Rape now attracts life imprisonment in Nigeria

The House of Representatives yesterday Tuesday March 5th approved life imprisonment for any person convicted of rape. They also approved a minimum of 20 years without an option of fine for persons convicted of gang raping someone.

The bill, which was sponsored by Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also approved 25 years imprisonment for any person who attempted to use chemical, biological or any harmful liquid on another person. (e.g pouring acid on anyone).

The bill also approved 4 years in jail or a fine not more than N200,000 or both for any person convicted of performing female circumcision and general mutilation or engaging someone to carry it out. Aiding female circumcision attracts N100, 000 or two years in jail or both.

Do you think this would make rapists stay away? No. No. No. Nigeria needs to be reformed and overhauled. The police department; the banking sector; aviation and the political sector.
Why don't you imprison politicians who are corrupt? Why are those ones left out?
Hahaha. I'm having a laugh at this BS. Everything in Nigeria needs to be reformed. Start from there; instead of making stupid rules so you would look tough.

  20. There is already a provison in the criminal code Act 1990 prohibiting rape also with life imprisonment as punishment (section 357 -358 criminal code). So what exactly is the need of the same law being enacted? A simple research would have suffice. This shows her imcompetence as well in trying to further women's rights.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hope this helps to curb the vice of rape in this country, and that the law will stand for or against people irrespective of their social status.

  25. This is nothing new. Rape has always been a crime carrying life imprisonment sentence in the Criminal code. Any legislator should be aware of this. This is just Abike's way of being looked at as the Champion for women's right. Too poor, Mrs Dabiri-Erewa.

Who knows if u ar a perpetual rapists. God has already caught u n ur cohorts. Mr lawmaker, since u sabi, why haven't u make an impact on ur own accord. Yes, she has always been a champion for women's rights, if u have a problem with that, go hug a transformer...it's the likes of u that hate successful women. Torso. She will continue to be the champion. Whom God has given wisdom no coward like u can intimidate. Rapist, ur time is up. Hehehehheeee. Anumanu, anuofia, mpi, ewu. 2. I didn't want to reply this because it would be a complete waste of my time but I couldn't help but notice how daft and senseless you are. How does stating a proven fact equate to me being a rapist? Or you just can't handle the fact that your dear Woman rights champion, Abike has decieved and taken you for a ride with an already existing law? Take heart dear, ignorance must be bliss for you. I'll leave you to your sorrows.

      Delete
    3. Anon 8:39. But the person is just bringing to your attention the fact that a similar law is already in place and Abike merely copied it.this means she didn't do anything innovative. Why so much pain, anger and disgust over a vaild point? I don't know whether to say you're just a bitter person or a daft human being who can't reason well without throwing fists. Too sad. You should perhaps evaluate your life, know your direction. I know your life is useless as it is but still there is room for change.

    4. We both know this has absolutely nothing to do with hating Abike. You're just sad because you a stark illitrate who just has an opportunity to comment on this blog and type whatever trash comes out of your silly head. If you are saddened by the fact that I'm way better than your entire existence, why don't you do yourself a favor and go to school. If you are indeed educated, then your parents just wasted their money on you. You should have learnt a trade instead. Real pity though.

  28. A brilliant one i most say. Hope u guys know dat married couples i.e either of d spouse can be convicted for rape if any1 of d spouse does not consent to having sex but was forcefully engage into it. Again, if all d element dat constitute rape can be established d spouse who committed it wld be sentence. Husbands be careful not to risk going to jail under d guise dat she is my wife so i can do wat i like. However, jurispudence of rape as also be subject to test if truly a man can be rape. Is it possible 4 a man to be rape? D main question are: can u force a man to hav erection? Even wen u point a gun on a mans head cld fear make him have erection? Really cld a woman rape a man? Practical test as prove dat mens erection comes from d mind so dere is no way a man can be forcefully be rape bcos even at gun point fear alone will kill his mind set n at best release sperms wit out erection. So 4 man to claim he was rape by a woman n had erection during d cause of rape goes to show dat he has bin thinking of having sex. Share ur view n lets know wat u think. No insult pls.

  99. Ok, so this woman decides to pass a bill of a law already enacted in 1990, hmmmmm......everybody commending her effort out of ignorance look stupid, sorry to say. What about the polictians/people in authority who are corrupt and loot/misappropriate public funds, steal money from pensioners etc? What bill have you passed for those offenders? In my own opinion, they should be sentenced to life imprisonment without an option of fine, subject them to HARD LABOUR with little food for the first 30 years and then CHOP OFF their legs and hands and leave them to rot in jail! They should die a painful death for all the pain they have inflicted on Nigerians. Death by hanging or firing squad is just too little!

  105. Nice one! Good innitiative by Hon Abike Dabiri.....We have to put a stop to violence against women in our society. A bill against domestic violence and spousal abuse should also be passed into law as a criminal act because 50 per cent of Nigerian women are been battered by their husbands at one time or the other and an end must come to it.

  106. Why are you Nigerians not mindful of the use of words. you all claim to be so well educated but yet you cannot express yourself without being abusive - using such words as fools, stupid.
And if these laws were never effected how are people suppose to know they were in the constitution anyway...half ass law students!

  107. Well it isnt as if rapists got a bag of cookies b4, the problem has always been ENFORCEMENT, I read on here that child abusers are meant to pay the hospital treatment of their victims, wait for test(sperm) results to confirm b4 they are brought to justice giving them plenty of time to escape or pay the family off.!!!!!

And despite the video evidence, what happened to the Abia rapists??????????

  110. How can someone "LMAO" (laugh their ass off) at the issue of rape or attempted rape..? Has social media so dumbed down your ability to think and/or empathise with rape victims? what is funny about this issue? We as people honestly need to wake up to the plight of our fellow citizens and not just see this site (or the internet) as a forum for leaving 'smart' remarks or spewing absolute nonsense.
Issues like this(the ills of society) should make us all sit up and think!!I weep for humanity!
To th story- Brilliant, if it would actually be followed through.

  112. Hon. Dabiri, this law already exists but if you're only trying to get it enforced then I applaud your efforts. And why does gang-rape carry a lesser sentence??? On a lighter note, have been spotting a lot of 'englishes' in the comments today. My favourite is 'rappist' instead of rapists ..totally funny
