Will and Jada Smith's actor son Jaden Smith shared his thoughts on school on his Twitter page a few days ago....and yes he actually wrote that! Kinda sad that a 15 year old feels this way about school. See more tweets after the cut...

I am sorry Linda but you are clearly the ignorant on here. . . . . . He is not attacking education and knowledge per se but school as a political and social institution that turns our youth into people unable to think for themselves, challenge authority and question the world. And I completely agree with him. . . . . . . . . I think that the way people are taught in school does not promote the love for knowledge at all but simply mold them to survive in a brutal and narrowly defined reality without even questioning who and what shapes such reality and trying to fix it . . . . . . . Have you never wondered why so many of the most intelligent men in history are drop-outs or were bad in school?? Bill Gates, the guy behind Facebook etc ....Did you knwo that Leonardo Da Vinci was refused entry to university?? Even Einstein held as one of the most intelligent people ever wasnt good at school at all because his way of thinking and seeing the world was so forward and challenging so many things. And he said that school is not designed to explore the multiple set of human abilities and nurture forward thinking and his life is a testimony of that. . . . . . . . Basically school goes like this: They give you what is held as knowledge and you have to mindlessly swallow it to vomit it later on a test to have cool points. They never teach you how to digest things on your own way or offer tools for that. This is not about intelligence but simply memory. . . . . . . . The best schooling system in the world is Finland's and their system is set as far as possible from traditional schooling. No grade. No competition between pupils. No homework. Highly personalized teaching to nurture a thirst for knowledge in children. Yet their children have the best test scores in the developed world. By investing this way in their education, Finland, which is a tiny country, has now become a technological hub with brands such as Nokia . . . . . . Look at our schools In Africa. Our children are abused physically, emotionally, tortured, called named and traumatized for what exactly? Look at our politicians, they are supposed to be the brightest, the ones who had good marks, had all these degrees in prestigious school, the best education yet anyone can clearly see that they are dumb as hell and backward and have been dragging us into more misery. FFK is out here caught up in online beefs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has graduated from Harvard, yet she is dumber than a bag of rocks and her reforms have been worsening the situation of the most financially vulnerable Nigerians. . . . . . . Linda even the fact that you cant understand Jaden proves his point; you have been brainwashed into never questioning some arbitrary authorities. . . . . . . . . Jaden spoke the truth and it flew above so many ignorant people's heads that they just cant see it smh.
THEY HAVE CREATED A MONSTER WITH A SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT...EVEN MASTER P'S SON LITTLE ROMEO WENT TO COLLEGE..SO HE CAN EFFECTIVELY COMPETE WITH THE WHITIES AT THE SAME TABLE...EVEN PUFF DADDY'S SON WENT INTO COLLEGE WITH GOOD GRADES REGARDLESS OF HIS DAD'S MONEY...WILL AND JADA JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO THESE CHILDREN...WHAT A SHAME...
I think he is correct because my boss his white and he only went to elementary school and i am a PhD holder so....What's the use of this school?'am happy a educated but still..... -'
,it is not unusual for kids his age to hate school. Most kids go to school because its attached to a better future. This kid has got his future all planned out for him, at least financially. The fact that he still goes to school is a bonus to him. It would be better for him to get an education, to be at least able to manage his wealth. Still ,at his young age ,this little guy is attending the university of life, tht counts as experience. and he can speak better English than most nigerian graduates.
I think he is correct because my boss his white and he only went to elementary school and i am a PhD holder so....What's the use of this school?'am happy a educated but still..... -'
all ye of Nigeria mentality,99% of graduates in Nigeria, please tell me exactly what they are doing with their certificates?( armed robbers, okada riders, ritualist), as low as you see an ordinary mechanic in Nigeria, let the mechanic get to UK or New York, you will see that they are far better than a graduate, i kinda support his notion..... I did my Uni in Nigeria , and believe me, it was a pure waste of four years of my life... people look less of all this handy jobs, but most hair dressers can still pay their house rent than some of ya so called graduates, mechanics are far better than then, Nigerians really need to change their ways of reasoning, School is not meant foe everybody, some will go to school, and still become a nuisance to the society, like the likes of ya Governors, Ministers, and so on.
It makes sense to drop out of school if you know what you are doing and if it is clear the reason *to drop out* is gonna be a success story....otherwise education is key.
I think he is right to some extent..Its not that school is not important..but It becomes unimportant at a certain stage... The aim should be to work towards achieving your dreams.....You might be surprised that many people DONT KNOW WHY THEY ARE GOING TO SCHOOL.Moreso most top Billionaires aredropouts.
Don't study shogbo!!..how many drop outs became Bill Gates and Steve Job..Jaden's folks are rich he can afoord to say this..those poor ghetto youths better not try this..last time I checked the Investment bankers that rule the banking world and dictate the World economy..all educated.. The Accountants and Lawyers that secure and emlarge his Dad'd estate..all educated... Education gets you into places you never could imagine..the choice is yours..just cos a million are not doing much with their certificate..what has that got to do with u??
Jaden is an ignorant, rich Lad. You see, that is the reason why we should not listen to his words.. His parents are rich so he does not feel the need to go to school.
Seccondary school is a must 4 us africans, bcos english is our second language, nd its also important in d westen world, but university is a waste of time, the certificate can't get u a bank loan, d whole economy is controlled by people who did nt know wat university is all abt, even d banks are owned by uneducated people, all they do is employ educated ones 2 manage it, nd sack them wen dey find sum1 better, university kills ur entrepenueral skills, all u do is calculate nd calculate sumtin u will neva practice, nd wen u don't do it well, d lecturer call u dumb, let him go 2 ask dangote if he can prepare an account or balance an account, maybe draw a graph showing demand nd supply curve. Bottom line. U go 2 d university 2 work for those who did nt go
I hated school to bits at 15! Has nothing to do wit money or wealth, its a phase! To be quite honest i hated school n my mom combined all thru my teens! Teenage life is tough in d kid, d folks n d school oh! Its d period u think u know everything and need no one! Jaden will grow up soon n wont believe he ever said dis
The boy is right, we were supposed to go to school to be educated (education which has its Greek origin as 'eduko' meaning to draw out), but the opposite is true day. School create close minds and fear. In Nigeria for example, they teach you how to think with the mind of the 16th Century, while the post 21st Century thinkers are light years away. Just read pple comments, you will see how close their minds are.
Nigerians are so parochial in their thinking...and linda for your informtion...the boy is a zillion times smarter than you are....education differs from schooling...great minds have always said schooling had conflicting end effects...just stick to your bloging....you can't comprehend the details....so I wouldn't waste my time...but hey linda show some respect...that's a 15yr old smarter than you are...let's hope you grab dt level of wit in your 50s or 70s if you live that long with your "aproko"..lol
dear LIB'ers...hez jst 15yrs old, alot of kids dislike/hate school, evn we adults, atlst sm of us here cn rmba bin 4rced 2go 2sch evn whn we dint knw d rsn4 sch & wished it wil jst be ova....dis na small pikin tlk + his prnts r rich...free d pikin jare

