Wrong choice of words from a man of God

The priest at St Luke Anglican Church, Akwakuma, Owerri, Rev. Ogechi Ofurum blames women for wearing tight clothes and tempting men...

Rev Ogechi Opurum said:
“The type of skimpy clothes ladies wear nowadays is appalling. Clothes that children of 10 and 11 years wear have now become the fashion of adults of 18 years and above. Those clothes are so tight on them that every part of their body shows, thereby provoking men to force themselves on them."
Is he justifying rape? There are other ways he could have made his point. Rape is a sadistic act and there's absolutely no excuse for it.

  1. Oh please! There is no justification for rape. A matured man should be able to control his sexual urge not to turn into rape.

    3. No Linda, he is NOT justifying rape.

He has only made mention of what could stir up (provoke) a man's sexual desire and thus possibly lead to a man without self-control raping a woman.

I don't think it is right to imply what a person hasn't said.

    4. Linda, what if I say:

"Some people just leave cash lying about the house carelessly, therefore allowing their house-help to steal from them"

Does it mean I have justified the house-help stealing or am I trying to caution the folks that leave their money carelessly?

  13. So in countries where women cover head to toe and get raped still, what's the cause? Devil? That priest should be brought in for questioning. A lawless man is a lawless man. Tight clothes or otherwise!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Linda your getting offended for nothing....plus ur assumptions don't make any sense.
The man was simply trying to pass across the point that you shouldn't wear such revealing stuff..whether it is right or wrong some women get raped for that and its in your own interest to heed nobody is justifying anything.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 'Anyone who justifies rape is a potential rapist' I couldn't have said it better myself. We live in a society that blames women for an act perpetrated by men. Its disgusting. Fully clothed women have been raped too. That's why men keep raping and getting away with it, they never get blamed for the act.

  20. I'd say dress to attract not distract . It totally doesnt justify rape cos obviously nobody can justify rape buh if females of these days can atleast dress decent it can help atleast. Any female who dresses to distract n attracts rape upon herself then she has herself to blame ,My opinion francisruff.blogspot.com

    1. U're really stupid 4 saying that!!! How do you know that? And who gave you the right to say such nonsense about a man of God? True, I know there's no justification why a man should rape a woman, well dressed or not but he's not saying its right. He's just trying to make a point & advice women cos the truth is, the way a woman dresses can actually attract rape.

  33. I sincerely dont think he is justifying rape at at. Rape is evil and any rapist is an animal and should be dealt with. However it takes two to tango. Some ladies dress in a very provocative way that should also be corrected. A lady who walks on d street exposing her body invites trouble, because there r lots of sick and phyco men out there who will mean it for something else. I believe that is what d Rev Father was trying to say.

Some rape cases were not caused by provocative dressing. A rapier will rape regardless. But a little caution in d way some ladies dress will help too. They call it fashion, but its madness. I HOPE THE GOVERNMENT CAN PASS A STIFFER PENALTY AGAINST RAPISTS. Together we should do what we hv to do, to stop this evil.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Linda the pastor is not justifying rape, but telling ladies to be decent in their dressing. Ladies feel they are hot and beautiful when they dress half naked, which is not so. Beauty of a lady comes from within.

  46. Our men in naija have very babaric attitudes towards sex. We women have to stand up and fight against this babarism by changing our own attitudes. We can not support this thinking anymore no matter how 'holy' you think you are. It is this same reason that child molesters use. They even rape old women as well. We have to stand against this now for the sake of our daughters

DRESS DECENTLY.

  52. We all live with the assumption that everyone around us are normal. This is a grievous mistake we shouldn't make. Dressing in an indesent manner can lead to catastrophic consequences. 89. Rape does occur in Sharia countries where women are over modestly dressed up. I don't see skimpy clothes to compare with what ladies wore in the 60s and 70s. 90. Linda I don't think his statement justifies rape. Lewd dressing is provocative, let us be realistic. It does not mean the rapist is justified by any means. They are both crimes - dressing slutty and rape, non justifies or exonerates the other. And i am a woman.

