Shameful: See inside the Nigerian Police College, Lagos

I have no words to describe this, but thankfully they say pictures tell a thousand words. This is the deplorable state of the Nigeria Police College, Ikeja, Lagos...the first police college in the country, built in 1940.

Channels TV exposed the deplorable conditions of the dormitories at the training college where recruits spend months to get training to become police officers. The condition of the hostels, the bathrooms, and even the way they feed is so shameful. N150 daily meal allowance. There has been no major development at the college since it was built in the 40's except for a few renovations. They even still use type-writer. The College was built for 700 students, but now has 2,554 trainees. See for yourself after the cut...

Now watch the video

  27. why won't they be ruthless ,rent out guns to armed robbers and collect bribe…the people vested with protecting our lives look at the deplorable conditions they are living?
they are a victim of the corrupt inspector generals and other bosses, the minister for police affairs they are victims of armed robbers and upon all we average nigerians will turn around to curse and abuse them…in 2003 when i was in nigeria on holidays i had an argument with a policemen and they tok me to the police station ostensibly to punish me by delaying me while i was there i saw first one and then two and then more policemen with buckets of water going to bath under the cover of darkness in a corner of the compound no covering or anything..

i was so pissed off at their conditions and while interviewing them they said they are transferred from their bases but not given any allowance for accommodation so they end up sleeping in the cells and offices and then bath under cover of darkness in plain sight

  55. Seriously shameful. Though I am not sure why it's just coming out. I hadn't been back to Nigeria for 10 years, when I landed and was on the way to the island we drove past the building and the squalid state of the building from the road was blatantly obvious. I wonder if dignitaries are driven that way on the way back from the airport. What an advert for Lagos and the country. The next time Jay-Z and Beyonce are in town the government should take them on a tour of the campus, i'm sure they will be impressed.
Those poor recruits are supposed to graduate and enforce the law....and then we wonder why they are all corrupt, it's part of their training, nurture.
Even the feeding stations at Unicef refugee camps are beter stocked and equipped.
All this whilst our leaders and elite gallivant the world showing off with expensive cars and houses, flying first class. It just shows where our priorities are, people would rather spend on superficial crap than give back to the community they live in, and then they wonder why they get car jacked and robbed in their houses.......doh!!!!!!!

  78. So lets ACT and shame our leaders! Wat I suggest is dat LIB readers come togeda, donate money and renovate dis police college as an example, make sure it's aired on news channels and show our government dat we r ready to do something instead of just sitting down and just raining abuses while waiting for Linda to give us more news...? Wat says we? I'm serious about dis, it won't cost much believe me. If 300 of us donate like 1,000 naira at least each we r talking 300,000 naira already and I believe some of us can do better, wen we r done with it we can ask our government to follow suit....we can even go ahead and do dis with a Hospital. My people for us to bring change to Nigeria we need to start d changes ourselves cos our government has failed us, should we fail ourselves too?. Please ppl let's do dis do not ignore call to serve ur country.... Linda over to u.

  83. I quite appreciate CSR Channels TV is trying to do.But we should ask those past IGPs how much was voted for the renovation of the college for past 15yrs.If they can come out and say nothing was given then i could advice people to support the CSR but if it turned out that the past IGPs has been using the college as a funnel for personal enrichment then heads should roll at the ministry of police affairs. This is a complete disgrace to the nation. Those trainee should be moved to a hotel and the complete structures should be demolished.

Kudos should go to present IGP.I watched his interview on the above subject matters with Channels TV.How many IGP would allow his constituency to be exposed? He supported the exposure so that Nigerian would see how bad the police affairs has degenerated to and people to understand the quality of policing they are getting via-a-vis the input of training as a function of the output.I can assure you the fast response that will come from the Govt as result from this exposure.May God Almighty continue to strengthen and Bless and bestow more wisdom from the throne of grace to present IGP Abubakar.

  87. Linda thanks for using your media might to help get the message out?

This is despicable! I always weep and pray for Nigeria, but is that enough! Clearly not! Things are not changing, instead the situation worsens! When will our government learn that they get back what they put in. How can they ask the Police Force to operate with high standards if they are put in this mess initially?

I truly despair! I don't know about you all, but I feel so much pain and anguish, yet feel so helpless! If you try to solicit change in Nigeria you get bombarded by negativity, corruption, unethical offers, conflict, folk asking you to sell your conscience or face failure.

  112. IF A POLICE COLLEGE LOOKS LIKE THIS HOW WILL A PRISON OR DETENTION CELL BE? IS THIS A COUNTRY OR A JUNGLE? NO HUMAN BEING CAN COME OUT OF THIS TRAINING AND STILL HAVE A MODICUM OF MORALTY, DECORUM, CIVILITY, DECENCY OR SANITY. THEY ARE NOT TRAINING PEOPLE, THEY ARE DESTROYING THEIR HUMANITY!!!

