Nigerians in Kenya Protest Police Harrasment and Intimidation

Below is a letter written by Nigerians living in Kenya highlighting the harassment they face in the hands of police.
The harassment has taken a xenophobic dimension,  Just 2 days ago a Nigerian with Valid passport and entry Visa to Kenya was stopped by plain clothes policemen, when they requested for his passport, he promptly presented it to them. The passport was immediately seized and he was asked to to leave Kenya, as Nigerians only come to Kenya to take their woman, he resisted and insisted that he committed no offense, he was immediately attacked and beaten to a pulp and he was bleeding profusely.
The took him to the station and the OCS was so alarmed that he almost got physical with the policemen and insisted the paid for the guys treatment. He has taken pictures and also copies of his statement and dropped at the embassy.

3 days ago, 27 Nigerians were refused entry without Valid reasons yet we have a protocol of giving Visa's on entry by both countries Embassy officials who visited the Nigerians in jails broke down in
tears when the found out that they were not only innocent but that they were tortured and brutalized .

The Nigerian community has also met with leading politicians in Kenya who insist that our Ambassador has not only failed to do his Job, and that if we remain silent about this harassment that it will only get worse.

This case is only one of the many cases that is going on in Kenya.

We as an organization cannot afford to publish this letter on the pages of the Newspapers in Nigeria, but we are appealing and counting on your good graces to help us make our plight known.

Mark you they are complaining about the police...not their Kenyan neighbors, friends, colleagues, business partners, spouses etc. So...generally the problem is not between Kenyans and Nigerians.

There are many students, professionals & traders just doing their thing...so no problem here.

But then, there is a large number of mostly young Nigerian men. They just hang about, do not work. do not go to school. They just party hard...tend to drive big cars, are very loud and liquid... well nothing wrong with this. They can also be a social menace, in the estate. They (used to be) untouchables...so no social complaint against them would go very far...but then, now there is a new sheriff in town, and these hitherto untouchables, who had bought political freedom with the previous sheriff are being packed by the droves and repatriated back to Naija...at least they are not being taken to court and then prison.

Now the Kenya police is of the standard of any African police force, and their operations are not totally up to scratch, and hence some innocent Nigerians are getting caught in the middle...that is unfortunate and should be sorted out.

Kenya is increasingly becoming a drugs conduit country...Heroin from Asia & Cocaine from South America...on their way to Europe....and I need not tell you, out of every 10 arrested on trafficking, 8 are typically Nigerians...and that is a fact.

some times i get to wonder what Nigerians are doing in Kenya a nation dat is not as rich as Lagos state and port Harcourt put together a nation dat the population of three states in Nigeria put together far out numbers kenyan total population. its a pity if only our government can fix this nation then we will restrict people from coming to Nigeria just like the southern Africans beside Kenyan men are lousy in bed

    ReplyDelete
  40. This is incredible! Ordinary Kenya...so they have joined forces in the persecution of Nigerians. Well, I don't blame them. They know we don't have government that is responsible. They know that our country is completely in a state of disarray. They know that the Nigerian embassy in their country doesn't even care a hoot about the people they ought to represent and protect. They know that the Nigerian ambassador doesn't even know the location of the Nigerian house in their country (as he flies from one country to the other squandering and stashing away his loot ) not to talk of knowing the number of Nigerians living in Kenya. They know that in other countries Nigerian citizens are treated like slaves and yet nothing happens. They know that there are so many Nigerian citizens in prison across the whole world for crimes they never committed and our government did nothing and will not do anything . They know that our leaders hate us and don't even have respect or care about us. They know we have charlatans as leaders in fact the list is endless....so what do you expect?!

Nigeria do not have ambassadors ,they get there and all they do is flight for political favours in the country instead of protecting the interest of Nigerians there, kuwait is worse, and many other places,in our own country we are even regarded as second class citizens,a Nigerian man would prefer to employ a foreigner than his fellow Nigerian, and when we go there we are treated like animals. *Sad*

    ReplyDelete
  87. According to olakunle sonriyan, Nigeria is suffering from the "basket of rotten eggs" syndrome. Every country thinks we are too rotten to be associated with. Its no longer western countries, even our brothers think we are to rotten to live in their land. Seriously we have lost it and need a serious reorientation

    ReplyDelete
  88. Kenya has had a thorough beating on this one but at the end of the day, Linda needs to publish the truth and both sides of the story. if Kenya was what has been decribed here then why are Nijas desparate to be there. east or west home is best! Being s Kenyan we do nto want drug pushers on our streets, they can do that comfortably on the streets of Lagos! One big one has just been deported. No offence to naija because I love Nollywood but no amount of insults will change the country Kenya neither will it add more Ugali or fufu to Nigeria!

