    1. @Anon 11.40 Sharrap dere!.....wot has jonatan done! Mtcheewww!...........................I have actually discussed this with my friends b4,..If u want to evaluate all these leaders by performance, then without doubt Obasanjo carries the day!...When he was in power,we villified him, but after having "Testicle less" leaders like Jonah its obvious Obj was the man!.....With good Antecedents , he even relinqished his military leadership to a civillian rule in 1979....................................Buhari would have done great, if he was given time...sadly he wasn't!............Asides from d fact that Abacha was a Crazy violator of Human rights, by performance he is still better dan Jonah!!............So by performance....Jonatan Ebele Badluck is d worst president we have had! Datsall

More so, I think majority of your audience are youth who may not even know who this people are based on the fact that they are still young or not have be given birth to day. Anyway General Muritala was my best Head of state

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow! Nna Linda nawa for u o, that's Abubakar Tafawa Balewa not Ahmadu Bello. Anyways, their performances can only be judged based on the circumstances or challenges they had to face during their regime, nonethless from what I have read since I wasnt born then, Murtala Mohammed seemed to be on the right track of things before he was killed. Gowon had a number of achievements of course except for the war which claimed a lot of innocent lives and sort of brought set back to the country. On a final note I think id go for obasanjo. He may be corrupt just like everyone of them here but he had and executed the boldness required of a leader of one of the most difficult nations to rule. At least that we sort of have reliable banks now, we owe that to him.(My opinion, im allowed to have one)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh and lest I forget the worst is obviously Jona!

  64. 1; Murtala Mohammed. I was young but till date my parents speak well of him. Only God knows what would have happened if he wasn't killed.
2; Muhammadu Buhari. WAI! There was discipline.
3; Olusegun Obasanjo; compared to GEJ, he's much better. He would have dealt with Jos and Boko Haram better.
4; Sani Abacha; was wicked with his killings. The only good thing I can say about him is that he refused to be a puppet of the USA. That was one of the reasons they colluded with "his" people to take him out.
5; IBB. Had a good team and compare where we are now to where we were then.
6; GEJ; if he can be President, you and I can be if only we agree to join Ogboni. Very dull.

    No ranks -
Ernest Shonekan; did nothing. He was holding forte for Abacha.
Gowon; I was a baby but they said he institutionalized corruption, was behind Murtala's death and the stories of the civil war aren't palatable.
    Nnamdi Azikiwe; another puppet.
Ahmadu Bello; was supposedly a good administrator but stories of tribalism trail him.
UMY; was too ill to do anything tangible.
Aguiyi Ironsi; you forgot your townsman LI. Was meant to be good but the North was angry with him. His assessment is for the oldies like our parents.

  66. Why are these two ex-Nigerian Presidents & their pics not listed:

1.) Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi (March 3, 1924, Umuahia - July 29, 1966, Lalupon, Oyo State) was Nigeria’s Head of State for only six months. He was in office from January 16, 1966 until he was overthrown and killed on July 29, 1966 by a group of northern army officers who revolted against the government

2.) General Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar (rtd.) (born June 13, 1942) is a Nigerian
general who was President of Nigeria from June 9, 1998 until May 29, 1999

  123. This post title :"Nigerian Leaders: Past and Present;Who's your best and worst?"is a misnomer.

The adjective "best" should never be used when describing Nigerian rulers. And the word "Leader" should never be associated with them.

If they were only one-tenth leaders rulers. Nigeria would have become an economic paradise today.

The closest to anything good is the first generation of Nigerian ruler-ship: Azikiwe, Balewa, Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello.

Had there ruler-ship not truncated by military rogues, they were the best chance Nigeria had to become an economic powerhouse

Comparing them to the current tribe of civilian ruler-ship is like comparing light and darkness.

The worst is the 5 military Head of state whose collective ruler-ship destroyed Nigeria. But the "worst" of the "worst" (if l may use that word) is Yakubu Gowon.

He ruled Nigeria when she was just a child - 6 years old - and ruled her for 9 years into teenager-ship
(Remember teenager-ship is a critical period when an one is most impressionable and develops mores that will dog ones live forever)

He laid the rotten foundation that destroyed Nigeria and established the template used by successive military regimes to drive Nigeria into a ditch.

Here's the content of his foundation:centralization of government, state creation, massive importation of all manner foreign goods, wasteful government spending (money is not a problem in Nigeria but how to spend it), white elephant projects, neglect of agriculture, fiscal unitarism, just to mention few.

Above all, his failure to bring to justice the people who massacred tens of thousands of Easterners( especially igbos) during his regime; his willful rejection of Aburi Accord which would have allowed Nigerians to develop at their own pace and speed;which would have prevented Biafran Civil war, and more importantly the current orgy of killings and massacres in Nigeria (including that which has turned his own state Plateau into a war zone) is hallmark of his position as Nigeria's "worst" of the "worst" ruler.

  133. Please put Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu here and rate him number 1.
He was a very educated leader that came from a privileged background and had nothing to gain but a lot to loose from the ideal of Biafra.

The leaders in your list all had personal agendas and resources to gain.

  136. The only good leader we had, had been Mohamadu Buhari. His regime knows what is meant to lead a Nation and they did it in their time(though very short period)just as coleman said they were dutiful and sincere. The other leaders in fact don't know what they are doing and are only selfish and nepotic. This led to the fall of the nation and the present decadence. It is only Fashola of Lagos who is following their trail. He knows what he's doing too. But as for other leaders:they never knew what they are doing. They are there only for themselves and not for the people. Many may not know this because they have not been born or little.Selfishness and greed is the way of life of the other ten leaders.

