He immediately proceeded on an inspection tour of the hostels, college kitchen, dining hall and the Officers’ Mess. Then he demanded to know how Channels TV gained access to the college to film the embarrassing condition of the college. No one had an answer for him. He promised to revamp the college after declaring that the documentary by Channels was a smear campaign.
He said:
“This is a calculated attempt to damage the image of this government. The Police College, Ikeja is not the only training institution in Nigeria"Imagine! How is it a smear campaign? See more photos after the cut...
TALES BY MOONLIGHT MR GEJ. TRUTH IS BITTER

DeleteA smear campaign?! God! What kind of leaders do we have in this country?
DeleteIf this story was actually made-up, then he could have said it was a smear campaign. But as it is, this is factual and he wouldn't have had a clue about it if that story wasn't aired on Channels TV.
I never thought highly of him since his campaign in Ibadan, though I wish he had proved me wrong. My perception hasn't changed if indeed he did said that.

ReplyDeleteThis comment d President made has finally sealed it for me. I can't stand this ingrate!
ReplyDeleteRather than thank channel TV for making him aware of this mess,he is asking to know how they got into that shit hole!
He shud be wondering why dat police college have been left in that mess after so many govt came and gone. Who is in charge of maintenance for d college and why is it left in such a dilpidated shape? This is a place where u train ur first responders? The state of that institution clearly shows u d effect of corruption in most of our institutions and this is what Jonathan is trying to hide! U see what Obasanjo hoisted upon nigerians? A corrupt lazy man!
HOW IS IT A SMEAR CAMPAIGN..WHAT WAS THE GOVERNMENT DOING WHEN CHANNELS UNDER TOOK THE TASK TO BE A SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE CORPORATION,RATHER THAN BE GRATEFUL TO A SOCIAL RESPONSIBLE ORGANIZATION HE IS TURNING A GOOD THING TO A BAD ONE.HABA WHEN WILL GOVERNMENT LEARN THAT IT ALSO NEEDS HELP FROM GOVERNMENT.HABA.
ReplyDeletePlease... this is like saying that just because you were caught with your pants down in a toilet you weren't going to take a shit. Smear campaign ko smear campaign ni... who do you think you are kidding!

ReplyDeletePRINCE CHARMING ,YOUR ARE A GOAT.EYE SERVICE GOAT.I GUESS YOUR A POLITICIAN SUPPORT PDP.
DeleteWhy must mr. President ask.how channels tv gained entrance into the police college.
ReplyDeleteI feel it is not important to know how the television crew entered the college to film the facilities. But the important stuff is to get the urgly situation arrested
its not just enough to pay a surprise visit, they should spring into action pronto!!!! i'm not impressed till i see a total overhauling of the college.
ReplyDeleteWhat does he mean by how did Channels gain access to the college ?,where is the freedom of the press?,like renovating the police college for the country he rules is rocket science
ReplyDeleteCome is this jonathan an illitrate,if channels didn't gain access to the police college to show the state of the place would his attention been drawn there,if channels succeeded in getting his attention then I encourage them more to show more places like the police college,so jonah can keep visiting and doing something about the situation,I hail channels abeg

Who are the people advising GEJ sef how can he say this is a smear campaign. Conditions there have been appalling for years did Channels do anything wrong by exposing the shame. No wonder police men in Nigeria are poorly trained, incompetent and ineffective. The training ground pretty much tells you about the end product.
ReplyDeleteWe need more "smear campaigns". Police cannot investigate to know or ask Channels TV how they got access to the college pictures?
ReplyDeleteAbi o! A whole "police" college no know as TV take enter make documentary!!! But Mr president, I am disliking you more for that statement you made. Smear campaign or not, the fact still remains that that police college is an EYESORE!!!!! I'm still cringing at the sight of the pictures. GOD!!!!

