'Wearing natural hair is unbearable for many black women ' - Adichie

While talking about her new novel Americanah, with Kate Kellaway of The Observer, award winning author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said black women should embrace their natural hair. When asked to give an honest description of her hair and what it says about her, Chimamanda replied:
That is the best question! My hair is in tiny cornrows; I have a big ponytail on the top of my head. I quite like it. It is natural. I am a bit of a fundamentalist when it comes to black women's hair. Hair is hair – yet also about larger questions: self-acceptance, insecurity and what the world tells you is beautiful. For many black women, the idea of wearing their hair naturally is unbearable.
I don't care what anyone says...weaves for life! Hehe

  2. Yes! I've been thinking about this too, so sad we live in a time when almost everyone thinks it's absurd for black women to keep their natural hair. Don't fancy all the relaxers and Brazilian hair stuffs, natural hair for life

  3. Y won't u like weaves . To cover your receding hairline. Truly and frankly I like it when a woman is wearing her natural hair. Adichie is a complete African woman.

  7. Abi o Linda! One man's food is another man's poison. Wearing weaves doesn't mean a lady has a low self esteem. The same thing with make-up. Its all about choices and what suits you. Besides, dis Chimamanda babe added artificial hair to her braids in the photos above. What has she got to say about that? ( ˘͡ -˘͡)

Now it can be difficult to take care of at first because honestly you have no idea what you're doing but over time, it gets easier. You can do so much with natural hair! Many natural girls wear weaves and wigs to protect their hair so it will grow and grow in peace! I'm about to get me a few wigs sef! LOL! I like that a lot of Black girls are going natural and embracing their hair! It is liberating! VIVA NATURAL HAIR!!!:-*

  27. Linda please! Can't be wearing weaves, especially long weaves for the rest of your life. Take a cue from Naomi Campbell.
Also i think this age old barbaric practice of shaving girls heads in primary school up to their second to last year in secondary school is barbaric!! Girls grow up not knowing how to take care of their real/natural hair because for about the first 15-16 years of their lives, they continuously shave their heads even before getting an inch of hair. Then as they grow their hair they always perm it or put weaves and wigs because they were never taught at a young age how to take care of their own hair. Its sad and i think the idea that girls in pubic schools should have to cut their hair should be outlawed!

  33. I HAVE BEEN PREACHING THIS MESSAGE FOR ETERNITY...IT COSTS WAY TOO MUCH TO KEEP UP APPEARANCES WITH WEAVE APART FROM THE FACT THAT one of the main reasons AFRICAN WOMEN don't wear their natural hair is because the only acceptable BEAUTY in the world is the BARBIE type. CULTURE and IDENTITY is totally eroded by this media and material influence in NIGERIA.

The exact SAME reason why they BLEACH...to substantiate this point, I'd like ask if anyone has ever seen a WHITE person trying to attain an AFRO or wearing an AFRO WIG.

  50. Well I am natural as well but I wear weaves on occasion! but I love my natural hair actually I prefer it. and so does my husband. I cut it like a low cut 5 years ago and now my hair is half way down my back. The key is in whatever style you choose you need to take care of your natural hair. get it trimmed and conditioned and you will be great! the less you do the better. and stay away from relaxers they are the devil. They are carcinogenic and break off your hair I know from experience.

  51. Namesake I used to have weaves but decided to go the natural route and trust me, my hair is more healthier and I look much younger. Many people here in the states always complement me on how good looking I am and how it gives me that innocent and natural look. Carrying natural hair is very easy. It's just that our society makes it sound like it is hard.

  55. What does it profit a girl that feels 'on-I'm-so-natural' to lose her boyfriend to a Brazillian weave wearing girl? The hair is just one of the things we women copy from the Americana people. Our clothes, jewelries, toileteries, shoes, language, etc! She should make sure she uses leaves for clothes, cowries for jewlery, palm oil or ude nji for creame, black soap for soap and never be caught speaking any language buy Ibo. Msheeeeeew. She thinks cos she uses beads on her braids, she 'natural'? Abeg abeg abeg. Lemme hear word biko. Different strokes for different folks. You say its white, I say its black. You say its round, I say its rectangular. Calling out black women on weaves like that, saying we have low self esteem, is just foul. She shouldn't have even gone there. Her attachments are not expression. She buys them expensive. And they come from other women's hair as well. She should go and hug transformer for all I eff'n care! Mshhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwww! She just shouldn't allow me to put pen on paper and write a biased review of this her new book. Oh wait, I just finally caught on, this was a cheap publicity stunt to put the word out there about her new book. She did well with the others without this myopic controversy, she just shouldn't have!