He shud not b blamed rather d past leaders who were dere before him... I wud not want to judge them but I can assure y'all dat gej has gud intentionz nd if we start havin @least electricity constantly!!!! 141. This one is easy now: Best is OBASANJO; worst is The Evil Genius a.k.a. ABACHA

    ReplyDelete
  142. Seriously, there are a lot of Muslims/ Hausa people on this list,
Majority of them are from the north while others Shonekan- west,Azikiwe- east and jonnaboy-south. I guess going forward the northerners should take a chill pill.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Sani Abacha followed by Sani Abacha. As bad as Nigeria got.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Goodluck Jonathan worse than Abacha!! That's how you know that people are young o. When Abacha died, Nigerians threw a party...he was that bad. All this occupy Nigeria stuff...Abacha would have ended it with one massive bomb and continued on as if nothing happened.

    ReplyDelete
  145. My Best is GEJ, I choose him base on the fact that he tolerate all sought. He carried everybody along, and also listen to peoples opinion. Worst are Buhari, Obj, Ibb.

    ReplyDelete
  146. hmm.. d best and d worst?
    gowon sold bakassi...

sonekan did not have time, probably wud have looted more than d rest...

    i know nothing about murhitala...

yaradua came up wit amnesty but did nothing 2 curb corruption...

    i know not tafawa balewa...

gej is very busy supporting and promoting corruption and he is apparently talented in so doimg...

obj almost sold nigeria just days before he handed over...

babangida in my mind is responsible for the flourishing corruption in d country...

i know not azikiwe but i don't entirely trust him...

abacha can best be described as a murderer and thief...

buhari 2 me is d closest we have 2 a non thieving president...

so 4 lack of a better person i wud say buhari is the best, abacha and babangida - bracket last, gej is second 2 d last and mostly corrupt individuals in the middle.

  148. Proud Nigerian.25 April 2013 at 15:17

My dear Linda, it will be nice if we know what happened when this leaders ruled Nigeria. I am not trying to make you an history teacher!!! The truth is that some of these leaders ruled Nigeria when some of your readers were not yet born. So their judgement will not be fair, not because they are biased but because they do not know. For me, best leader goes to Late General Murtala Mohammed. I remember that I never saw generators during his rule before he was assassinated by Dimka. I never heard of armed robbers or kidnappers then too. We could run around and play ball in front of the house. We could go to the river to fetch water without fear of rape or being kidnapped. My worst is Babangida. He devalued Naira and we have never recovered from the effect of currency devaluation.Who can believe that Naira was stronger than dollars before? Today Naira is almost 155 to a dollar. Nigeria is still trying to recover from the mess the military rulers caused in Nigeria. My dear Linda, please after this exercise, let us know where the descendants/families of these leaders are [dead or alive]. It will be interesting to know.

  149. Gowon ---- 10% (The Major problem of dis Nation is cause he didn't allow biafia to go)
OBJ ------ 95% (believe me this is the best person democracy can be handed over to, He save US ALL)
    ZIK ---- 90%
    Muritala ----- 70%
    Buhari ------- 90%
    IBB ------------ 40%
    Abacha ------ 60%
Shonekan --- 5% (too short to acknowlegde his impact)
Abubakar --- 75% (handover power for democracy)
    Yaradua ----- 75%
    GEJ ----------- 50%

My best president ever is OBJ .... While d worst president and will remain worst is Gowon.

  151. The best is Gowon and Worst Abacha....eish!!!

    ReplyDelete
  152. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Gowon are my definite best. Worst has to be Abacha and Goodluck the former was of the two worst was a dictator and the other a weakling weird how the combination of both could have made a better leader for Nigeria... (Note: All the others mentioned were bad too but lesser evils of the worst)

    ReplyDelete
  153. How many people knew what happened over 40yrs ago on this blog?Abegee, but if we want to face the fact and be sincere to ourselves, till date,OBJ remains the best president Nigeria has ever had.He has brought modern day advancement to Nigeria.I could remember in early 90s,GSM was like luxury but now everybody has it.Including the establishment of EFCC.He brought sanity to NAFDAC,CBN to mention but few. Before he came to power in 1999,most lecturers were living in abject poverty.I could remember,at U.I a professor used to come to campus with a bicycle. But when he came to power the story changed.I dont think i ve idea of the worst president, but with what am experiencing at the moment in Nigeria.i have no choice than to run with NO SHOE to any neighbouring countries...So i giv the worst to Btother Jonah!!PHCN INCREASE BILL BUT NO INCREASE IN ELETRICITY SUPPLY.PRICE OF FUEL INCREASE NO INCREASE SALARY.NO GOOD ROADS.I CANT EVEN GO TO NORTH(BOKO HARAM)OR NIGER DELTA(MILLIATNT),EAST(KIDNAPPING),WEST(ARM ROBBERS EVERYWHERE)ABEG..BRO JONAH WE ON TOP OF THE SITUATION.

U need to learn history about different types of government.

  173. from d list above,if we must be sincere with ourselves, jonathan is nt as bad as d likes of abacha, buhari, gowon, obj, and babaginda.d likes of yar'adua and azikwe sits above d rest for sure.imagine how obj sent out soldiers to masaccre a whole village in south south for which timaya spoke off(dat act was done without due consideration of ONE NIGERIA.if jonathan decides to sweep out d notherners(boko harams home)he will b termed "wicked".for me security is his biggest challenge which didn't come as a surprise to me cos babaginda, atiku and co never supported his government,so to think GEJ is d worst is an unjust assessment.he has done nothing worse dan others.post my comment ooo

    ReplyDelete