ReplyDeleteAn Open Letter to Mr President
ReplyDeleteDear Sir,
You paid a surprise visit to the Lagos Police College to see for yourself, the situation documented by Channels TV; Sir, I applauded you for using your initiative. As I read through the details of your visit to the college, I heard you made this statement, “TV documentary was a calculated smear campaign against this government” and you also questioned the authorities at the college for approving the documentary.
Mr President, I am not happy with you for making an unnecessary statement and asking such irrelevant questions. In this vain, I do have five questions for you.
1. Who cares about the statement you made?
2. Who is the government really?
3. What was your true reason for visiting the college?
4. Will something be done about the situation?
5. Will someone get sacked for approving the honest documentation of the situation?
Sir, I know you may not know me in person but please know that I’m upset with you. You hurt me all the time with the things you say and I think you should please watch what you say and how you say it for the sake of our hearts; these police students are living in very terrible conditions which has ripple effects eternally, Yes, ETERNALLY!!!
Don’t hurt me again Mr President, don’t. When you are faced with a problem or complain, see it as a challenge and please solve it with good intentions like an exemplary leader would, instead of making politically stimulated statements.
Don’t hurt us Nigerians again Mr President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, it’s enough please.
Do have a fabulous day, God bless you Sir.
Abiola…
Letter also signed by me .. . Jumoke
DeleteI don't know the problem with this man,how is this a smear campaign? If channels hadn't exposed this am sure he as president wasn't aware,he is always politicising issues...utter rubbish.
ReplyDeleteIt is nt the only institute but it is one of it......if Channels had nt showed it on TV notin would av been done....
ReplyDeleteHe made thousands of promises in 2010. Has he fulfilled even just one of those....clueless president presiding over a clueless government
ReplyDeleteAnd a clueless foolish ppl
DeleteMr. President, Police college Ikeja is just a tip of an Iceberg, there are other places that needs urgent reformation... besides the Nigerian Police can always sort themselves without the help of the FG.
ReplyDelete"How did channels TV gain access to the Police College?" Is that a question? Yuck! If they hadn't revealed the shameful condition of the facilities in the sch, wud Jona have made the effort to go see tins for himself. "Calculated attempt to tarnish the image of the GOvt". Was the any dif between what he saw and what channels TV published? Ofcourse there's obviousely no diff meaning there was not any fucking atempt to tarnish govt image. Tufiakwa!! Nigeria is so fucked wit deceitful, disgusting and criminal minded leaders. mehn! My heart bled wen I saw those pictures and the video. The condition of the place is unthinkable;God forbid. May God change them this 2013 by fire by force. We are tired of lies!! BRAVO Channel TV!! That was a wonderful Job.
ReplyDelete@how de gained access!.. Story!.. Mtscheeeew!.. Is a global world,.. just wt a small nokia phone it can be filmed!..

DeleteThe president should just thank Channels TV for exposing the shameful state of the Police College.
ReplyDeleteHe should therefore focus on making the place habitable and befitting, and stop pointing accusing fingers.
Kudos Channels TV...if not for you people, the world wont know that our police men are being trained to be 'criminals'.
Nigerians should pass a "vote of no confidence" in jonathan's govt. 2015 appears too long before this guy leaves office.
ReplyDeleteI'm really scared for Nigeria. Must will politicise everything. The college is not fit for animals to live in talk less of human beings.
ReplyDeleteHow can your mumu president say this is a smear campaign after he has inspected and seen for himself.
Shame on Nigeria and corruption, we can really really do better than this fisherman!
Typical! Calling it a smear overcampaign. Good Sir, what is left to smear of your government. See our issue in Naija, we do not like being held accountable. It is this attitude of "don't air dirty laundry" that has caused us to decay to this point. Sir, if you say there are other training institutions, then I am certain they are worst than this.
ReplyDeleteFor once, just accept the fate of things and FIX IT. Why say anything about it being a smear campaign. KUDOS to Channels for doing responsible journalism. This is what is done in the countries where these leaders vacation. It is not a smear on your administration my dear "educated" president. It is an expose, a "Sit up and work" if you will.
MORE SMEAR CAMPAIGNS CHANNELS. Expose these lazy leaders. And Naija people, una no sabi take care of things ma sef. So if this place is fixed someone will decide to act like they have never seen functioning toilets and clean walls. Please maintenance starts with us as well.
ReplyDeleteThe power of the media... Thank God it made a difference.

