comment on the incident.

  37. How on earth would 100,000 people cluster in a space that is meant for 5,000 persons. Nigerians should be very careful the way the conduct their daily lives these days. For the days are evil. Being poor & religious should not becloud our sense of reasoning & judgement. There are bunch of evil men & women who are bent on diabolically & maliciously manipulating the poor & uninformed in order to achieve their devilish & selfish goals. These satanic individuals are both in the political and religious circle. We should beware of not only our politicians but also our so called "religious icons". The painful thing is, the biting socio- economic hardship in Nigeria has made so many to lose their minds in their desperate search for immediate solutions to their problems. This is quite pathetic...!

  91. BROADCAST OF HIS EXCELLENCY, MR. PETER OBI GOVERNOR OF ANAMBRA STATE ON THE UKE STAMPEDE. AWKA NOV. 3RD, 2013

November 3, 2013 Politics No comments

    Gov. Peter Obi
    My Dear Ndi Anambra,

With a deep sense of sorrow and sadness, I address you today on the tragedy which befell us yesterday at the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, Idemmili North Local Government Area of Anambra State leading to the death of over twenty persons.

My heart goes out to the immediate families of the deceased, the presiding Priest, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obinma, the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha and indeed all Anambrarians. I assure you that the Anambra State Government in its usual manner, will give you all the needed support to comfort you at this painful period.

It is, however, necessary to state what happened at the vigil at Uke. The host of the Ministry, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obinma had personally delivered a written invitation to me, requesting that I attend the All Saints night prayers (November 1, 2013 being All Saints Day)

In my characteristic manner, I honoured that invitation, arriving the venue at about 10:00pm when the mass started with no more than 10 persons including my elder sister, Rev. Sr. Martina Obi, the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh and others as well as less than half of my security details.

It is worth-mentioning that when I was called upon by the Priest to speak as the Governor of the State at about 12 midnight when the mass ended, a group of people located in three different spots started chanting Ngige slogans and waving the brooms of All Progressives Congress (APC) and the pictures of Dr. Chris Ngige, the APC’s flag bearer in the November 16 Governorship election. It took up to 20 minutes for the priest to calm them down.

I was surprised that some people would turn a prayer ground into a campaign venue.

In my remarks, which lasted no more than five minutes, I promised to sponsor twenty indigent people from among the faithful on pilgrimage, provide access road to the premises and urged all present to pray for Anambra State and Nigeria.

The Presiding priest and all present can testify to this, and it is on tape.

I left the Adoration premises at about 3:00am on Saturday with the persons who came with me and arrived my Lodge at 3:30am only to be told after my broadcast, later in the morning where I renamed the Anambra State University (ANSU) to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University that a stampede occurred at the place where I had left three hours previously. I quickly cancelled all my engagements on Saturday and Sunday and started visiting relevant places to get first-hand information on the tragedy.

I appeal to the good people of our dear State to remain calm and prayerful as God who has been with us all this while, will help us to overcome the present sad development so that we can continue the task of turning around our State.

I have directed all security agencies to do everything possible to unearth the cause of this mayhem. A Panel of inquiry will soon be constituted to investigate what happened. Finally, I have declared three days of mourning starting from yesterday in honour of our departed ones. May their souls rest in peace!

Thank you and God bless you!

  110. all you idiots blaming the church or the people going to church shouls just shut up......is this the first time people are gathering for church programme? some things just need common sense and no matter how much you pray if people still do the wrong things and pepetrate evil incidents like this must always happen....something must have happened to cause people to start running helter skelter without focus....we should always learn to be calm and do the right things at all times...
