Update on Okiki: The child born without a skull

Okiki was born in 2010 without more than half of her skull, a rare medical condition called Congenital Cranial Deficiency. The people at Global Initiative for Peace Love and Care (GIPLC), an NGO based in Abuja raised the sum of N37m for Okiki's surgery. (If you missed it, read it HERE). Below is an update on Okiki from GIPLC
Okiki in the company of her parents and the Coordinator GIPLC, Mr Nuhu Kwajafa, left Nigeria for London enroute the United States of America on the 27th of April 2013. The journey had to be broken with a brief stopover in London since the doctors were not so sure if long stretch of flying from Nigeria to America will not affect the poor child adversely. They finally left for the Johns Hopkins Medical International on the 4th of May 2013. On arrival they were welcomed by the world renowned paediatrician Dr Ben Carson (and his team of doctors), whose blessed hands has done wonders and whom God will also use to work in restoring Okiki back to normal.
Right now a series of test and examinations are being carried on Okiki in preparatory of the epoch making procedure.

It is worthy of note that Okiki Olawuyi's surgery will be Dr Ben Carson's last major procedure
before retirement. It is also on record that Okiki's surgery ranks amongst the 9th most expensive medical procedure in the world  (source https://payerfusion.com/ceos-blog/10-most-expensive-medical-procedures/).

We thank Nigerians and indeed all who have made this possible. Indeed there is hope still for our great nation and humanity.

  78. Not to put a hole in the bubble but is this expenditure really necessary??? For 1 child????

Every day several children in Nigeria die from malaria and its complications. Several women die from pregnancy related complications and during the puperium. We record huge numbers in the number of deaths as a result of DM,HTN complications etc. I don't want to throw a spanner in the works. I wish Okiki well. I just think that this is a TOTAL WASTE of money and unnecessary propaganda.

And for the record, I am a practicing doctor.

  81. @ Anonymous 11.58 who is a doctor, we all know loads of children are dying everyday, but you can also agree with me that the WHO, UNICEF, UNESCO, WORLD BANK, BILL GATES FOUNDATION, just to name a few, are all directing funds for the the course of eradicating malaria, or reducing deaths caused by malaria, reducing mother/child or infant mortality. The world at large is fighting tooth & nail to eradicate these deaths, It is only therefore appropriate and human not to allow one more die. If the money can be raised to save her, then why do u consider it a waste? the problem in Nigeria is not insufficient funds for complete eradication of malaria and other diseases, we should ask our Ogas @ the top the where abouts of the money.. And yes, I'm a Medical personnel like u too, and ve a masters degree in Public health from a Uk University, so i ve my facts and figures, evident based. '

  82. Dear practicing doctor, if it were your OWN child, you won't be yarning the same dust you're yarning now. Even saving one child's life is important and FYI this surgery currently cannot be performed in any nigerian hospital. Do your research! So y dont u finish medical school and go become a brain surgeon in Nigeria ? Peace xx

    A fellow practicing doctor

    ReplyDelete
  83. Dr Anonymous 11.58pm, TOTAL WASTE?? Please read your comments again. I don't believe you! Do you have children? Sure you have seen children lost their lives but they are "other" people's children so you can't be bothered. May I never experience such a heartless doctor in any of my visits to hospitals in Nigeria. What other options do you give Okiki's parents? Throw the child away? Or what advice would you give the NGO? Ignore that child and let her die? Or live with all the complications that come with her malformation which is no fault of hers. Doctors like you give wrong/ delayed diagnosis because other people are dying everyday so what's the big deal with your patients illnesses...I have lost a child before because of doctors like you, shame on you. That part of your heart that feels empathy and compassion is dead. Ask God to revive it.

Wishing Okiki's parents the very best in this trying times. I pray they overcome.

  96. Anonymous@11:58 PM. You might be a practicing doctor but you sure are a heartless one!!! NO EXPENSE is too much to save one life! Because one life can NEVER be quantified in monetary terms!!! If it was your child nko Mr Doctor? Would you say na leave her alone to die, there are other children around dying from Malaria? "a TOTAL WASTE of money and unnecessary propaganda", SERIOUSLY??? Jeez, this has left me fuming... with doctors like this who obviously don't care about the sanctity of one life; our healthcare system is in trouble! Isn't that what you are meant to do? Save one life at a time? Is it possible to save them all at once??? Please do us a BIG favour and post your name "Doctor' so we know never to consult you... instead of posting as anonymous you unfeeling bastard and spineless coward! And for the record, I have never abused anyone on this blog before but i will make an exception in this case, soooooo pissed!!!