Linda this is the first time that i am disappointed by your story. The priest was never in anyway justifying rape, he only made it known that indecent exposure by ladies are one of the causes of rape. Which is a very simple exampke to present to people living in the east especially owerri where you have plenty of youths cos of the number of higher institutions in owerri town. Pls rephrase your story or better still remove it. Dont rubbish a man of God just to make stories. Ensure you publish this or you remove the story.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Linda stop making issues of ntin , the man is simply telling his congregations not to go abt naked. He nver said rage is ok buh admonishing his audience to desist from wearing procative dresses shakina

    ReplyDelete
  109. Linda shutup.... D Rev is correcting and u re calling him Rapist...Men re move by what we c.... When a lady is showing her V shape is totally an abuse to men as far as am concerning...Pls Ms Linda Ikeji is dere any way u can call what is BAD if not to Pronounce it BAD.. So u want BAD to b painted good or sweet before expressing it BAD... This conductor ought to b ur friend cause during a fight he said 'Sir re mad, pls sir u re very studip'... What is not Good is not good there is no other name for it.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I'm sure the congregation both men and women nodded mmmhh..so how many women have raped bare chested men? If you are a perv, then you are a perv.

    ReplyDelete
  111. All i can say on this one is that i like your guts.....

    ReplyDelete
  112. That is a disgusting statement and unChrist like. It can as well be your fault for been robbed because you bought a flashy car or something stupid like that. This is really irresponsible of a man in such a position and no wonder Nigeria is so lawless.

    ReplyDelete
  113. This is so pointless, rape has been around before the clothes women wear now. Even in the days of the Bible where the women were modest rape was recorded. A rapist is simply a coward and disgusting bastard and God will surely punish them all. I'am so disappointed in this man!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Thank you Linda, by their words you shall know them! If yoou can try and justify rape then that says a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Dnt usually make comments on bloggs but reading through the above comments by the man of God,he seems to be saying the truth & stating the obvious, what i dnt understand is why YOU are connecting it with him justifing rape?except there is more to the comment you ave not posted,i dnt think its right to twist peoples statements like that!!!!pls clarify for better understanding.

    ReplyDelete
  116. well, truly dia is no justification for rape, but den d MOG is right!!! Until we start tellin ourselves d truth about indecent dressing instead of advocating freedom to dress however we please, d issue of rape would remain as rampant as d air we breath

    ReplyDelete
  117. Actually there is nowhere in the pastor's statement where he mentioned rape. Even some women share this point. "You are what you wear" isn't an adage coined out of lustful thoughts,it simply describes that any one who presents himself/herself in a particular way would be judged to be that way.

Being judgmental isn't good, and we are all icebergs. But responsible fashion has been thrown out of the window thanks to a media that glorifies are tainted form of beauty.

I don't like talking about rape, because the underground stats about those who have been sexually assaulted is quite alarming. It is extremely wicked to force a woman to have sex with you. But how many women have been forced into having sex by men who use their money, power, position, blackmail etc.. to buy the consent of a woman.

We must protect our women, they are givers and takers of life. Their bodies are capable of giving life, joy, pain and regret. Their heart carries all the virtues that make or mar the lives of everyone connected to them, even their seeds. They are the soil upon which our future is planted. Its fertility and climate will frame the very essence of our tomorrow.

Protection from damaging the female folk just like protection from a terminal disease must be wholesome. We must create a society that actively stands up for the female folk. But heaven helps those who help themselves. The same goes for the woman.

    truth is blunt and bitter!

  121. Linda learn to read carefully and understand before implying statements made by people...all he is just trying to say is that women provoke men to rape them which is basically true.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Linda, it's as though you don't read well. Does it look like he supports rape?

