UK visa: Nigerians to begin payment of £3,000 bond from November

It's a done deal people. From November 2013, Nigeria will be among the six listed Commonwealth 'high risk' countries whose citizens will be required to pay £3,000 tourists visa bond before they are allowed into the UK. The remaining five are: India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

But here's what the UK government are saying to pacify citizens of these countries who are outraged by this new policy. They say it's not all visitors that will be required to pay the bond, just people they consider 'highest risk'; that is people who will collect visa and refuse to leave Britain or overstay their visa terms. Those paying bonds will receive the bond back, if they abided by the terms of their visa.

According to the UK Financial Times report last Friday, the UK Home Office say there's no going back as the scheme is their most effective way of tackling abuse in their immigration system. Nigeria and the other five countries account for more than five hundred thousand visa applications in 2012.

But this scheme will kinda affect business in the UK as Nigeria is said to be the 6th biggest spenders on luxury goods in the country.

The British are the cause of the socio-economic and political problems bedevilling most of the so called third world countries today. The altered the destinies of these nations through colonialism and slavery which is still very much alive. I keep saying it, the act of terror and terroism originated from them.

    5. @jayden, the racism in UK is child's play compared to tribalism in Nigeria. I've never experienced racism in my 15 years in the UK. I spent 4 years in Nigeria until a year ago.
I was refused 3 apartments because the landlord didn't like people from my tribe. I didn't get a job I was up for because the boss's wife's younger sister wanted the job.
You mentioned debt? Did you not borrow the money? If you can't afford to repay don't borrow in the first place. You said plenty of depressed people? Have you bothered to talk to any of the millions of graduates who are walking the streets in Nigeria?
Silly teenagers killing themselves everyday? The average Nigerian girl from 17yrs is already sleeping with men for money to buy BBs, hair and clothes. I dare you to try and use money to get a 17yr old white girl.
Bills bills bills? Dude, are you in Naija at all. The bills we pay in the UK are for the things we use. I pay my taxes and can clearly see them at work. PHCN charges up to 15k pm per household but don't provide light. You spend thousands on petrol/diesel upon your 18k wages.
Loving your country should not mean that you deny the multitude of embarrasing problems we have. Just go to the passport office in Festac to see how many people are trying to get out.

I would rather live in a country where I can park as many cars as I want in my yard, have millions stacked in multiple bank accounts and pay almost peanuts as tax than live in this crazy place where I might have to pay tax for even the air I breath soon.
But then again, the government is to blame for most of the exodus from Nigeria.

Now that they can't loot naija forcefully anymore through colonization they wanna loot naija through this bond cos their economy is running out of money. I pray naijans should learn their lessons and face this head on by cutting all ties with the UK,both educationally and business wise, for just one year starting from that November 2013. Now to Nigerians..from the comments I have read so far here, it is a shame that not one person has proposed or even suggested any positive counter to this xenophobic and almost racist policy.

The Indians would mobilise and campaign against it, but Nigerians would remain complacent, get abused and still pay.

  44. I see no point of this discussion, if a man finds a leakage in his house he will try and mend it, that is what the UK government has done, but Nigeria will not bother if there was a leakage in their house, they will rather not bother or do anything about it, its a growing problem for the UK and this is how they feel best to tackle the problem. We should all be ashamed of having this discuss, if you really have to travel and its very important for you, get the money and travel... but I understand Nigerian travel to UK just to buy cloth and nothing more than that. if for that its a good policy
Please spend your money in Nigeria to boost the economy and stop wasting the last money in your account to travel to UK so your friends we know you belong.. we should start appreciating our Nation and each individual should play a role and make a difference in Nigeria.
You can start your own biz with 3000 pounds including the ticket money and spending money altogether why fight over another mans country and there policy, The same Nigeria drove Ghana away years ago, did you complain about that policy? anyway in all I put the blame on our leaders who have made us poor, a rich country like Nigeria should have all it takes to keep its citizen happy with a better life, they choose not to, it will come to hunt them.

These people share close to the same right as British Citizens and exploit their system. Contributing little or nothing to them. Painful to see people that actually bring money into their system are having to suffer for it. Started last year from the removal of PSW, now to £3000 bond.#SMH

Nigerians in addition to the other countries mentioned have the highest numbers of visa abusers. Do you expect the UK govt to ignore these practices? 62. omolomo...........What is the benefit of common wealth country, can someone help. The way l look at it we Nigerians we will still pay this bond as long as will still want to get out of Nigeria. l know some people that spend millions naira with their agent trying to get U.K,USA and Canada visa some of this people sell their house, car, land to get their Visa. £3000 is just a small % of the money some people spend trying to get their visa and student visa as well. if we nigeria should take this other country will follow ls only the government that can stop this by asking nigerians to first pay two millions naira bond to any Nigerians that want to go to any of this counties as a bond that they will be good ambassador of Nigeria, people will stay at home. And this countries they will be begging people to come to their country. African will need to wake up days of slavery is over let flight for our right and tell our leader what will want and also to love ourself. if we african we can love ourself a white person can not love as well ........love you all my african sisters and brothers xx

  68. How can the UK government come up with such a barbaric idea, and the most annoying part of this conversation is that we have some Nigerians who have bought British passports by "ARRANGE MARRIAGE" supporting such a move e.g "KEHINDE". I want you to remember one thing yeah, that you still have some of your families in Nigeria who will fall under first time visitors and will be expected to pay the £3,000. People such as your father, mother and younger ones who have no intention to come and over stay, how do you expect them to raise such funds? Knowing fully well that they just want to come and see their family members with no intention of overstaying. Or why has the UKBA created the Family visit route which is suppose to enable people who have family ties abroad to see them, if they are now going to make it conditional with the £3,000 bond. They are definately breaching the human rights law on this one and we need someone to call them back to order.