Those critisizing should go get life n find somting else doing....'Karate Kid'
Actually he is speaking the truth. His comment does not attack knowledge, he is simply saying that school is dumb which is true. I fondly refer to school as the indoctrination of the young, school is designed to feed us with knowledge and shape our way of thinking into a narrowly defined view of the world. It does not allow us to think or utilise our brain or question the world that we live in.
All the gadgets and cars we use are created by brilliant physicists and Engineers..what about Satellite services... Anything worth using is done by educated people!!

@ anon September 16, 2013 at 6:34 AM; your own second language and not everyone. By the way the main foundations of English are learnt in Primary school and by Secondary school you should be a master. Don't mix your situation and upbringing up with everyone else. Also, work on you English. It's obviously your second language.
lol @ Jaden I can't be mad at him...his a product of parents that dropped out but hustled hard to provide. If only they can take their kids to regular skools and stop this B.S of home skooling or some stupid skool Jada and Will opened together...he would write smarter stuff....
I kinda agree with him. #thats because I want to be honest#
I know that we need basic education, as a matter of compulsion but the mentality that education is the ultimate just sickens me.
I know many people will chop off my head for this but I am merely being honest. Look around you, the very rich and prosperous are people who use their God given talents not necessarily those who invest their lives in the pages of books, irrespective of what field. And in a way this is one among the very many reasons why Africa is backward.
We need to explore other options outside academics. How well educated were the likes of Bill Gates and many others. As for me, I'd let my kids do whatever it is they want to do with their lives, so long as it's not a criminal act, and as long as i see good prospects in thier aspirations. However they must have basic education #my definition of basic education is at least graduation from high school or a college of education # not necessarily a university.
It's not sad tho.Linda, he is saying the plain truth...school is dumb AF..it doesn't in anyway prepare you for life..I more than support his statement that sort of says if everyone drops outta school, intelligence will take over.
Ppl are entitled to their own opinions including jaden n obv hes growin n avin mood swingss...if u listened in class n didnt blame the poor boy u wuldnt know this. U dont know what us teens abroad go thru...all dat glistens is not gold
Lalarealtalk along with those others he praised are blessed. You all know ur stuff...Jayden is much more smarter than the rest in the same league with Linda...Linda with all these ur blogging, i think u should spend some time doing worthwhile research such as the history of education, curriculum adopted to educate us and individuals that championed it...i'm sure at the end of ur research, you will see the light and thank Jayden for schooling u. Perhaps u may even start blogging about positive stuff.
I agree with Jaden to a certain extent because formal education is actually not suitable for everyone; it stifles the creativity and originality of really smart children. It is especially bad for us because everything we learn in formal education is euro-centric and so we keep moving further and further away from what we could be as a people. The ancient kingdom of Benin had well laid out roads, storey buildings and technology suited to its own needs before the coming of the white man. Similar stories abound all over black Africa. But we lost all of it and took on the white man's ways. It took intellectual thinking and planning to create the things and build the kingdoms of ancient black Africa. Those who still have the capacity need to start doing something so we can re-discover and integrate our ancient knowledge into our modern education system so that we can move forward. Years ago, there was a young man in Benin that created a television that worked based power generated by some plant based energy system that he developed; he was shut down. What he did was original and probably derived from the sort of thinking that was at work in the ancient kingdom of Benin. Those of us with the capacity and bent need to break from the chains of western education. Jaden is certainly right to an extent.