  113. I was in Nigeria 3yrs ago to get a Nigerian passport, here I was thinking their office in Ikoyi was like a boyscotter. The state of their desk, chairs, building was not a good site. And you still had this arrogant, selfish, inconsiderate staff, who are quite nasty. Forget customer service. I would have understood if i was told the country i was in was Congo, but this was GIANT of AFRICA, big oil producer.(by mouth). Anyway the Police College is in its on Premier league.

  115. Chei, The Nigerian Police...I'm speechless. No one has mentioned this but we have the minister of police affairs. That ministry get allocation, what do they do with the money? Kai, how can people live like this? The beds are supported with bricks and the IG was nominated for Silverbird man of the year. Clueless government. I'm sure Nigerian Defence Academy is not any different cos I've passed by and it's nothing to write home about from the outside.

Hey, I'm still shouting. N150 daily for what!!! If I were in their shoes, I won't collect N20 or N50, I'll collect N1000 or impound your vehicle. Aha aha......

  116. I passed through the police college compound on my way home from school inthe early 80s, it was still ok then. Not great, as you still see the military equipment left by colonial masters still in there. But are we saying here all the Nigerian institutions are like that. The only exception is the airport and that is to deceive johnny foreigner that you in a cool country. All they do is borrow money to celebrate Independende day. 50th annivasary jamboree.

  117. God bless Channels TV for bringing this story to light. I've watched clips on Channels for a couple of days now and my heart just keeps breaking over and over again.

There's more than enough money for them to fix this place up and still go on their stealing spree. Fixing the college is just a little drop in their sea of illegally stolen money.

I think our leaders are deranged.

Channels TV is organizing some sort of session to address this issue. Tune in on 22nd January to watch. I'm not too sure of the time now....7pm or 9pm

  120. will the people comparing this to orientation camps shut their mouths for goodness sakes?#noticemeattentionseeker!
we are talking about people living like animals from the beginning to the end of their career you are comparing it to orientation camps did you live like this all through your university?and are you compelled to be there without leaving or finding an alternative??

i think its high time those who are benefitting more from the police protection should step in and undertake this renovations…
if GLO takes up renovation of a few wings and then put their logo on it and MTN, and other companies do same with an agreement to repaint and maintain independent of the police or their contractors for their logo to be displayed on the building including a plaque showing they did the renovation this would go a long way in alleviating the plight of these officers..things can't continue in this way

  124. A panel should be constituted to investigate this issue from the stand point of 1. human rights abuse 2. criminal endangerment of lives and most importantly, fraud, embezzlement and deceipt as a matter of law. The reason being that x amount of money is being budgted for this dungeon (college)every year and contracts are being awarded without wnything being done.

The EFCC must get down and dirty on this one and make sure that all the monies that have been allocated for this thing made known to all Nigerians and who were responsible for this inhumane act.

Nigerians have to start somewhere and this is a prime example where to start. Please bring all the past IGs and commandants of this place to account for this embarrassment.

  125. It is a sad sight. Successfully graduating from a pig sty tends to damage the thinking faculties of anyone.

  126. Abeg Abeg Abeg. Everybody is forming this is so sad but those of us that attended boarding schools know better. at least this men are men. i was just 11 when I got admission to command secondary school Ipaja and I can assure you that the conditions u see in this pictures are exactly what command was like. yet nobody came to do an exposee on that stupid school and other boarding schl like that.

  132. I totally agree with OnPoint's suggestion. All of us contributing N1000 for the renovation would make a huge difference instead of sitting down raining causes.

Lets be the change we want for our nation just to prove to our useless leaders that tables are turning.

    Linda lets do this!!

  135. And they were so proud about fixing up the airport. This is what needs to be fixed up! When you train for a career in a dump like this how can you be expected to do your work with pride? There are crack houses in better condition than this filthy hovel. Even barns for farm animals look better than this. Kudos to the station for bringing this to light! I hope thye do more like it.

  138. *Linda. It all stems from our culture of begging for forgiveness. Buhari the former speaker of house of rep begged and we forgave him, Tafa begged/ Ibori begged/ Alams begged/the Lagos boy from PDP begged. Until we punish all the looters and put them in jail times that are appropriate for their crimes, Nigeria will not know peace. Let people account for their budgetary allocations and stpo cheating the masses

  139. When I was watching the documentaries in the TV where 50 men divide 1 Fish for meal. Soup for these 50 grown up men was watery and can hardly feed 10 people - the first thing that came to my mind was that our prisoners are suffering badly and under a very severe inhumane condition. Behold, I was shocked to know that the place in that documentary is not a prison setting by a Police College!

Mate this is Nigeria not London so expect anything , a lot of places in Nigeria look like that so i don't understand why people r acting as if Nigeria is a developed place . Yes it is appalling but please don't try and act as if Nigeria is some place that everything is in proper order . There is still a long way to go

  146. What is so surprising. Don't most Nigerians live like this. Check out those who live in bachas. Truth of the matter is we are a dirty people. When we see filth we don't even notice it any more. Our markets where we buy the foods we eat are the filthiest places. So what's so unusual about the police college.
