Transcript of Omotola's speech at MBGN pageant last night

Omotola received the Silverbird Unique Personality Award at the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant last night and during her acceptance speech, the star actress spoke against the Senate bill on underage marriage. Read the full transcript below...
Let me first and foremost thank The Lord almighty, my savior and help for this award. Thanks also to Silverbird group the organizers of MBGN. Thanks to my Wonderful Husband, Capt Matthew Ekeinde,my support and Best friend who is also here tonight. I am Today one of the Most influential person/people in the world because I wasn't given off to marriage before the age of 18yrs.
It scares and totally shocks me that the Senate in Nigeria (the most populous black nation in the world and Giant of Africa) would not be passing in a law ensuring that every child should compulsorily be enrolled in school.
A very alarming number of children today are on the streets Hawking or have been abused,Raped or are married to men/women who should be protecting them.
Who protects the children of Nigeria?
Would we wait for another Milala before we act?
Should we now remove the parental caution on movies that say " Not for persons below 18".
This is a call for justice and Equity for children especially the Nigerian Girl child, who has the right to quality education, a childhood and the decision of whom and when to marry.

My Name is Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and I say No to paedophilia and No to the senate Bill endorsing Child marriage in Nigeria.

  40. Linda stop hiding my comments! Oh puleeeez! Spare me d jargon! Abeg all ya talking should channel dis energy to more outrageous and destructive happenings in Our Country Nigeria. Its high time our youths wake up!its high time we say enough is enough! High time we send all dis power recycling old devious arm robber blood suckers packing!!!On Rethink; I support marrying out a girl "AS SOON AS SHE ATTAINS ADULTHOOD". Now am writing from common sense, because common sense is uncommon!
Nigerian Youths today are the MOST STUPID & IGNORANT set of individuals on earth. A bunch of STAGNANT IDIOTS with no will of moving forward (I do not mean to be provocative).
We waste our time on social networks creating confusion out of nothing.
Months ago it was the OGA @ THE TOP saga! Now its SAY NO TO EARLY GIRL MARRIAGE!
So what if a man decides to marry out his daughter early??? Nobody is forcing anybody to marry out his daughter early. You can decide to keep your Daughter Until 40 or even for a life time, nobody cares! After all you bedded your wife to have her.
Today ASUU is on strike NO youth is broadcasting about it. ASUP just called off months old strike, no tongue sang about it during that period.
When the Government is looting the country we are here pondering on who to marry out his daughter and who not to.
Singing the Gospel " Give the girl a book not a husband" "give the girl a pen not a penis". What if you send her to school and she chooses a boyfriend over her books? Or chooses a penis over her pen?
    What if???
How many of you girls can confidently say "I'm a still a virgin from secondary through tertiary institution?
How many of you guys can say my girlfriend told me its pen over penis?
So please my fellow Nigerians, we should concentrate our forces to say:
    NO TO BAD GOVERNANCE,
    NO TO RECYCLED LEADERSHIP,
    NO TO ASUU/ASUP STRIKE,
    NO TO FUEL HIKE,
NO TO BOKO HARAM vs FG,
NO TO CHILD AND MATERNAL MORTALITY..... So many positive NOs to be said by us.

  53. i believe we have all got it wrong with the issue of child marriage, the constitution and the amendment in question. I signed the petition after which i had to carry out some research of my own (which is what most media personnel ought to do).

The contentious provision, Section 29, allows citizens who are of age to renounce Nigerian citizenship if they wish. For that purpose, the constitution says, 18-years-old and above shall be considered to be “of age”.

In addition, a woman or girl who is married, shall also be considered to be of age-a section that could be interpreted to imply that even a day old child, once married, shall be considered to be of age.

so we are talking about a woman's right to renounce her citizenship at what age and marital status. we can say yerima's little bride can renounce her Nigerian citizenship.

This 'of age status" does not allow a girl child to vote or marry before she turns 18.

