Genevieve dropped from Chimamanda Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun

Genevieve Nnaji's small part in the big screen adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel “Half of a Yellow Sun” has been cut out from the finished film. It wasn't just Genevieve's scenes that were cut from the movie, a few other characters from the book didn't appear in the movie. Sources in the know say the producers may have cut Genevieve from the movie because her character wasn't important to the story and was dragging the storyline unnecessarily. Other characters didn't appear because there was not much time to tell everyone's story. Genny may appear in a scene or two but it will be very insignificant. Genevieve played the role of Ms Adebayo, a professor who develops a flirtatious relationship with her colleague Mr Odenigbo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Half of a Yellow Sun features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dominic Cooper, Anika Noni Rose and Thandie Newton. Produced by Andrea Calderwood and directed by Biyi Bandele. The book centers on the Nigerian civil war and was published in 2006.

Genevieve might not even know she's been cut from the movie! Geez Linda, you and amebo sef! Lol

  21. I suspect the producers didn't find her acting too impressive, it's not Hollywood where mediocrity is accepted as great acting, this is for international viewing moreover Genevieve is very short and maybe the producers didn't find her as a selling act. Very Sad though. I had hoped she will leap to the international scene after this cause the producers did last king of Scotland which hit forest Whittaker out there.

    1. Well said...but sadly mediocrity is the order of the day in this part of the world where people are celebrated for unnecessary and random antics like buying a car and prostitution by your so called "nollywood stars"

I heard from sources who actually were on set that she acted like a complete diva and was drama from beginning to end. came in with a massive entourage and was making demands that were ridiculous.! her acting was apparently mediocre at best and the real stars were shocked at her behaviour. they all put it down to insecurity.

  28. Really. So they have started again. The Novel was written by a Nigerian and yet they don't deem it fit that our nollywood star should appear in the film. I see discrimination over again. Its either we sign a petition or we boycott the movie. We will keep signing that petition until we are HEARD.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No dear its not discrimination , its strictly based on merit, hard work and talent
Did you ever consider the fact that maybe your "nollywood stars" aren't good enough for the big stage and maybe they are over hyped by themselves and you their fans?
      Just saying

      Delete
    2. Why generalize? There are many in Nollywood who are better than Genevieve . Only the hype and p.r make them go for who they want!

  29. DAmn! LOL
Well, that's what happens when you have a "waka pass" Genevieve acting with real actors; you cut out the scrubs!!
Her Igbotish english accent wasn't important to the story and was dragging the storyline unnecessarily. Btw, Genevieve is not good being flirty on the screen...she is too dry and lacks that sensual passion. Genevieve is more like a housewifey not a flirt!!!
    I'm just saying...........

    ReplyDelete

    1. A fool you are for the igbotic accent comment, is that supposed to be an insult. Its time ignorant fools like you start to realize that having an accent is not a crime; your accent is your heritage, it is your community and last I checked her last name is Nnaji, not Smith. Come to think of it, since we are been tribal; pls name me one Nigerian or should I dare to say Yoruba. I suspect you are Yoruba; who grew up in Naija that does not have the accent of a Nigerian? And that includes you. Idiot

  30. From the book, Ms Adebayo was older than Genny. I wonder why Genny was even used for that role in the 1st place. I've said it since the cast of this movie was announced, that Genny will play 'Olanna' better than Thandie Newton or Anika Noni-Rose. Both of them are very good, & are my girls too, but its a typical Igbo woman role that we're talking about here & not just any black african woman role. I guess Dominic Cooper will be Mr. Richard. Anyway Genny or no Genny, I still can't wait for the movie. xx

I knew she was heading for a total downfall when she blabbed that she hadn't read the novel, maybe to to imply this classic novel wasn't that huge, Big fool! look at how she blew a chance of a lifetime to shine, it will take a huge triple liver for another top producer to come for her again, this is a huge dent for her for life. This is a lesson for all these talentless screaming nollywooders

Oh No. That woman has paid her dues joor, and in my opinion has held it down since the early 90s even before the genny's yet still working very hard! Haba! 83. Who says they should use an all Nigerian cast? Are you well at all? So the whole world can see hot messes such as the likes of Tonto Dike abi? The difference between this and Harry Potter was that J.K Rowling insisted that they use British actors. I don't know what the deal is with Chimamanda but if they asked her and she didn't object to foreign actors I can't say I blame her. Genevieve is a good actress in her own right (I've seen much worse Hollywood actors)and I think she actually has the potential to make me forget I'm watching Genevieve and get into the character she portrays but she's not there yet. As far as I'm concerned only two actresses have the potential to do that - Joke Silva and Bimbo Akintola. Bimbo would have been good for the role. And if Genevieve really told Chimamanda that she didn't have time to read the book of the movie she's suppose to be in that she must be slightly high.

At the world stage of mega movies, it doesn't matter a thing if your role is just to say hi for a second, what matters to the spielbergs and paramount pictures of this world is the way you interpreted the Hi, what is interesting and catchy about you to make their target audience remember you for life. Research research resaearch! She had chi Amanda at her doorstep, in Nigeria I mean, why didn't this failure of a woman speaker see her everyday to find out from her the ms. Adebayo chimamanda had in mind when she wrote that masterpiece, she would have told her, alas no talent base and I too know nailed her, this was not nollywood but the great Hollywood. Check ou talents with beauty struggling to be heard on the streets of Tinseltown. I see them every tine I visit and I marvel, I doubt if any Nigerian can make out there for now and years to come, thatbis why Femi kuti is in a classic class of all time, talent speaks anytime without noise or media hype. 97. Yeah Genevieve wouldn't know because it is not true. And those rubbing their hands in glee I hope you bow your heads in shame when you find out the story is false.

  98. See hating ooo! We should learn to appreciate our people oooo nollywood but not be there yet but at least we are trying! All this assumption that genny is rude is just hearsay cos I have met her n she was nice! Also, she started acting at the age of 6 so get ur facts right! Appreciate ppl n stop hating!

  100. In as much as she's a good actress, this is hollywood and they thrive on perfection. Its a pity she was cut out of some scenes. Im sure she was taken initially because she's a Nigerian actress and they were just been considerate based on that.

  101. SHE WAS ACTUALLY CAUGHT COS HER STYLE OF ACTING WAS TOO NOLLYWOOD AND THEY HAD DIFFICULTY EDITING HER PART COS HER ACTING WAS DEVOID OF THE RIGHT EMOTIONS REQUIRED OF THE CHARACTER. IT WASN'T UP TO HOLLYWOOD STANDARD AND PRODUCERS DIDN'T WANT A MOVIE THAT WOULD BRING DOWN THE A-LISTS HOLLYWOOD ACTORS BRAND FEATURED ALONG SIDE HER, AND ALSO THEY WANT TO TAKE THE FILM TO FESTIVALS AND TO THE OSCARS.THEY ARE NO ACTORS IN NOLLYWOOD JUST EXHIBITIONIST.SHAMEFUL

  103. Read every single comment and its funny people are calling Genevieve an overrated actress. That young lady is arguably responsible for the huge audience Nollywood amassed from 1998-2004. She changed the face of the industry to get all this hate from faceless cowards? God forbid this African young legend of a woman be treated like Michael Jackson. The wickedness of man won't prevail in her life.