ReplyDeletehow the fuck can this be a smear campaign...i nearly committed suicide at NYSC camp no kidding. That place was hell on earth...I'm talking about ISEYIN. It was a biohazard with poop and mud everywhere. If i made a video of that would that be a smear campaign too. Fix up guy and stop talking shit
ReplyDeleteThis man, tho... I canty insult him! But let him just bloody do his job! This is a democratic state, and channels has right to film..its called checks and balances! The people have a voice to speak and show the ills in the society.... And yes even an LIB commenter can speak!#hehehe
ReplyDeleteI have lost all respect for this Jonathan! Where did he pick up his PHD frm? He sounds brain dead!
ReplyDeletewhy is this man like this? what reasonable person can speak like this? smear campaign? may God help us
ReplyDeletePolice college is not the president's responsibility. Every year the Nigeri Police force receive billions of Naira from the budget to be used to maintain these institutions, where did the money go?
ReplyDeleteGEJ is of course an idiot for calling the documentary a 'smear Campaign' but he shouldn't be promising to revamp the school, he should be summoning all past administrators of that college as well as the IGP to face the music and explain where all the allocation went.
But of course it is easier to just release small peanuts to revamp the college.
It seems to me that this man and his wife have the saMe level of understanding of d spoken english.languaGe. SMear campaign ma ass.
ReplyDeletei must give him kudos for this..at least this whole campaign started from channels and was sustained by twitter and blogs including several websites and he promptly responded to it even though it wasn't on his official itinerary..
ReplyDeletethe next thing is for him to actually do something about it…i think the man's intellect can only deal with solving one problem after the other after this one we will start a campaign about electricity, then other issues one after the other
The fact that mr. President paid a surprised visit to the college after the broadcast by channels is a good step and exactly wat a good leader should do but why he con spoil every thing again na!! How is it a smear on his campaign must every thing be about election??? Chai be4 I read his comment I planned to vote for him come 2015 but his comment just broke my heart.
ReplyDelete@ mr presido truth is always a bitter pill face the fact by the way does it matter if the academy is not the only institution in Nigeria !!
Ella
If by "smear campaign" he means that the deplorable living conditions and the dire state of what is meant to be a training facility for 'law enforcers' have been exposed, then he is spot-on! otherwise this a retarded statement.
ReplyDeleteYou are missing the point. What u don't get is that the police college is in a hidden location known by only a few. It is surrounded by a very high fortified wall with police snipers on strategic locations. There are 2 armoured vehicles at the main gate and you'll have to pass about 5 checkpoints to get to the police college it self. Guards patrol the compound along with police dogs and this is just on d outside. When u get to the college, you'll have to go thry body searches, infra red body scans and all that. Hence the reason he asked how Channels could get in to take thos pics. They must have done it with the CIA. So even if I were president, I'd be baffled that someone to gain access to somewhere like this. Smear campaign by the world truly. **very straight face**
ReplyDeleteSam-Syke
Why exactly would the CIA care about ONE police college in Nigeria? Not all the colleges o, just one. & not the actual police force o, just the conditions of the trainees. Abeg try give urself small brain biko!
DeleteI'm so ashamed and embarrassed for this president of ours! Shouldn't he be wondering how the monies meant for the upkeep of these places are managed? Smear campaign indeed! He' s so clueless without his scripts written for him! Heard on CNN the other about how a country that cannot contain its own terrorist situation is sending troops to Mali and I colored from embarrassment. Only God can help in this Naija..
ReplyDeletefucking idiot should any look like this and this is popular
ReplyDeletenow Nigerians cry!......haha!...... 9ja has not seen anything yet ........next election go out and vote for this "cabals" again then comeback an cry, complain bitter......foolish NIGERIANS only GOD can help US!
ReplyDeleteGEJ!!! i am so ashamed. Can imagine how he thinks or rather how his advisers think for him.
ReplyDeleteI suppose the 150 Naira per head food allows xe that meant recruits were eating meagre portions out of buckets like refugees was also A CACULTED ATTEMPT TO SMEAR THE GOVT. was it?
ReplyDeleteWhat he should have said was:
Good people of Nigeria. Firstly may I commend Channels TV for their excellent and invaluable exposé on the conditions our Ikeja police recruits are li ing in. With this sort of journalism the hidden borrows of our country will always remain so.
Secondly, I would like to assure the good people of this country that there will be a full investigation into the circumstances that have led to the deplorable state of the facilities. The investigation will focus on
1. How many maintenance contracts have been awarded in this and previous govts
2. To whom the contracts were awarded to
3. What work was completed
4. Who signed-off on the correct execution of the contract
5. A review of the catering allowance and service provided, to ensure recruits are getting the much needed nutrients required to conduct their jobs with focus and zest
In addition, a review of all such facilities and their respective maintenance contracts will be undertaken immediately.
This is not a witch hunt, but rest assured, no stone will be left unturned In the quest for truth and justice. Accountability must be reinstated.
Stay tuned for developments.
Linda you are misleading your readers..that statement was only carried by the Punch and Nation newspapers which can be taken with a pinch of salt because they are well known for their bias in reporting any news relating to Jonathan..no other newspaper carried or reported that statement. And don't forget that the CEO of Channels newspaper was present during the tour so how can he asking how they got in when John Momoh was alongside with him.
ReplyDeleteGEJ legacy, i wonder how he feels seeing this. SMH
ReplyDeleteGEJ is so dumb, like so dumb. There are many police colleges abi but this one is this disgusting. I am so sorry for you.
ReplyDeleteI have finally given up on this so- called Nigeria president.
ReplyDeleteNigerians, believe you me, we do not have a president.
And they are building the VP"s residential area with ???billions.Just one man. God help us!
ReplyDeleteThis administration is taking us 30years backward.
ReplyDeleteGEJ must have smoked something before talking. He should be apologizing not playing the victim.
ReplyDeletePlease before we nail GEJ to the cross,we should know the truth,GEJ was the first president to visit police college for over 72 years, there are people those colleges are trusted into their care but our tradition in Nigeria is that we always blame president even when our own brothers and sisters those institutions are trusted in their care have run it down...we should know if he did made comment...thanks
ReplyDeletethe president doesn't seem to have a grasp of what he is saying. How can it be, you are walking through the place, seeing the deplorable conditions yourself. Fact that he is asking how the Tv station got in the place tells you how misplaced that statement is. You mean these run down institutions should continue to be at a decayed state without any hope of repair. Ok, sorry, you guys should
ReplyDeletecontinue to plant flowers on the road side, deceive foreigners that Nigeria is Giant of Africa. One would
have understood if he had said he is sorry and
embarrassed that another fellow human will go
through such conditions. But with his statement he
has just slapped these cadets twice in the face. Go
on send your soldiers to Mali as the saviour of
Africa(since you want to flex to the world that
Nigeria is the United State of Africa). From gathered
intelligence been reported they dont even the
strategy of how they will be tackle the so called al
qee da. Praying those soldiers come back alive.
They had terrible strategy going into sierra leone,
where the soldiers were dragged in the street. or it
the recent Libya.
Mr president should take. urgent action this is not d time to ask for hao chaNnels got to the rooms
ReplyDeleteGreat move by the president for the visit. However, his comments simply shows how a typical Nigerian politician thinks. The right thing 2 do would have been to thank Channels and encourage the media to keep doing the good work. Instead he's trying to protect his govt rather than concentrate on making the country a better place. This is just a shame cos almost all Nigerian politicians reason this way. Anyway,I still commend GEJ 4 the visit and hope the college is restored to a habitable environment. We need more of this kind of places exposed. Thanks Channels n Linda 4d good work.
ReplyDeleteGEJ is just being ungrateful. This simply means that Channels TV is more responsible than whoever runs Nigerian Police. GEJ should learn to commend people when they do well. Don't play politics with everything. This is rather shameful.

