If you're looking to feature in a movie, all you need to do is pay a fee, no audition is required. For minor roles, these producers demand anything from N50k to N100k...it all depends on the role they are giving you. If you want to play a lead role it's between N500k to N1million. Waka pass people are even made to pay.
The trick some of these producers use is this; they say they are not making money from these movies because people aren't buying them so can't invest all their money in it. They also say finding financiers to pay for the production of a movie is hard, so for these movies to see the light of day, every cast member has to contribute. Thing is, many are eager to pay. Several people told me that it's the girls they refer to as 'runz girls' looking for popularity that started this trend. They would offer movie producers money to feature in their movie so they can refer to themselves as actresses and now it's become a part of Nollywood.
But let me state here that there are some movie producers who don't do this...not all of them demand for money. But a lot of them do. Is that OK? What's your thought on this new trend?
am not surprised... i think am first to comment......hehehe
ReplyDeleteNot surprised either.
DeleteEverything and Anything's possible in Nigeria!
Only in Naija
Deleteu even pay to work in police and other govt parastatals and agencies. nothing is new
ReplyDeleteSo this happens in Nollywood and no one cares to let me know about it? RITA DOMINIC

ReplyDelete''WaKa pass'' Linda you are so ras:)
ReplyDeleteThis is bullshit! Everything that has to do with naija always had k-leg.
ReplyDeleteRubbish producer is supposed to pay not the other way round.
ReplyDeleteMiley Cyrus smokes marijuana on-stage to accept her EMA God help her
Nawaoo this is ridiculous.
ReplyDelete1million to feature in a movie, why not open a shop with the money.
Even the stars u trying to be like, still bleach to stay in business.
~BONARIO~says so via NOKIA3310
E.g Mimi Ojiekwe,Ani anitsaro, but some stand on their grounds and refuse, when you know you can act it's only time, but one can be a star, most upcomers still take their money, its people like Ani, that one that follows Mercy Johnson,so talentless and Mimi they started that rubbish, but not all upcomers are like that, the desperate and talentless ones do that
DeleteLMAO! Bonario of life you nor go kill person, u havnt still changed man... how Abj na? And ya ppl?
DeleteRight from d onset of dis nollywood tin,,actresses pay d directors in-kind#### M not surprised dat it has graduated from kind to cash****But dis is indeed funny!!! I can't even waste my moni buying naija movies,, I rada tear d moni nd dispose****mmmmttttttccccchhhhheeewwwww
ReplyDeleteMy dear, funny indeed. Buh it's true sha. That's the country we living in
DeleteYou are so right. It used to be in kind not cash, n I am talking about those big names out there right now who've bn in d scene for 10, 15+yrs. This trend discouraged me many yrs ago wen I was interested in nollywood/acting.
DeleteKukuma sef, naija is a country where job seekers pay to be employed into the govt sector, so actors/actresses paying to be featured in most of those quack movies shouldn't be shocking, Linda.
This is absolutely wrong....it shouldn't be done that way,,we have so many talented individuals who can do very well in the industry,,why not give them a chance??na wa o...
ReplyDeleteA lot of sharp practices have permeated Nollywood.
ReplyDeleteMovie producers do not only ask for cash from these aspiring, but relatively unknown actors and actresses. Some producers also exploit their desperation and vulnerability by demanding for sex as well.
It's really up to the exploited to stop the exploitation but alas, in Nigeria where everyone wants to be celebrated at all cost, many of these actors and actresses are as guilty as the movie producers.
See how they are messing dis country up in their own little way, tomorrow they will say Goodluck did dis d goveernment did dat, just imagine!
DeleteWell, I knew about this some two years ago, as I have been doing mini pageants...an actor cum producer I met during one of the beauty pageant camps approached me, telling me he thinks I have a talent in Acting, and he could help me get into the movie industry...I was interested and thought it was as easy as it sounded. Then he scheduled a meeting for me and him after the pageant show.
ReplyDeleteI was confused when he sent me the hotel address, I didn't understand why such discussion should be done in a hotel room but I decided to play mature even though I was really nervous.
On getting to the room, the young man went straight to the point and told me that I will have to sleep with him there and then, if I really wanted to get into the industry. When I refused, he asked me to pay 200k and he will pass me at the audition and I said I could not afford it.
He walked me out of the room saying I wasn't serious.....he insulted me all he wanted and even mentioned names of certain actresses whom he helped to get their first movie role in Nollywood, and he said I was too naive.....ever since then I have gotten other offers ranging from 300k to 500k at some point, my mom offered to pay the 300k for me to feature in a movie with top actors, but I told her not to bother. If I am meant to act, I want to merit the role and not through other means.
My dear, just keep ur head straight up, u'll surely succeed, like d saying goes "ill gotten wealth will surely diminish" u'll outshine dem all when ur time comes.
DeleteAww stories dat touch d heart ( -̩̩̩͡˛ -̩̩̩͡ ) ....sorry sis +cool story
DeleteWow! Really good of you to shed more light on the situation. Wish nollywood could be half as good as our music industry. Although both sectors need to be reassessed
DeleteHmmm, nawa o,is it desmond, ramsey, jim iyke? Spill biko!
DeleteBut who exactly asked for this long story?
DeleteNo be naija we dey again... I am so not surprised at this story... Its just a pity sha
ReplyDeleteU ar right Lindodo. Many of dem ask for donations
ReplyDeleteIf only they were paying such amounts to star in big studio, chart busting movies.
ReplyDeleteWhy would anyone pay a mediocre director/producer to star in a mediocre movie?
Its funny how we scream at the peak of our voices about the corruption of our leaders when we aren't any better ourselves.
Mediocre peoole engage in mediocre things
DeleteYou've made all the sense
DeleteIts not a new trend, its being happening since and sometimes they have to pay in kind...Leumas