  91. Pple should pls stop dissing Kenya, when 1 or 2 or even 3 hate u, we can conclude that they re jealous of u but when anywhere u go, pple hate u then u should check urself.nigerians re not the only pple who go and live around the world.another problem nigerians have is stupid pride, look at pple here(nigerians) calling them "common", "ordinary". If they were ordinary then why re nigerians going to live there? With all the money u guys say NIGERIA has, yet they leave that so called "money" to go live in "poor Kenya" even though this doesn't justify anyone to maltreat nigerians but come to think of it,why wouldn't they? Nigerians don't love themselves so how do u want pple to love u, u sit down there and watch ur government robb u of ur future( education, justice ,security, basic amenties, etc) and they re now defiling ur daughters and u sit and watch and do nothing, yet u re calling kenya names.abeg make una park abeg.heaven only helps those who help themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  92. My continuation from 12:43am, my dear nigerians, u can't sit there everytime and say"may God help us, may God help us". Even the God u're talking about carried out a revolution, it was untill he started killing the1st sons of Egypt that pharoah let his pple go.u have to help urself for heaven to help u, if u're praying to pass an exam and u don't read what happens? 2mins u re in church casting and binding but u don't read what happens I ask again? If Nigerians re not ready to fight for their future they should SHUT Up and take any bullshit that comes their way, if they defile ur 13 year daughter, u thank God since what we re good at saying "may God help us" if they maltreat u in other countries pls don't forget to do thanksgiving cos in all situations u should give thanks. Don't forget to smile o cos u re known to suffer and smile.pls no one should diss kenya again, if u respect urself, u will be respected.

God help us wipe all these our dead leader whose interest is to embezzle our resources and leave our roads fucking bad and refuse to give us constant power supply.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Well after spending months in kenya i definitely saw that coming. And people please kenya is not a Godforsaken country, if they had much natural resources she would be better than Nigeria. I was a student there and the school are better than most Nigerian school and since the Nigerian government makes getting admisson to governmet schools difficult and the private school very expensive and day by day having less regards for Nigerian Private unversities many Nigerians have decided to school in Kenay which is way better than 80% of our schools. Also as we have Nigerians going all the way to China for business kenya is one destination where buiness is good. So people kenya is a good place and we Nigerians like to stay in nice places. And not all kenyas are tall skinny and dark, infact those that are are the minority tribe.
Equally, Mr ambassador(Nigerian) to kenya this issue is reason why you are there so do your job and dnt just sit on your fat ass.

    ReplyDelete
  99. No one is immune from discrimination as long as you find yourself in a foreign land. However, God forbid that either me or my generations will in any situation find ourselves visiting Kenya of all nations. My Nigerians brothers never seized to disgrace me. What on earth are they doing in Kenya? That shit place??? oh my word!!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. The time has come for us as a couuntry and people to ask ourselves some basic and simple questions like why do our able bodied men and women are running off to other country to earn a living, why do countries harrass us every time? The last time it was the South African killing Nigerians. Now itz the Kenyans and maybe very soon it will be Ghana's or Togo's turn to harrass and embarass Nigerians living in their countries. How long can we continue to take these from other countries? The time has come for us to hold our political leaders accountable starting from the counsellors, local govt chairmen e.t.c. May God help us.

    ReplyDelete
  101. @chris, keep shut. What is God forbidding? Talk abt ur self not ur generation.. Ur generation can find der selves in a country that is not up to kenya. Watch ur speech.

    ReplyDelete
  102. All those saying "even Kenya" have never been to Kenya...Have probably never even been to Abuja. Have never even been to Lekki, past Phase 1. So be quiet. Kenya is MUCH BETTER THAN NIGERIA TO LIVE IN. THE INFRASTRUCTURE IS BETTER, THE WEATHER IS BETTER...NEED I SAY MORE? THERES ELECTRICITY 24/7!!!
EVEN GHANA IS BETTER THAN NIGERIA!!!! SO THAT IS THE REASON WHY NIGERIANS ARE IN KENYA, NOT SWELTERING IN THE HOT, OPPRESSIVE SUN OF LAG.

But these people must be losers if they cant afford to just publish an editorial (I think its free homies)....

    MAMA IFU

Kenya has proper residential areas with clean water and security all over the city. What you see in the news about kenya is the same way kenyans think lagos is the ilaje people the water people. The international media shows lagos as ilaje pple not civic centre or vgc. Lagos even if you are living in lekki. You will still buy petrol in jerricans. The generator noise could drive you to kenya for the quiet. The heat could also drice nigerians to kenya. The flooding in victoria island. The wayu games. You will def be at peace in kenya. I prefer to live where there is light and clean water. Kenya is beautiful.

  112. What are they doing there? they should leave if they are not welcome. I don't blame Kenyans for this,I study here is Europe,I am so not proud being a Nigerian why is this? our attitudes are terrible, you discover all sort of bizarre, terrible, irritating and horrific behavior associated with Nigerians here. These ranges from 419,shop lifting, fighting in dorms, drugs, just mention any thing horrific mention Nigerians. They lack the ability to behave them selves, they act like they are animals, and they are treated as such.I am a Nigerian, but I am so so ashamed of being one, when I see the manner they conduct them selves here and things they are into, the way they are treated,I can't help but weep some times, they deserve what ever treatment Kenyans are dishing out to them.I only feel pity for the few good and decent ones.If next life actually does exist,I would never return as a Nigerian never,I would like to return as a black still but never ever a Nigerian, and whats more, here Nigerians detest them selves a lot.

  114. Hello Nigerians. Most people commenting -ve about Kenya here have never been outside Nigeria. I'd like to burst your bubble Nigerians. Your country is not as great as you wat to think it is. Just count the number of Kenyans in Nigeria, then I will tell you the number of Nigerians in Kenya. That way, we will know which of the two countries is better. No one leaves a great country for a worse country.