  56. Linda pls help me ask LIB readers to advice me.
I have been happily married for two years and my husband has been such an amazing person. My hubby is such a supportive husband, we cook together, clean the house together, he even helps me to take out my braids and we have had a wonderful sexual relationship until recently.
My hubby loves to have sex and I have learnt to love it with. Sometimes I even go to his office during my off days for a quickie.
But recently he started having some sick fantasies of him eating chillie (I mean raw nigerian pepper) from my cooooch (vagina).
He says he just wants us to be adventurous and slice chillie there and he'll eat it up and blow me in the process.. Of cos I refused that but my hubby has become a totally different person since then and he is even looking for a young hotter girl that'l agree to this.
I really love him and I don't want Chillie to come between our marrIage.
    Pls what should I do.

I will not put someone else's glory on my head. The thought of it makes me sick. Weaves look like a total joke on black women. I stare at weaves and think are you serious? Grow your natural hair women and learn to take care of it. God gave it to you for a reason.

  69. Somehow i agree with her but its just that the weather here is too harsh to grow our natural hair unlike in the US. Most women in the US are more or less growing their natural hair. Personally, i have decided to go on natural hair whilst texturising it once in a while cos all these relaxers end up weakening hair than helping it. Not to talk of the disappearing front hairlines due to these human hair sef. Linda show us ur front hairline. Lol

    1. Actually you're wrong. Black hair grows better in warm climates, after all that's where we are from. The issue may be the availability of good products for taking care of hair vs being in America or Nigeria or whatever.
The cold climate is terrible for black hair.

  70. The vast majority of black women who process their hair, wear weaves and do other things to try to get straight, oyinbo hair are suffering from low self-esteem. We have been so convinced that naturally kinky hair is 'bad', that even children these days wear weaves and perm their hair. It is crazy! And Linda, maybe you need to find out what actually motivates your hairstyle choices before you boldly proclaim 'weaves for life'. You are a blog writer whose words and actions could potentially influence some of your young and impressionable readers. Black people have a long way to go to reclaim their racial pride and self-esteem. I am always amazed at how we as a people, have largely come to believe that the hair God gave us is a mistake and a burden. Also, isn't it sad that black women, who have one of the highest population of poor and vulnerable females among them, are the ones who spend gazillions on hair extensions and hair straightening products; keeping the Asians in business? If I had the power, I would ban the importation of weaves! Finally, I find it really amusing and embarrassing when I see black women trying to flick their fake hair the way white women do ... LWKMD! Sad; really sad and pathetic.

  91. This is absolutely true. It is disgraceful to think that black ladies have been deceived over time that they need an artificial hair to look beautiful. I though I was the only one sharing this view. Why will a man want to pass his fingers through a fake hair, it's so boring. At some point after the woman leaves your bedroom, pieces of her hair will be flying everywhere in your room. It's filthy and I see this as a complex issue and lack of confidence. Oyinbis have already made them feel that they can never be regarded as pretty until they put on a weave.. We still under mental slavery... Lol

    3. Ms. Adichie is full of her self. Half the time, she doesn't think through what she wants to say before she says it. Being the author of a few half baked novels doesn't make her an authority on every subject. She happens to have long and full hair and not every woman is as lucky as she is. She should stick to her story telling. Can't stand that woman.

  111. I like chimamada but trying to be pan African shouldn't be selective naa!why weave ur corn rolls with attachments?aint that artifice too?how's is it different from weaves? If u truly love ur kinky~headache inducing~hard to comb~nappy~hair, u won't ve to defend it all the time! #yawns#signed:wide eyed.

  112. It's not by force to go natural. All these other women who r natural thinks the rest of us are insecure abt ourselves if we choose nt to go natural. They dnt understand that not everyone can go natural n maintain it. I love natural hair n I wld love to go natural but my hair is so coarse it's hard to comb through it. I transitioned for 6months n I was going through hell with my natural hair so I say not everybody can go natural n if we dnt it does not mean we are insecured about ourselves or looks.

    ReplyDelete
  113. She's beautiful...really dere s nothing as beautiful as a nice weave..makes u luk younger&cute but I guess we jst av a mentality dat weavons&wigs make us luk more sophisticated..wish I cld be like her tho..

  119. Now I lik u more linda, I told u to post this on ur blog and u did.. Really wana know how our girls react to it.. In btw I adore chimamanda, she is one of my best writers

    ReplyDelete
  120. Shame on you Linda. This is your inferiority complex showing itself. It is your complex that makes you feel inferior while wearing your natural hair. It is this kind of complex that makes black ladies to bleach their skin because they feel being white is better than their blackness. Why should you be wearing a white woman's hair? Why must we be like them? Why can't they be like us? We have lost our priorities and that is why we don't achieve anything. I am all for one with Miss Adichie and that is how she has been able to speak and represent us well....Not with weaves of those feeling inferior of their naturalness.