    ReplyDelete
  131. USELESS REASONING. a rapist is a rapist. you dont see EVERY guy raping any woman they see who's wearing skimpy clothes.. and there were still rapists when it was the norm for a woman to be covered completely. Some men are just dogs disguised as priests and pastors. religion will eventually be our downfall because it promotes the loss of rational thought, and expects us to put reasoning in the hands of illiterates and literates with emotional issues from years of praying to a god that nobody has seen

    ReplyDelete
  132. Linda u can say dat again

2ND: ITS NOT ANYONE WHO JUSTIFIES RAPE THAT IS A POTENTIAL RAPIST. IF THAT IS THE CASE, ANYONE WHO JUSTIFIES ABORTION IS AN ABORTIONIST.

3RD: YES, WOMEN DRESS PROVOCATIVELY NOWADAYS FOR REASONS BEST KNOWN TO THEM BUT I THINK MAJORITY OF THEM ARE DEMON POSSESSED.

4TH: YES YOU ARE RIGHT, DRESSING PROVOCATIVELY DOES NOT MEAN ONE SHOULD BE HARASSED, ABUSED OR RAPED.

5TH: SOME WHO CLAIM THAT SUCH BEHAVIOR BRINGS RAPISTS TO THEM IS FACTUALLY RIGHT. THERE ARE SO MANY PSYCHOS WALKING AROUND AND IT IS SAFER FOR A WOMAN TO DISCOURAGE THE RAPIST INSTEAD OF ENCOURAGING THEM THROUGH BAITING AND HOPING THAT HE MAY BE CAUGHT. THE TRUTH IS HE MAY NOT BE CAUGHT AND THE WOMAN MAY BE DEAD BY THE END OF THE DAY. IT IS LIKE SOMEONE PREACHING THE GOSPEL IN A BOKO HARAM INFESTED PLACE LIKE ZAMFARA AND WHEN HE IS ATTACKED AND BEHEADED, YOU WILL COME AND SAY THERE IS NO JUSTIFICATION FOR BEHEADING HIM. BETTER STAY SAFE THAN LATE. DRESS PROPERLY.

  152. A lot of women who are raped are fully clothed.
While there is truth to what he said, the problem here is that many times, we get culture mixed in with talk, and it affects the output, so there is a huge disconnect with what was thought and what is actually said.

The best thing for the Rev to have done was to said this, and at the same time, spoken against rape.

Many women are raped by people close to them, close friends, and family members even.

There is no reason behind rape, and any man here saying so, please I pray that no woman close to you is ever raped. Whether by armed robbers, while "safely" at home, or by someone that you know.

Also, Linda be mindful of wat u post pls. Bless!!

  156. There has been rapists from time immemorial and guess what, rapists aren't going no where. So prevent your self from being a victim of rape by dressing appropriately.
It is as clear as ice water and that was what the pastor was trying to get across.
You can delude your self by reasoning that because rapists still rape people who were full clothed; you will start going around partially nude[ with boobs and booty staring at every man on the street]. If and when you are raped, you will have no one to blame except your sorry dirty minded ass and the creep that raped you. Never the less, i pray that the creep used a condom on you, so that he doesn't catch anything from you.
    End of story.

  157. WHEN IT COMES TO SEX, SOME CREEPS CANT CONTROL IT. SO LADIES, PREVENT OR MINIMIZE YOUR CHANCES OF BEING RAPED BY DRESSING APPROPRIATELY.

    ReplyDelete
  158. @ikunkun you are a frustrated lady. I bet you didnt read the story at all. You opened your mouth to call a priest a half baked pastor? Ask yourself this question (thats if you understand english), what did the priest say? And as for you linda, how come you always dress decently? I bet the priest just gave an example of possible consequences of indecent dressing by ladies. Linda, why didnt you get his whole message (sermon)?

    ReplyDelete
  159. People like him give justification for sexual assault and rape. We ladies see a lot of manly skin even penis(an average man pees in public: so ladies have to contend with that image all the time) daily and we don't go about raping or sexually harassing men due to their nakedness. I can understand if a lay man makes this statement but a man of God *i weep*
