Back stage at the Rothmans Groove tour which held @ TBS in 1998, there I was seated with the likes of The Plantashun Boiz,Dr. Fresh,Remedies and more...I was just a young boy trying to weigh his options on what direction to go with his career as drumming, rapping, producing and comedy were few of my options.
That night was the 1st time I met Tony Tetuila, one of those humble guys you come by,he was warm and accommodating considering the obvious fact that I was nobody in the industry.
Fast
forward a few months later, Comedy had won me over and in the course of
my hustle and journey to where I'm yet to get to, I bumped into Tetuila
in Festac, just about the time his single 'you don hit my car' came
out.
We
reconnected while playing catch up. We had common friends so 'bumping'
into each other became a tradition. The 1st time he saw me perform @ a
concert was at a gig The Plantashun Boiz used to host @ the Den in
Ikeja.
I
must have impressed him because not long after that night, I got a call
from him asking that we meet up. We did and he took me for a meeting in
Lagos Island (Shell Office). A director at Shell was retiring and a
send-forth party was being held in his honour. My performance fee then
was N10,000, Tony pushed it up and convinced the client to pay N30,000
which they paid cash. Prior to this, they had never heard of me and only
used me because Tony believed in me and stood up for me, convincing
them to buy in.
I was paid in full a week to the show.
After
picking up the cash I went straight home. Now here I was, a young
comic with his 1st major pay-out of N30,000. Considering the fact that
my 1st performance fee was N300 (1%) of what I had in my pocket,I
couldn't help but to thank God.
I got home, gave my mum N25,000 and kept N5,000 from which I bought a shirt, pants and shoes from Tejuosho market to wear for the event. Ready for my first big show..
LOL! This guy dey always burst me...Meet A New Friend In Nigeria

ReplyDeleteI feel like crying,, becos I have been through this before..... Lord have mercy on our souls and grant us all that our Heart desires through Jesus Christ Our Lord . Amen remember when you linda said" You guys have changed my life in ways that I can not even begin to tell you. Just four years ago, in 2009, while a CEO of a modeling and events company, I went to the ATM to withdraw money from my account. I checked my balance and it was N800. I wanted to withdraw N500 but the minimum balance you can leave in your account then (don't know if it's same now) was N500, so the ATM didn't give me the N500 I desperately needed. I tried to withdraw N300, but found out the minimum one can withdraw from an ATM is N500. I went home feeling down, wondering when my life would turn around"
Hope now you see... How it feels..... Tears rolling down my eyes..... I have seen and conquered and still counting Deo Gracias ...

ReplyDeleteHere to drop my bit! Yes its commendable to see a brother appreciate another enough to standup and be a positive enabler in another's life, to encourage you to actualising your dreams. Its also very good to see you recognised and as a matter of fact, you recorded it how much of an impact Mr. Tony Tetwila he was in making the Basket Mouth we all appreciate today. But Bro, beyond your just saying it, what have you DONE for Tony lately? I have no clue if he is holding his own in these age and time u get to hear about artists forking out tons of millions on blinging rides and stuff. You may want to pay him a visit bro!
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to be humble imagine if tetuila had shoved him off disrespectfully not knowing what basket mouth would become today. I tap into ur testimony man
ReplyDeleteMehn so so touching... Mother is always that gold may God continue to keep U up

ReplyDeletethere is nothing small to start with, the question is “ how courageous are you to start ”
ReplyDeleteSo the moral of this is???
ReplyDeleteWell sounds like Tony was your benefactor, Mr man. Maybe you should show your profound gratitude to him with a car as gift. You don build house for your mama, come buy machine for your Mrs. Wetin come remain? My brother, i think it's time to pay it forward.
Hahaha, just kidding. I know Mr Bright Okpocha is a generous man. More grease sir!
Nothing is too small for a start, the question is “ the starting courage ”