ReplyDeleteLinda, it's true o, when i was still job hunting, i went for an audition, i was told that we have to register under the company's name with 15k, some of the girls were not even bothered about the amount. since then i stopped going for auditions.
Very typical! Who even still watch nollywood movies sef?pay my own money to feature in wack movies?i need to b high on grass sef!

ReplyDeletethe awkward moment when sex for roles isnt enough...guess the ASUU strike issue has made the industry saturated with actors....
ReplyDeleteInteresting situation
Lindz, so I heard. A close frnd who's a 2:1 graduate of theatre arts frm d no1 uni in Nigeria paid 60bucks 2play an assistant in a movie! In fact, most of dem (ladies) cud pay in kind also wen u cnt raise d amt... Smh!
ReplyDeleteWhat's d point anyways??? Gud point Bonario BTW. And aft paying all dt, who'd notice dem???
See Nigeria And Die!!!!!
~D great anonymous!
The desperate and cheap local celeb girls shud be held responsible for this. As for the producers! They are bizness men like every other person. Zion.
ReplyDeleteYes I know and strongly believe they do cause I am speaking out of experience I am a good actress any time I go for auditions I am always short listed bu d movie producers end up asking me for money or asking me to meet them in some hotel for more discussion so they can explain tins I haven't been able to future in any good movie and even the ones I have done I haven't gotten the role I deserve in any of them plus I have never been paid a dime for any even the one's dey air on tv
ReplyDeleteIt's a pity! But come to think of it, is it not the same everywhere? Other ministries equally demand money for job-seekers before they re given jobs. I ve heard cases of people paying 200k and above just to secure a job even with first class certificate......So why won't the directors or whatever join in d corruption....Only prayers will save this nation.
ReplyDeleteChelsea Eze that featured in Two brides and a baby paid to get featured in that movie and the few ones she has featured in.
ReplyDeleteLinda na true u tok, all dis cumin up Actors/Actresses dey pay producers to feature in movie, and sum producers no dey pay the up comin ones, dem go simple tell them say 'make dem dey appear/feature for free until they are well known' . Producers they tell all dis cumin stars say na from there dem go begin shine well wella and na dat tym dem fit demand for payment.

