Teenager flies Arik Air from Benin to Lagos hiding in tyre hole

A teenager named Daniel Ikehina unbelievably beat airline and airport security at the Benin airport today Saturday August 24th and sneaked into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik flight. The boy flew safely with the aircraft which left Benin around 9am today and landed at Murtala Muhammed airport, hidden throughout in the undercarriage. He was immediately arrested by airport security after passengers saw him emerging from the aircraft tyre hole.

Arik spokesman Banji Ola explains what happened:
The management of Arik Air has expressed shock over the incident wondering how the teenager beat the Aviation Security personnel at the Benin Airport to get to the runway.
The pilot of Arik Air flight W3 544, departing Benin Airport for Lagos at 9.00am today 24th August, 2013 reported to the control tower the presence of a strange boy in the bush about 200 – 300 meters at the end of runway 23.
The control tower told the Captain that they were sending security men to the place to arrest the boy.
As the captain was making his final turn, preparatory for take-off, a cabin crew called his attention to the information by some of the passengers that they saw a boy running towards the airplane.
The First Officer confirmed that they had observed it earlier and alerted the control tower which responded that they have sent the patrol team to arrest the boy.  The Captain again reported to the control tower and was informed that the situation was under control and that he had been cleared for take-off.
On arrival at the domestic wing of MMA, Lagos, a teenage boy, who apparently had sneaked into the aircraft main wheel well jumped out and was arrested by Arik personnel and handed over to FAAN security.
Meanwhile the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) blamed Arik Air for the incident.
 FAAN said in a statement:
"Arik Air acted with impunity by not stopping the aircraft to check when the crew and ground personnel’s attention was drawn to an abnormality on the tarmac. This is arrant display of impunity. The aircraft should not have taxied further, but return to the apron until a proper check is carried out on all parts of the aircraft.  FAAN will not tolerate such impunity henceforth from Arik or any airline. Any violation would be met with applicable sanctions.

  22. I was on that flight, FAAN is correct, we drew the attention of the crew that a person ran under the Aicraft as the Plane was taxing for take off, the pilot stopped suddenly, only to immediately take off. Most passengers who saw the boy under the Aircraft where shouting thinking the Aircraft may have killed the boy by colliding with him, the pilot and crew completely ignored all our concerns as if the boys life was not worth it. While we were happy that the boy emerged alive in lagos, this incident shows complete lax in security at the Benin Airport, what if the boy had a bomb?. The Pilot (and maybe the control tower) displayed complete disregard for human life as if the boy was a goat and indeed compromised the safety of all passengers, this leaves much to be desired. FAAN should do more than mere warning.

  30. This sounds like passing the buck, was the aircraft ever directed to abort its take-off and return to its original parking spot for proper security check. I can bet that it was not, as NAMA officials would not have given clearance for take off if there was a suspected security breach. This is a very serious incident, what if the boy was a boko haram agent strapped with a bomb and detonated it mid-air, or at any other point during the flight, it would have been a National disaster. Stella Oduah pls do something quickly about the lack of properly trained security personnel manning our airports, this situation is totally unacceptable I am sure you will agree with me. I respect and applaud the good job you've done in the aviation sector since your appointment, but please sort out the lack of professionalism exhibited by security personnel at our airports.

Airlines, concessionaires and staff pay so heavily to FAAN.Endless multiple charges, even the air breathed around the airport is now charged; yet they can issue a press statement to say an airline that paid you for the flight, even passengers tickets have airport tax surcharge on them but FAAN could not secure the airport. After endengering the lives of everyone one board( if it was a bomb planted too it would have blown up and the youth would have have escaped) they are so shameless still to write that Arike Air acted with inpunity. I think heads should be rolling in FAAN now. Lagos airport is not different. Not long ago during a pre-flight final check on one of the international flights in Murtala Muhammed the Engineer discovered a dead man in the wheel compartment. Investigations revealed he was smuggled their to find his way into Europe. FAAN could not prevent or detect it. Shame. Endengering the lives of millions of people who travel through the Airports. Shame! Big shame on FAAN. All they do everyday is bring up charges and levies as directed by a callous Minister who hides under repainting and putting glasses in airports to say it is tranformation. Shame on FAAN. Shame on the Minister!

  148. The young man should be employed by FAAN and the police....or the army....we need his brains....

    ReplyDelete
  149. How can they blame arik for that, when faan had given them clearance confirming the situation was under control? They noticed a boy, informed atc and faan, faan confirmed it has been handled and atc gives clearance for take off, why will the capt decide on his own to return to the tarmac? I personally won't blame the capt much

  150. That is Naija health and safety for u! NO proper checks, no seriousness in anything...I mean how can u explain the boy seen running towards the aircraft and no one deemed it fit to ensure he was caught before take-off? I was at the airport in Aberdeen heading for Manchester and the fire alarm went off, it took an hour 45 mins to sort things and allow passengers to board (in other wards ensuring everyone was safe)...anyway the rosary on his neck kept him!!!!!!

  175. FAAN is so useless, blaming arid air when the pilot had reported it already. If they truly sent security to check, how did the boy run across the Tarmac from the bushes onto the aircraft?

Meanwhile, this boy must be chopping winshh. He is tired of flying at night so he decides to fly day time. It's only God that saved him
