Corp Member constructs Corpers Lodge in Kaduna State

Monica Onuoha, an Abia State Indigene posted to Kaduna State during the Batch A 2012/2013 NYSC year, constructed a Corpers Lodge worth over 5 million naira and she did this with donations from Northerners. Amazing, right?

Below is a story from someone who attended the commissioning of the lodge...
Miss Monica Onuoha used this one year youth service to make impact on the lives of her fellow corp members and the Sabon Gaya community of Chikun Local Government. It was an emotional commissioning on Jan 31st, 2013 when Ms. Onuoha stood with the State Coordinator to cut the ribbon, formally opening an 8 room lodge for Corp Members at Government Secondary School Sabon Gaya, Kaduna. There was much joy on the faces of the NYSC officials and the LG officials who were in attendance. Some of her donors were on hand that day as well.
See the rest after the cut...

Miss Onuoha, an Abia State indigene began the project a month after being posted to her PPA. She shared her experiences with Corp Members, the press and the general public present at the commissioning. One thing that stood out to the crowd was her willingness to bravely knock on doors to solicit funds, get contractors for the project and actually complete the project. She also mentioned that apart from living in a different place, she has now learnt the basics of building a structure (Skill Acquisition!!).

Due to the construction of the Lodge, GSS Sabon Gaya will have a comfortable place for Corp Members to lay their hands. This will greatly benefit the students.

Ms. Onuoha also completed other community service projects during her service year: a skills acquisition programme for women in her host community, donation of school books, donation of hospital materials, and afforestation.

As a corp member, I was inspired by Ms. Onuoha's selflessness and courage to execute such a massive project.
I hope to do something (even on a small scale) to make impact on my host community as well. I was also touched by the hands that were on deck throughout the project. She did not fail to speak highly of her fellow Batch A Corp Member posted to the school, a person who acted as her right hand man throughout the building process; selfless team work at its finest!

Kudos Monica Onuoha and all those completing CDS projects in their host communities.

    7. PC, "this" can't be followed with "are" since "this" is singular and "are" is plural. U should have said "this is one of the ........" So learn to construct ur sentences since u are always commenting on LIB.

A group which will go everywhere soliciting for contracts. But here only her dey take d glory meaning she went on her own to do the bidding. Only god knows d inside story. We see people like that everyday, go getters pursuing their own agenda. At least job don sure for her, maybe in her state. They can put in good words for her anywhere she wants to work. Even cocaine business and kidnapping is "hard work". Meanwhile how come other corp members who do good for their state find no way to your blog. 16. ok, this is quite a laudable accomplishment but it is rather selfish and not leader-worthy for her to print her name solely on the building. i am pretty sure she got help from other people, being a true leader is carrying everybody along. she could have given credit to the entire corps and in smaller print state her name as initiator or whatever. this is not leadership quality whatsoever.

  43. Anon 4:01, haba this is why we are not moving forward. I can vouch for the fact that she worked hard to achieve this project through honest solicitation of funds. Naija people see any form of progress as meaning something else had to happen for it to work. Let us use these stories, Monica's, the Dr. in Abuja that built that clinic and others to boost our own resolve for community service.

As for those asking why she didn't start at home. She was posted somewhere, saw a need and filled the need. Naija is her home. Those of you that are in your "homes" what have you done? When she gets home, she will probably fill a need as she knows now that she can do whatever she sets her mind to.

And just in case someone asks...I know her closely, this is why I feel the need to respond. Please let us celebrate others and you will be celebrated one day as well.

    Peace and Love!

  58. For the person talkin about how igbos were killed during the civil war(biafran war),go and read nigerian history before u start passing biased and sentimental comments.the first coup ever staged in nigeria was organised by igbo army men and they killed mostly northern leaders including the then premier of the north(tafawa balewa) and a couple of yoruba leaders, not one igbo leader lost his life in that coup.after the war,an igbo army officer took over power in nigeria.and he proceeded to promote up to eight igbo men in the military before any other tribe was considered.the northerners clearly sensing that the coup was all part of a grand igbo scheme, retaliated by staging a counter coup and overthrew the igbo military head of state.that's what sparked off the civil war.igbos thot they could do without nigeria coz dey thot dey had oil,but the oil belongs to the niger deltans and they hate being called igbo.it was indegenes of rivers state who snitched on the igbos coz they didn't wanna be in a country with the igbos who will take their oil and still dominate them#this bit of info isn't my imagination,I paid attention in history class so that I can really knw wat happened and not be bias or sentimental* thank me later

I am not surprised at the hateful comments. My fellow Igbo corpers, do not expect gratitude from other Nigerians. They would kill you at the slightest opportunity for being Igbo. Look at the amount of lies written here in the name of history lesson! We must continue to do good to show the world the superiority of our Christian values of the hatefulness of the Nigerian spirit. When we take our case for the establishment of Biafra to the world, the world would support us for our good works.
    God bless Biafra.