ReplyDeleteThis isnt news tho..its not only in nollywood. in the music industry as well. its a nigerian thing.. #sad
ReplyDeleteLol, so linda ur just knowing. That's Nigeria for you and I know a number of them sef, they are runz girls and cos they want to be accorded a good name in the society so at least when they get popular with all the fine clothes and vacation pictures, and you start wondering, that can always justify it by the word 'actress'. Thank me later
ReplyDeleteLol, linda u ain't dat current....well it's been happening for a long time, I have a friend who pays 100k just to be in a movie pple don't watch.
ReplyDeletehmm ooo God help us
ReplyDeleteIf musicians are paid to feature in upcoming stars album, why not the movie producers!!! I think it a cool idea. You want popularity, he wants money. Thats really smart business.
ReplyDeleteMay God c us tru in dis country
ReplyDeleteThis is Ridiculous! What kinda nonsense is that!?
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of sense in this...if they pay its just like making an investment cos when they feature they get to know the big gigs and get paid more for the runz shii...look at the recent kinda girls in nollywood now...thier costume etc...infact how many movie rukky sanders don do see as the babe dey ball...if they like make dem deny na thier headache
ReplyDeleteCwÉ‘̣̣̝̇̇zyyyyyy
ReplyDeleteThis is what the Nigerian movie industry has degenerated into, and they say they want to improve the quality of nollywood movies which is mostly as crap as the word crap.
ReplyDeleteUntil strict professionalism is adopted, ghallywood will soon overtake us. God help Nigeria.
This is a true tok I am a witness to this.
ReplyDeletewww.juicygist.com for crazy mad hot gist
Totally cool business. Better money than sex. When they get the fame from the movie, the money becomes a means to an end.
ReplyDeleteYea is tru.. my gf do pay 20k 4 her pix 2 b in d poster.datz 2 bad u kw.
ReplyDeleteNa today, every movie industry has been doing this for centuries, hollywood, bollywood. Face fact, the world of entertainment is a very tough one, those who are willing to play should be ready for anything.
ReplyDeleteMy dear seriously they do oh!! I am an up coming actress and I go for Auditions and I see all this things,so where is my hope? Am even a theatre art student oh! But still no hope for me because I need to pay or sleep with a stupid director for a role *smh* but thank God for the good once like ... Well, let me just don't menstion names..
ReplyDeleteIts very okay. There's always a prize to pay & since this tanlentless runs gurls hve decided to add d acting profile to their bio I think its fair they pay for it esp bcuz with them in it d movie can't sell & their bodies do not appeasue the producersthey might as well pay cash. Remb its cash or kind
ReplyDeleteBonario Nnaggs,na wah oooo must you comment on everypost.smh.....y'all should stop complaining about Toke..when BONARIO Is commenting on everypost.

ReplyDeleteAll the unknown faces you see acting big roles actually paid for production of the films themselves.... especially those aristo looking girls and yahoo looking boys
But y wud anyone pay moni 2 feature in some half-baked crap that some joker producer puts up as a movie? Anyway,it's only talentless peeps dt cud b so desperate. Dey shd wait till i hit Nollywood.

ReplyDeleteno be today the thing start
ReplyDeleteLinda, this is so true. It happening in the English and Yoruba sectors. Even our so-called stars have done it before and some still pay producers to feature in big productions.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why i'm not perturbed by this. Anyway, nothing surprises me anymore in this country.
ReplyDelete~AKWA IBOM'S FINEST~

Oh please, what's all this fuzz about? That's hardly news. Beside it takes money to make money, its a win-win for both parties (I.e producers and actors). At the end of the day everyone is happy!
ReplyDeleteAm sure you Ard one of the miserable local producer that does that, are you sure you are not Okwy
DeleteU r very very stupid @anony 1:43pm. Am sure u r 1 of dose old cargos/fools dat do colect moni 4rm dem.

You pay for jobs, u pay for fame, yoy pay for roads, u pay for everything. The annoying part of this kind of thing is people will keep paying. Smh.