    ReplyDelete
  121. get over ur big ass head...its not the hair but the person rocking it....

    ReplyDelete
  122. I agree with Chimamanda, she has said the correct thing. Many of us black feel too inferior with our natural state so we want to be like the whites. Nonsense. This is why we are considered nothing to them. Unfortunately someone like Linda buys this idea. Yes, she does and that is why you see her in weaves always. It is a shame to us blacks for not appreciating our nature.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Linda that's your opinion,we all should go back to the roots. Have decided to go natural, best move so far as my hair has grown tremendously. Enough of all the fake weaves you all have on these days. I love Ngozie, she's doing us proud

    ReplyDelete
  133. Chimamanda..Probably the best in class of current contemporary writers..Her simplicity, originality and deep intellectualism never ceases to amaze. She is truly an embodiment of the amazon values of the Nigerian and African woman.

    ReplyDelete
  134. great woman always representing..... can't forget ur ted presentation (THE DANGER OF A SINGLE STORY).... GOD please give us more women of this caliber.

    ReplyDelete
  135. It's no brainwash. Ppl who have difficult textures to manage seek to alter them. Blacks with unmanageable texture should not be judged or told they're not embracing their beauty. I'm natural and joined this movement to rediscover my natural texture. After 4 years is been ok because I have a great texture. It's kinky 4c yet for some due to density natural hair may not work. No matter if one is natural or not it has more to do with texture regardless of race. Ppl please ignore the hype out there.

  136. Chimamanda is beautiful !

  138. For once I've seen someone who thinks like me. I just don't like them Wigs, weavons etc. Does it ever make them feel like it their real hair? Briades are bit better. I just prefer my woman to make her hair in any other way other than using an artificial hair to to cover fix or cover her real hair.

    ReplyDelete
  139. y dont u post my comments @ linda, not nice...lol

    ReplyDelete
  140. This is talking with your tongue in your cheek. The attachment she used in doing that 'Ghana weaving' nα her own?

    ReplyDelete
  141. Der is beauty in simplicity n dat is a sign of true African

    ReplyDelete
  142. No be only natural. Just cos I haven't relaxed in 4mths, combing d hair is war!!!! Even with conditioning o. Abeg relaxer, braids n weaves jire!

  148. I love Chimamanda but I have to disagree with her here. Wearing weavs is a choice. It is not about insecurity or self-esteem issues. I think long hair is sexy so I wear long weaves. It isn't about what the world says is beautiful but about what I think is beautiful. i have absolutely nothing against girls who keep well-groomed natural hair, they look great. I am a strong, beautiful, smart and very confident Nigerian girl, I like hair that gets to my waist-line so I wear weaves. It is my choice.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You are more or lea being influenced on what is beautiful. That's the truth if all other races started wearing afros.or cornrows i bet you'd follow suit

  150. And all the cheap low self esteemed aristo chasing girls come out in the dozen to insult her. Na low self esteem dey worry una

    ReplyDelete
  151. You igbos are something else. All this: "she is so beautiful" and "beauty plus brains" you are all yanring is mostly cos she is an "igbo" girl. You guys sometimes just support your people blindly. Who made chichi judge and jury. leave black women to keep the slave master mentality biko. If this was a yoroba babe im sure you would all have given it to her well well

    1. So you now know the tribe of all anonymous commentators?

  152. Linda biko make her beauty of the year. She is smart, intelligent, confident, achiever, and very authentic. These are the qualities young nigerians should be trying to emulate.

    ReplyDelete
  153. ok, i will say it once and for all, linda do a poll for men regarding the type of hairstyle they prefer. African women look prettiest and sexiest with braids and african attire. Eziokwu bu ndu!

    ReplyDelete
  154. Where do I begin?

    1. There is a fundamental difference between using extentions that mimick your natural hair texture vs extentions that were cut off the head off a Peruvian, Brazillian, or Indian woman's hair. Do you see those women sewing African hair on their heads? No, because they prefer their own hair texture to yours.

    2. Every black woman has some sort of course, "hard" hair. That doesn't stop you from learning how to care for it. There are books, blogs, and plethora of resources available to you if you actually care to learn. Your hair doesn't have to be hard or unmanageable if you use the right products and techniques.

    ReplyDelete
  155. You pple are unbelievable. Perhaps you should read what she wrote properly so u can get the message loud and clear.

It is not about natural hair or not, it is about being secure and confident with your choices.

Do what u like, not what everyone else is doing.

Geeze!!!!illiteracy in naija is a serious issue.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Adichie is BORING - she doesn't present new material.