The best schooling system in the world is Finland's and their system is set as far as possible from traditional schooling. No grade. No competition between pupils. No homework. Highly personalized teaching to nurture a thirst for knowledge in children. Yet their children have the best test scores in the developed world. By investing this way in their education, Finland, which is a tiny country, has now become a technological hub with brands such as Nokia

Look at our schools In Africa. Our children are abused physically, emotionally, tortured, called named and traumatized for what exactly? Look at our politicians, they are supposed to be the brightest, the ones who had good marks, had all these degrees in prestigious school, the best education yet anyone can clearly see that they are dumb as hell and backward and have been dragging us into more misery. ,it is not unusual for kids his age to hate school.

ReplyDeleteall ye of Nigeria mentality,99% of graduates in Nigeria, please tell me exactly what they are doing with their certificates?( armed robbers, okada riders, ritualist), as low as you see an ordinary mechanic in Nigeria, let the mechanic get to UK or New York, you will see that they are far better than a graduate, i kinda support his notion.....

ReplyDeleteSeccondary school is a must 4 us africans, bcos english is our second language, nd its also important in d westen world, but university is a waste of time, the certificate can't get u a bank loan, d whole economy is controlled by people who did nt know wat university is all abt, even d banks are owned by uneducated people, all they do is employ educated ones 2 manage it, nd sack them wen dey find sum1 better, university kills ur entrepenueral skills, all u do is calculate nd calculate sumtin u will neva practice, nd wen u don't do it well, d lecturer call u dumb, let him go 2 ask dangote if he can prepare an account or balance an account, maybe draw a graph showing demand nd supply curve. Bottom line. U go 2 d university 2 work for those who did nt go

ReplyDeleteWhat have we all learnt from school?
ReplyDeleteThe boy is right, we were supposed to go to school to be educated (education which has its Greek origin as 'eduko' meaning to draw out), but the opposite is true day. School create close minds and fear. In Nigeria for example, they teach you how to think with the mind of the 16th Century, while the post 21st Century thinkers are light years away. Just read pple comments, you will see how close their minds are.

ReplyDeleteActually he is speaking the truth.

ReplyDeleteHe is actually right so many things that this white people have use to blind fold us,85% of the people that did great things didn't go to school or believe some kinda shit the book says, we Africans needs to make more research about our past and see that the ancient monks were Africans and they thought the white people all they know before they betrayed us,came back to our land and enslaved us.even the first school ever was built in Africa but they never taught maths and all these shit we learn in schools now! go to Google read about Africa's beginning before the slavery and there monks.... The white people knows this, that's why them know they go school and they do better than us cus they are wiser and corny. And they just gave us this things to occupy our time and brain wash our children into believing some shit can't be possible all the men that built great things never went to school.....read the rest online

ReplyDelete@ anon September 16, 2013 at 6:34 AM; your own second language and not everyone. By the way the main foundations of English are learnt in Primary school and by Secondary school you should be a master.
ReplyDeleteDon't mix your situation and upbringing up with everyone else.
Also, work on you English. It's obviously your second language.
lol @ Jaden
ReplyDeleteI can't be mad at him...his a product of parents that dropped out but hustled hard to provide.
If only they can take their kids to regular skools and stop this B.S of home skooling or some stupid skool Jada and Will opened together...he would write smarter stuff....
I kinda agree with him. #thats because I want to be honest#
ReplyDeleteI know that we need basic education, as a matter of compulsion but the mentality that education is the ultimate just sickens me.
His parents are running a private school which is not doing good day. His parents has money too. it is a little brat ranting .needs to b ignored
ReplyDeleteIt's not sad tho.Linda, he is saying the plain truth...school is dumb AF..it doesn't in anyway prepare you for life..I more than support his statement that sort of says if everyone drops outta school, intelligence will take over.

ReplyDeleteNA BOKO HARAM PEOPLE NA.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jaden to a certain extent because formal education is actually not suitable for everyone; it stifles the creativity and originality of really smart children.