ReplyDeleteNo be Niger we dey they can do undo to make money. i no doubt oooooooooooooo
ReplyDeleteMimi Ojiekwe is an actress that does that, that is why she can't act or be in good movies
ReplyDeletemy people everything doesn't have to be tainted with corruption, there are still things called hard work and reaping what you sow
ReplyDeleteLove from Miami
It's only desperate actresses that do that, one of the people that started UT is Mimi Ojiekwe,Ani Anitmasoro, whatever her name is,they can't even act, Linda many Upcomers are being paid, its just the desperate ones like the names I wrote, theu are the ones that pay,Imagine Mimi pays Producers and Directors and she cannot act in any way
ReplyDeleteHaba Linda! This not a new trend Ooº°˚˚°ÂºoO. Some of dem even feature these up-coming actors/actresses without pay.
ReplyDeleteProducer Dr Paul, may God punish you, because you don't like paying your actors, you always want free movies, the owner of Naidoh Films, i dont know of you are a Christian or Muslim, but gear God,he likes using people and won't pay them, and God bless the producers that pay,to an extent this story is true
ReplyDeleteFair Enough, it's bad practice, but truth is we the consumers are not helping matters either. We buy pirated copies of their movies. 20-in-1 for 200naira. Where should they get their ROI?
ReplyDeleteLook right and left Linda, it's the same thing done by our Government, Churches e.t.c., so, technically everybody in position of authority takes undue advantage of the joblessness and poverty level in the Country. You can't blame the victims, cos they see an opportunity to better their lives, but fail to see the extortion.
ReplyDeleteSo why won't they be angry with and bann MercyJ since others pay to get d roles
ReplyDeleteWell, as a producer/director, I took time 2 go through d write up and comments! I'm so professional when it comes to my job! Many upcomngs have approachd me with such but I turned thm dwn. d truth is, u may pay ur way bt if u r not gud u will never get up there. My advice is d upcomings shld stop giving d P/D d chance 2 take advantage of thm tnx
ReplyDeleteLinda it is 'did you know' not 'do you know'
ReplyDeleteIT doesn't make sense. I believe if you are really talented and destined to be there, your gifts will place you, might take some time and hardwork though....
ReplyDeleteLinda All of them are the Same Exept Few, I hav Been in Dis industry As an upcoming for More than a year nw, Acting is something I Really had passion For I would be Proud to say I got the talent, But Wen I Started struggling in the industry I began to Ask myself so many questions, Becos this People Called Producers nd Directors Are Really Frustrating they will want to sleep with u nd at the same time Collect money frm u, at Times they will tell u send Recharge Cards some of them would Even request for sometin they knw u can't Afford, then if u do nt they will start comparing u with others who had made their Ways, My own is dat if They can Put A stop to All This it Would be Better Becos they no Longer see the talent all they see is ur Body or ur money, They will tell u Ur mates Are Sponsoring Movies U are coming Empty Handed, Nd dats nt Fair so I want Anybody Who can help this Situation to do sometin About it Pls, Becos is Really getting Out of Hand Nolly Wood is Somtin Else.
ReplyDeleteThe truth about such artises is that they don't last in that. They use it as a partway in meeting sugar daddies
ReplyDeleteI'll start watching nollywood movies when i start seeing new and good acts.. Instead of the same old boring faces # nt interested#
ReplyDeleteY'all shud pls blv dis, am an actor and dis is authentic, its fuckin true, its a trend nw, ofcos I dnt pay bt I've run in2 dis "producers/directors" lotsa tyms whr I've bn asked to pay a certain fee rangin frm 5k upwards, membership fee of 30k plus, dey call fees lyk dis production fees and to dia defence dey call d movies yu'll fearture in as "Projection movies"; say dey ar tryna project ur face n dey'd start payin yu wen ur demand increases n face is knwn and shii. Nw lemme state it dat only wannabes and desperate ppl wll pay dese shitty fees, dnt be gullible pls. If yu ar truly talented and focused, yu shud get paid for ur work and not pay to work! Its not done anywhr and its a total package of wickedness, evil, greed, slavery, bullshit and arrant nonsense. And to dos who luk dwn on d job actors ar paid to do, its freakin hardwork, its challengin and its a serious business, more serious dan most 8-6 jobs we hav out dere trust me wen I say dis so its no beans! DON'T EVA PAY ANY1 TO ACT! ITS PLAIN STUPID AND DUMB! Dnt let any1 patronise yu wth phrases lyk "no pain no gain", dey dsav a bullet to d head. Am an actor and am gud at wat I do, I get paid for wat I do and I pay my bills for wat I do, can't trade my job/passion/right to live happy for anythin. If yu ar talented, ur talent will pay off one day for yu, be dogged and blv in wat yu stand for and be true to urself, go for auditions, meet ppl who will help yu advance further, dnt pay any fucktard for a movie feature, d forces of nature and attraction wnt evn support success dat way not to even mention supernatural forces, its fraud, no1 makes it big dat way. Again I say "DON'T PAY TO WORK, GET PAID!". #EnuffSaid
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm a Nigerian actress in the US after wasting time looking for roles in Nigerian films here was thinking about coming to Naija like others have to be in Nollywood, but they don't say what they did to be in movies... However, there's nothing new about it. Beverly Naya never hid the fact that her mother paid for her first movie to be made where she played the lead role. Actresses having been sleeping with producers, directors etc for years. Even in Hollywood the proverbial casting couch is very real. Men in power will sample the "goods" first before giving women a shot in music and movies and anywhere else they can. God has been ministering to me about this. Everywhere I turn I see something about this and I'm reading this now on Linda's Blog. Last night I speaking to God about how frustrated I am. I turned to Youtube and watched a Yoruba movie titled Sekowale 1&2 and it was about this same thing. I was afraid of producing, but that's what I have to do to move forward and I will open doors for others like me. It is well. God will bless my efforts. IJN!
ReplyDeleteI thought it's been that way for a long, long time...
ReplyDeleteI suffered same ish, was duped by Earnest Obi, 150k, I didn't even get a chance 2 feature in any movie, till date he gives me stories when I call him...... Hajara

