I got calls this morning from a few LIB readers inside a British Airways flight at the Abuja International Airport. They told me that the BA 8:30 flight to London was preparing to take off when the right engine of the plane just stopped working. They heard a noise and then smoke. The plane had to be towed back to the tarmac.
As at the last time I spoke with one of them, engineers were trying to
fix the engine. I even heard the pilot making an announcement. They are not sure if the flight will continue or if it will be cancelled, but they are all still inside the plane at the moment. BA has been given 40 minutes to fix the engine or the flight will be cancelled...for safety reasons. Will keep you guys updated.
Update: All passengers have been asked to leave the plane
Update 2: The flight has been cancelled

ReplyDelete~BONARIO~says so via NOKIA3310
Thank God it was detected before the take off
ReplyDeleteIf i know Nigerians, they might not be interested in the flight anymore. Nobody wants to be on the news headlines for something far from positive. I think the bright side lies in the fact that the issue started on ground and not in the air because that will have been an entirely different story. Listen closely to the people as some will claim they were supposed to be on that flight.
ReplyDeleteWell they run one of the best airlines in the world, so they take precautions, they don't play with human life...
DeleteThank God ooooo it didn't happen on air!hmmmmmmm.
ReplyDelete*Naija don go collect witchcraft 4 dem*ĤƐĤƐĤƐĤƐĤ
ReplyDeleteThey should try & cancelled d flight, we don't need another plane crash. GINA

ReplyDeleteAfta dey'll b cursing out dana!lol no airline is above mistake, thnk God dey had nt taken off!I'll b shaken if I was on dat flight
ReplyDeleteYou are stupid! Its not about the plane crash, its about what caused it and compensation for the victim's families.
DeleteDana still has given us nothing after all this time. How i wish the NTSB from Washington D.C. Got involved. Shitty government that doesn't case to investigate anything unless it involves a member of their own family
I support your statement. Its such a shame. Someone or a group of people who lost loved ones should sue Dana. We need to stop sitting on our rights. Enough is enough.
DeleteAlicia, thank you for your response. People just open their mouths and spew rubbish on this blog. Are you serious about dana not paying compensation till now @Anon 10.24,The dana airline should not have been flying in the first place. I believe you still remember the age of the aircraft. Stop coming on here to display your ignorance. I am sure dana wld have continued with the flight or done a half fix and taken off.
DeleteThank God it was discovered before it took off
ReplyDeleteThank God it happend b4 take off...*whew*

Thanks Linda, God bless you. Sometimes these operators have no conscience. Am sure the quick media blitz helped in favor of eventually putting the passengers safety first.
ReplyDeleteBA doesnt need media blitz. They know what to do. U think its all these nigerian airlines. There is no 'machine' that doesnt develop faults. What comes into play is the conscience of the operators, their ethics, their expertise and above all God.
DeleteIts all 'bout standards. Naija's standard Is SooO pOOr that even a FAULTY BA aircraft could meet it. TUFIAKWA!
DeleteWow!no hurry in life!oooooooooo
ReplyDeleteThank God it happend on ground,if not "na anoda story we for d hear" BLESS GOD
ReplyDeleteMs or Mrs Gina pls its cancel not cancelled abeg. amyways thank God yhis didnt happen on air if not it would hv been another tragedy in naija.

ReplyDeleteThank God it happened before take off..it only shows †hå† these airlines don't check their planes from time †σ time..God help us all.
ReplyDeleteJeez! What a disaster averted! Thank heavens!
ReplyDeleteLOTS OF PEOPLE DONT KNOW THAT ONE ENGINE CAN ACTUALLY BE ENOUGH TO FLY A PLANE, iF FOR EXAMPLE THE ENGINE FAILS THE OTHER ENGINE WOULD BE ENOUGH TO LAND THE PLANE SUCCESSFULLY TO THE NEAREST COUNTRY. iTS FOR SAFETY REASONS THATS WHY A PLANE MUST HAVE TWO ENGINES.
ReplyDeleteThank You Lord. Another tragedy prevented.
ReplyDeleteActually those planes are designed to fly even with one engine, my concern is the smoke though. Well lucky for them.
ReplyDeleteThank God nothing happened,i have also been in a similar situation, ours was a virgin flight but in our case the engine started and went off during their usual check and did not start again. waited for over 3 to 4 hrs b4 the flight was canceled still.it all still boils down to our Airport authority. more seriousness and proper check should be done.. accidents are prone to happen but we can reduce its occurrence.
ReplyDeleteonly God knows what would have happened 2day o!!! dis 1 nah big testimony!! e no work 4 devil dis time o! they should please cancelled that flight.
ReplyDeleteTank God it happened on land if not we F̶̲̥̅̊ọ̥я̩̥̊ hear news dis wondaful monday morning. TESTIMONY TIME!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's because he know the thought he has for all of us, to give us a successful flight not a plane crash.
ReplyDeleteThe flight be cancelled and the plane should be grounded till further repairs and tests have been carried out and the plane is certified fit for such a long flight. Make e no go cease for air o, Hmmmmm this is disturbing.
ReplyDeletehaaaaa! they are till contemplating that the plane flies after 40mins of repair? hurry hurry repair? father lord!
ReplyDeleteam really beginning to get scared of flights.
Do they have to be told to leave before leaving the plane? Nawa for our people oooo. They obviously don't like themselves
ReplyDeleteoluwa!

