Nigerians to start paying £3, 000 to enter the UK from November

Naija people, una dey hear this one? According to a report by UK Daily Mail, visitors from 'high risk' countries in Africa and Asia will have to put up a £3,000 cash bond to enter Britain.

The money will be kept by the Government if visitors do not return home by the time their visas expire.

A pilot scheme, introduced by Home Secretary Theresa May, will target hundreds of people coming to Britain on six-month visit visas from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The countries have been picked for their high number of visa applications and what the Government sees as relatively high levels of immigration abuse and fraud, reports the Sunday Times.

The bonds, to be introduced from November, will only apply to non-EU migrants, otherwise they would fall foul of European rights to free movement.

'This is the next step in making sure our immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain,' Mrs May told the Sunday Times.

'In the long run we’re interested in a system of bonds that deters overstaying and recovers costs if a foreign national has used our public services.'

A second scheme will cover countries such as Kenya, the newspaper reports, which are considered to be lower-risk because immigration officials have fewer doubts about migrants' plans to return home.

About 2.2million people are granted visas to enter Britain every year. Last year 296,000 people from India were granted six-month visas, as were 101,000 from Nigeria, 53,000 from Pakistan and 14,000 apiece from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The Home Secretary plans to reduce annual net migration to under 100,000 by 2015.

I don't quite blame the Home Office tho. When people start to abuse certain privileges given to them, you are driven to the point where you've gotta take stern measures to curb it. I feel bad tho, for the good hearted ones who just want a 6month visa simply for 'holiday' purposes.

This is just the beginning! The next set of people to be hit hard by immigration, are those ones that travel abroad to give birth at the expense of tax payers money.

  19. The goverment is only trying to make it seem as if they are serious about immigration issues and at the same time tap more into a billion pound industry. They know Nigerians will pay that sum. We all know that this so called £3000 bond will not change anything. How much do Nigerians pay for entry permit, Tuition fees, shopping and personal needs while in the UK? And you think 3000k will do anything? Average tuition fee for inter students is not less than 10k - 15k per annum. So what will 3k do? Nigerians know how to get 3k.

The way Britain is going about their immigration issue is going to be the death of them and whats more annoying is how misinformed they all are. At least 80% of the UK citizens believe the 'high risk' immigrants come and claim benefits. Their benefit problem stems from their EU membership. Try telling them Nigerians are not even entitled to ANY public funds and they look at you like you're speaking klingon. I agree the system has been abused but a 'security deposit' is definitely not the way to go! So they mean on top of the proof of finances in your bank statement every Joe Blogs must have an extra £3000 to come ride a red bus?! To work here you now need about £1000 in maintenance funds in your account for 3 months before you even apply and they want to throw 3K into the mix?! All you have to do is look in University classrooms to see that Africans and Asians make up a large number of the courses required for the jobs on their job shortage list! No offence to any EU/UK students but studying english, latin, theatre or graphics isnt going to solve the skill shortage problem which they NEED immigrants for. Their economy is going to be hit so hard by this in the long run they'll be begging people to come. Wasnt Cameron in India a while ago? Talking about fast tracking the visas for indian citizens? He should have added 'Oh by the way, Y'all are going to need an extra £3000 when you get to the door, Cool? No Sweat?'.

  83. Linda, you need to start a campaign for the Nigerian government to act on this undiplomatic policy that reeks of discrimmination and imperialist superiority. The U.K. already charges hundreds of thousands of Nigerians astronomous visa fees ranging from 80 pounds to 780 pounds, without granting more than half of the applicants visas nor refunding the visa fees. They already make a guaranteed income of millions of pounds from Nigerians every year and now they have the guts to impose 3,000 pounds on Nigerians before entering their dirty debt-ridden country. Where does that happen? And they have the guts to call Nigeria a "high-risk" country. Does the U.K. think that we're still in the 18th - 20th centuries when they robbed us blind of our resources and dignity for centuries? Where is our government? GEJ needs to retaliate immediately starting from their greedy multi-nationals that are still milking us of our resources and stealing the future of our skilled citizens. Oh, I am so angry, I feel like kicking the first red-faced Brit that crosses my path. Linda, this is the time for you to use your blog to effect positive change. Pls mobilize your fellow bloggers and other media professionals to put pressure on the government and we your readers will support you. Our government shouldn't let this slip by. It's a major slap on Nigeria and Africa. The U.K. is broke and they need Nigeria more than we need them in the next 20 years. Linda, I'm waiting for you to act. People, pls don't keep quiet. We need to stand up.

  104. This is just sad. I'm angry that some bad eggs have infiltrated the system such that things are becoming difficult for the good ones. This is just a means of curbing the illegal and corrupt things immigrants get to. The sad thing is that it is going to affect everybody. The stigma attached to carrying a green passport is worsening over the years. The only issue with this cash bond is the price. It's quite expensive for the average Nigerian. Well, that is the price we have to pay. Hopefully, things will get better.

  169. Good! Very good indeed!! Maybe this will cause some Nigerians to pause and deeply question why they feel a need to go for annual summer vacation in the UK and spend their hard earned (or stolen) money in lubricating the economy of a nation that has consistently proven by its actions that it sees them (Nigerians) as less than human. The British economy makes so much money from visa fees paid by Nigerians and from the money our dense people spend shopping there every year. We Nigerians (government and followers) need to get our act together and stop opening ourselves up to all sorts of countries to mock and degrade. Stay home and help to make this country better. British government, thank you! As for GEJ, he needs to be firm and make sure that we also institute our own security bond for any British citizen that wants to come into Nigeria to do business. If they say they won't come because of that, good riddance; there are many more countries that we can trade and partner with. Finally, all of you who like going on annual vacations to the UK, how many of you even know anything about Naija and Africa? If you must travel, spend the money where it will impact on your fellow Black people.

  171. Many uninformed readers on this blog. The UK doesn't need you otherwise they wouldn't be doing this so get your facts straight. Nigerian spenders cannot even compare to the Chinese spenders so get a grip guys. You are all making noise here, I will go to France, the US bla bla, well go. What do you really know about these countries anyway, you are so disillusioned to think they are more welcoming. Every country has a right to run their land as they please, since UK is dirty, boring, etc why are you all here lamenting. You shouldn't even care abt this piece of news. Your comments say it all. Nigeria is the 'land of opportunity' as you all say so please stay back and enjoy it all.

  172. Why is everyone complaining, its their country. By all means they can do whta they feel is right. They issue you a 6months VISITOR's visa, you decide to hide or go underground and become an illegal immigrant, or you decide to use their health system for the birth of your child after so much lies at the consular and which you DID not contribute a penny via tax or National Insurance, if you have no bad intention you will get your bond back when you leave..sad for those who means well and cannot afford the bond....
