US Senator Ted Cruz apologizes for offensive remark about Nigerians

On Monday Oct. 21st, US Republican Senator Ted Cruz told a rally that Nigerian email scammers have been hired to run the Obamacare website, a comment that a lot of Nigerians found offensive. After being bombarded with several phone calls from Nigerians in Houston and all across the US, the office of Ted Cruz has issued a statement from the Senator apologizing for what he said.
 
The full statement reads:
 
It’s unfortunate that we’re living in a time where just about every joke can be misconstrued to cause offense to someone.
To the good people of Nigeria - a beautiful nation where my wife lived briefly as the child of missionaries - no offense was intended.
I am fully appreciative of the range of mutual economic and security interests that make Nigeria an important friend to the United States.
And even to those few unscrupulous email scammers who were the subject of the joke, I apologize to you for the unfair comparison to the utterly dysfunctional Obamacare website.

    As far as am concerned, this is no apology. He ridiculed Nigeria and Nigerians in person, he should apologize in person too. Besides, what does he mean by his joke being misconstrued? Out of all the Nations in the world it had to be Nigeria and Nigerians as the butt of his joke? And when he talks about referring to the scammers, is it only Nigeria that have scammers?     LOL this wasn't really an apology, particularly the first and last paragraphs, but at least he's not pretending he's sorry. His wife living in Nigeria has nothing to do with it. He didn't say how she felt about Nigeria. An American could have lived in Iraq as a child and used that as an excuse to say they mean no offence when they say something offensive about Iraq. I am a tech for a major technical product co. and I go from offfice to office, state to state fixing fax machines, computers, printers etc. Do you know almost 8 out of 10 offices I have to visit, get these embarrasing scamming faxes from Nigeria and oh dont even let me start with the emails! He need not apologize. Nigerians need to rethink their way of life and what gets them going.