ReplyDeleteThis would have been an ironical time to be listening to that song dat goes lyk "I'm leaving on a jet plane,, don't knw when I'l be back again",,,,lol,, cos I'm sure if they had left for the uk on that plane,, that would have been the end!!
ReplyDeleteThank God ohhhhhhhhh
ReplyDeleteThe British Airways planes that fly the Nigerian route are too old. I know they carry out regular maintenance checks but they are actually old.
ReplyDeleteGbamest! I avoid BA like plague.
DeleteThat is not true, am a regular ba flyer and I know their planes are mostly 777series or airbus340 which is relatively new.
DeleteBritish airways does not need the media before d flight is cancelled. The life of their passengers and cabin crew is of priority to them. We should thank God it happened on ground.
ReplyDeletethank God
ReplyDeleteThank goodness it was detected earlu.ki la maso.all is well
ReplyDeleteWe thank god it was dectected early or it will be another story
ReplyDeleteThank God
ReplyDeleteohhhhhhh
ReplyDeletePls Linda what phone no can we reach u on . I know u contributed to this tragedy being averted. I'm talking of a hotline, not ur personal line. Thanks
ReplyDeleteGood thing it wasn't a Dana flight...or the plane could well have been allowed to take off, had that been the case. Let's just hope that this level of security and scrutiny is applied across the board regardless of the carrier!
ReplyDeleteTanx God. D tine was discover if not. What would have happen nw. Any way jesus is our refuge in dis country.
ReplyDelete@Cute G.. The expression you are looking for is 'IN THE AIR' and not 'ON AIR'- This is not a radio show :P
ReplyDeleteAccidents are prone to happen but we can reduce its occurrence as it all boils down to our Airport authority as seriousness and proper checks should be done on these planes (them never even fit check our local ones finish sef) Thank God nothing happened,i have also been in a similar situation, ours was a virgin flight but in our case the engine started and went off during their usual check and did not start again. waited for over 3 to 4 hrs b4 the flight was cancelled still.
ReplyDeleteThank God 4 earlier detection b/4 taking off.

ReplyDeleteWe thank God.
ReplyDeleteBravo! We've not lost our dear people!
ReplyDeleteHave always felt ok with BA. A Dana would have taken off with one engine. God help Nigeria
ReplyDeleteThankful the fault was detected before takeoff. On a different note, the high level of semi-literacy in the country is very obvious in the poorly constructed tenses and poor spelling that characterizes most of the comments on this article and other articles on linda's blog...Nigerian Leaders please invest in the educational sector of our country especially at the primary and secondary school level...
ReplyDeleteThank God .
ReplyDeleteI was there this morning, actually saw the plane returning but did not know what actually happened. Guess they preferred to keep their name rather than the change.lol
ReplyDelete@Gina,the flight was cancelled! Didn't you read that part? Plus you didn't need to add LED to your CANCEL! Arrrgh! And you will claim to have gone to school! Thank me after you complete night school!
ReplyDeleteGENTS ,GUESS YOU GUYS ARE JOBLESS THIS MORNING.FOR GOD SAKE THIS IS A MONDAY, CAN SOME ONE JUST TRY TO ACHIEVE SOMETHING TODAY SO WHAT!!! WETIN CONCERN AGBERO WITH OVER LOAD.
ReplyDeleteIts a monday so freaking what??you think all LIBers slave for the govt or one private coy?some are on leave, some run their own busineses and some live in a different country so it means diff time zone.next time think before venting ur frustration on us by typing nonsense.
DeleteCOME TO THINK OF IT, HOPE ALL THE PASSENGERS ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF INCLUDING HOTEL ACCOMODATION. IF NOT THEY SHOULD BE READY TO APPEAR BEFORE THE NEXT HOPE UZODINMA COMMITTEE.
ReplyDeleteslow news day abi?????
ReplyDeleteHi Linda, just a quick note of correction - your sources were 'ON' a British Airways flight, not 'INSIDE' it. Likewise, they would have been 'ON' the plane, not 'INSIDE' the plane. That's correct grammar.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed day!
Newbie
Thank God oh! Anyways, BA has never had a crash in its entire history since it started almost a century ago. It won't start with Naija. Thank God the fault was detected before take off. God na your hand we dey
ReplyDeleteWhat about the B777 that crashed February of 2009 or was it 2010. The plane that crashed just short of the runway? Although that was due to ice, it was still a crash.
DeleteI bet some people almost started writing R..I..P
ReplyDeleteLinda you are becoming very annoying lately...you hardly post people's comments specially mine. What r you feeling like? Your readers made you who you are today so stop selecting comment specially when those comments are not abusive...deuces!
ReplyDeleteWhat's with all this grammatical errors? Linda u started this. Take your time oo
ReplyDeletelolzz niaja for u
ReplyDeleteSHOULDN'T WE ALL THANK GOD THAT IT STOPPED WORKING BEFORE TAKE-OFF TIME?
ReplyDeleteLet us thank God for all that happened, A plane can take-off and land with one engine to the nearest airport in this situation and I must commend them for putting safety first by aborting the flight,if it were a nigerian airline like dana and all them flying coffin owners that call themselves airline operators am sure they would have taken off and flown all the way not considering the safety of their oblivious passangers.#rubbishcountry
ReplyDeleteHaaaa, abeg ooo,I don buy my ticket already ooo.I no like this kin gist
ReplyDeleteThats why they have more than 1 engine @thatibo boy.......
ReplyDeleteThankGod o! This same thing hapnd 2 me in 2k10 omw 2 the US 4rm Amsterdam, same engine issues they even told us dat dey were goin 2 order d part 4rm frankfurt nd fix d plane but trust nigerians we made them chk us in2 a hotel nd rebook diff. Flights 4 us