DeleteI thought it's been that way for a long, long time...
ReplyDeleteLet us not only blame dis producers but also dose stupid upcomers who willingly offer deir money in d 1st place..........dats why nollywood wuld grow b'cos of dis bad eggs.
ReplyDeleteLinda do people know you charge between $300 to $500 per post?!!! That should be your next topic.
ReplyDeleteWell, this is bad. It should be the other way around. I hope the relevant authorities are watching.
ReplyDeleteVe never commented on this blog b4 bt 2day i'll.Am an actor and wht linda said is true bt d part of dem payin 1million/500 k is a lie linda.I wnt call names of producers and directors bt their base is FESTAC.They evn go as far as payin 4 poster(70-150k).Another hide out is OKOKO close 2 Lasu.Bt 4 me its 4 girls who re very desperate.Girls who dnt knw their worth.Cos if u knw ur worth u wnt pay 4 ur talent.people will pay u 4 ur talent.Evrything balls down 2 nollywood nt avin a structure like hollywood. If we did all this bullcrap wnt hpn.Ibinabo nids 2 cme in fast and exercise veto power.Let her get sum scape goats.Snub all error.Amma
ReplyDeleteApparently corruption has permeated every nook and cranny of our society. The female artistes obviously use this phenomenon as a springboard to thrive in their "Runz biz", as they become more expensive and classy to their aristos.

ReplyDeleteVery true Linda,my gf is an actress so i get to hear a whole lot. Not even payment alone,in some cases, they also demand sex plus payment and the girls gladly oblige. It is so rampant now that the film makers even beg some A-list actors and actresses to do movies for them free or some times offer to give them fuel money only.
ReplyDeleteLISTEN YPU ALL. THE PEOPLE THAT WANT TO PAY WANT TO PAY. IF YOU ARE CONFIDENT WITH YOURSELF AND YOUR SKILLS. ITS A MATTEE OF TIME YOU WILL EXALE. SO FORGET THIS RUNBISH TALKS. ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PAY DID IT COS THEY KNOW THEY AIRENT GOOD ENOUGH. SO END THIS STORY PLS IS NOT A GIST.

RITA DMINIC MAKE SURE YOU READ MY COMMENT.
How about upcoming musicians paying radio OAPs before their songs get played and eventually no media house pay these artistes royalties.
ReplyDeleteAnother name for it is exploitation...
ReplyDeleteNa only money them they collect from those talentless desperadoes???
Dem dey also collect ynatsh!!!
Little wonder many Nollywood movies are just a joke, with pepper-sellers, shoemakers, vulcanisers, Omata traders, etc, making up the cast and crew of many a Nollywood bastardly compromised movie set!!!
mmmmm right from when i joined nollywood,it has bin like dt...it started wif tricking desperate chicks into havin sex and giving dem roles....retard3ed producers
ReplyDeletena today, everybdy dey do ear like sy dem neva hear or eye like dem neva see.
ReplyDeleteThis person calling names. Are you very sure about yourself . Beefer like you. Did these names tell you they paid solo, okwii and uchenancy money. If you swear you will die. Better ask god for forgiveness because you just told a big lie to the world due to your beef and your own inability to deliver and get the same roles they get which you claim they pay for. People like you will never see any good thing come there way until you ask God to forgive you so long these names you had the guts to mention are innocent. Be careful how you antagonise innocent people . Let God be the judge with what you did. Looser....
ReplyDeleteVery true. I know a friend that has this experience. She paid for the waka pass roles they gave her and also got slept with by three different men over a course of a year she was rolling with them. Till date ,dey haven't made her popular actress. Naija is messed up in every facet of life.
ReplyDeleteThis is preposterous they re banning actresses cos they are being paid to do their jobs but won't ban dese useless producers for extortion! Oh please