I kindly implore our talented writers, bloggers, journalist(esp this journalist who was quoted without verification) and other great minds in the mass media, to please help get reliable and verified facts to readers and viewers in other to avoid such confusion (since you guys bring the news to the palm of our hands). we Nigerians are not jokers, if you hit us with some this hard we are bound to react esp with our words.

To the Nigerian public officials who commented like she/he forgot the copy of the Nigerian Constitution in their drawer or didn't read the memo of the meetings that ought to explain what we need know, thanks for nothing.

We can still do some more research. God bless us.

  70. Hmmm... It always feel great reading LIB blog and the comments. To be honest, we are our problem and we gave the power to this pple to implement all manner of LAWS/policies. We shouldn't select one over other. Human rights is human rights. When they passed a bill against Gay pple base on religion, we all celebrated them. I told my friend, supporting this bill mean we support all future bedroom laws. We gave them the power to implement all kind of rubbish law the moment they gain our support against human rights of sexual minorities. Having said that, it not just about this. Plz, plz, plz pple, we need to move away from social media activist. Don't let pple like Omojuwa lie to u, they are socialpreneur who make money from their daily tweet. Rather, let's put power in the goverment excess, that's where we should be speaking from. Our consitution itself is very problematic and with a lot of contradicting cluases. I am sure many of u shouting #Childnotbride don't even have the constitution or know the content. Move away from following the crowd and start engaging from intellectual point of view.

  77. Much ado about CHILDNOTBRIDE and so little energy put into protesting (if at all we protest) CHILD MOLESTATION, CHILD RAPE, CHILD PROSTITUTION, UNWANTED PREGNANCIES. The latter factors are 100 times more heinous than the former. It's like fighting for the ban of tabacco smoking and caring less about Indian-Hemp smoking. Some of us still have grandmothers at home alive today, both North and South. Some of them got married at 14 years. Were they forced into the marriages? Please go back to your villages and question your 80-90 year old sweet grannies before you embark on a fruitless campaign instead of focusing on pressing issues deteriorating our dear Nation.

Don't knw why nigerians feel d need to constantly criticise people.omotola said she is one of d most influential people, yes she is according to forbes nd she has every right to say it nd wether she got married at 18 or was pregnant before then it was her choice!! This is wat we re fighting for.let female children decide nd choose for themselves when they want to get married nd to who.so can we please shut up about the backbitting nd focus on fightin for female children.I too say no child bride.

  85. I Oladele Adeolu say NO to "child slavery" and not marriage. For marriage takes place btw two adults and not btw one adult and one child (vice versa) or btw children and children. Anything sort of this sinful and it needs not to be legalised. God detest sinful act at any religion you look at it.

  86. Hmmm....What a world; what a life! Are we saying our law makers dont have better things/issues to consider for the good of our nation Nigeria. Hope they wont be entitled to sitting allowance? Cos this is a waste of our resources. If they are done with the agenda they all have for us, then they should all vacate the assembly.

Like seriously wasting precious time on legalizing Child Marriage to cover for their Paedophila.

Now to those supporting #ChildNotBride Campaign:

    Pls if ur Sugar Daddy is as old as ur popsy don't bother joining d campaign;

    If u'r sleeping with a girl not up to 18 years, pls don't bother joining d campaign;

If u had sex before the age of 18(willfully i.e with ur consent intact), pls don't bother joining d campaign.

Hypocrisy is not allowed. Be Warned!

Cos if u dont support Child Marriage while be any of the 3 listed above.

  88. Dnt be surprise if the muslims are nt saying anything abt another disgraceful outing frm their religion, cos just like them, they're all handicapped by cobweb of wash wash doctrine. Their mind is caged by darkened tenets so encroaching that they can't extricate themselves. And how would they find their voice when demonic logs are lodged in their throats. Prisoners of idea. What a pity.

  90. I was curious if you ever considered changing
the layout of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect
with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 images.
Maybe you could space it out better?

Feel free to visit my page similar web-site (www.youtube.com)