    ReplyDelete
  157. natural hair indeed, but you use attachment. it has nothing to do with confidence.Everybody has preferences. And am sure you texturize you hair and use all sort of artificial cream in it.Tell me what is natural about that...

you are not better whether natural or weaves.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I Am Chimamanda's #1 fan! She's so beautiful and intelligent! I love my natural hair as well. But its hard to comb, especially during winter and spring it breaks and gets painful while running my fingers through it.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Kai! Dis lady z pweety!!

    ReplyDelete
  160. She is wearing synthetic attachments in all three pictures lol.

Weaves are hair attachments you can simply put on and off as you wish. To each their own, but these naturalists are starting to get on my nerves.

    ReplyDelete
  161. My dear Linda, this is what I call BEAUTY. This lady is naturally beautifully. She will look like herself when she wakes up in the morning. Not some of those "pretty" babes with fake hair, fake teeth, fake nail, and fake face. ha! ha! ha! ha! When you see those "pretty" babes when they wake up in the morning, you will not recognize them. Try it and see. Look for some of those your beauty of the day and ask them to send you their pictures when they wake up. You can then compare. You will be amazed that some of them will be word and opposite. lol!

    ReplyDelete
  162. This is the original beauty of the day! Ha! Linda! This is a woman, African beauty in her natural hair! Abeg don't ever post all those papamulolo rubbing females as beauty of the day anymore. Even if you don't have front hair, there's a way you can package urself and still look beautiful except you are completely bald! Love this Chimamanda gurl.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Chiamamanda the idea that u got married to another man not me is very unbearable too.

    ReplyDelete
  164. the insecurity part might be true. cos some people feel that they will not be beautiful if they wear their natural hair.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Exactly @Miami, for anon 08.30,agree with him, and after he has chopped up d chili, FIRST, he must massage it deeply into his penis especially where the wee hole is, then leave it to marinade for a few minutes!

    ReplyDelete
  166. Only females with low self-esteem are scared to wear their natural looks. #justsaying.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Food for thought for Linda and her weave -wearing cohorts. By the way, who said kinky hair was ugly!Just listen to yourself linda "weaves for life". How did our grandmothers manage their hair since there were no weaves at the time? wn i look at those old black and white pictures i noticed our grandmothers had big thick shiny hair.Linda go to your grannies and have the humility to ask them how they managed to care for their "ugly unmanageable kinky strong stressful shameful stiff rubber-like" hair. So our hair is ugly cos it doesn't flow when the blows, abi? Dat is why u go for brazilian and malaysian hair. Inferiority complex is killing us africans and u wonder why we are always backward. If only we could see ourslves the way our Creator sees us...really Linda, weaves ok but artificial hair for life... how do u feel wn pple compliment u on your "hair" and u take all the credit for hair that is not even yours? Oh i forgot. You bought it with your money so it's "yours"
So laughable and sad at the same time, but that is our society today

    ReplyDelete
  168. #Team Natural Hair. I'm still transitioning. My 10th month though.

    ReplyDelete
  169. why she add attachment to her natural hair now? let her stop to dey mumu herself jo she also has extensions in her hair

    ReplyDelete
  170. Wow..She's talking about being natural with all that "expression" on her head. Puhlease!!!!!! Weaves are awesome!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  171. natural hair is good but what of the woman with thin hair that dont look good with low cut. they should hide them selves abi?

    ReplyDelete
  172. linda am wit u on dis...weaves for life.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Linda! This is what you should tag as beauty of the day. Not all those ridiculously made up and photoshoped assisted people, hissssssssss. Sick of them all. And post my comment.

    ReplyDelete
  174. People asking why she has extensions is stupid! To add more length to her hair not to completely alter her look like a lot of Nigerian women do. They will wear 10 packets of weave while their real hair is as scanty as a new born baby's hair or Ramsey noah's hairline. Even Pete Edochie and Desmond have more hair than a lot of Nigerian women with their bald hair.

    ReplyDelete
  175. And extensions cannot hide baldness and receding hairline or baldness like weaves. She looks like an African woman and not a black one trying to be like the foreigners. Do not compare. They are different.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Anonymous 1:35 AM

If you can spend money and time on acquiring weaves on your head then you can invest in letting your hair grow to that length.

Black hair can grow to whatever length you want as long as you understand your hair.

We underestimate the beauty of our hair that's why a lot of us cannot show our real hair in public because we've fucked it up for fake hair.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Linda, this is d real beauty of the day!

    ReplyDelete
  178. I would wear y hair natural if i could get it to look as good as hers but kinkiness hasnt paid girls like moi

    ReplyDelete
  179. Call me what you like, but I have always thought it is the height of low self esteem to feel more comfortable adding hair thats not yours to your hair in order to look "beautiful".
I do not know who set the standard that beautifull hair must be oyinbo looking hair. "Civilized" Black people seems to me have bought into the Oyinbo narrative that we are inferior. Simple.