ReplyDeleteWHEN IS OUR PRESIDENT GOING TO WAKE UP. HE HAS BEEN PRACTICALLY ASLEEP SINCE HE HAS BEEN PRESIDENT.HABA, THIS MAN TALKS AND DOES THINGS ON IMPULSE WITHOUT THINKING. NO WONDER MOST NIGERIANS BELIEVED THAT HE IS A DRUNK AND HE IS A USELESS PRESIDENT. HOW DID WE EVEN GET HERE. I THINK GOD-FATHERISM SHOULD BE DISCARDED BECAUSE IF NOT FOR OBJ, WE WONT BE IN THIS 'PENKELE MESS'. PLEASE JONATHAN WAKE UP TO YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE WHEREWITHAL TO GOVERN PLEASE RESIGN. GOVERNMENT IS NOT BUYING JETS AND ALLOCATING MILLIONS FOR ENTERTAINMENT[ONLY ACHIEVEMENT SINCE BECOMING PRESIDENT] WHILE PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING AND GOVERNMENT CANNOT EVEN DO SIMPLE MAINTENANCE. JESUS, AND THIS MAN HAS A PHD. HOW DID THIS MAN GET HIS PHD? DID HE EVEN DEFEND IT? I WILL LIKE TO SEE A VIDEO WHERE THIS PRESIDENT DEFENDED HIS THESIS. THIS MAN IS GOING DOWN AS THE MOST SENSELESS NIGERIAN PRESIDENT EVER. FORMER PRESIDENT SHAGARI WHO HAS A GRADE 2 TEACHER CERTIFICATE IS 1000 TIMES MORE QUALIFIED TO BE A PRESIDENT THAN THIS JONA OF A PRESIDENT. GOOD LUCK TURNED BAD LUCK.
Nigeria or should we say Nigerians are not ready to fix the country. I remember going through the MURTALA airport 3 yrs ago and virgin atlantic plane omhad a problem, well to keep it short the crew and pilot bailed out of the airport before it was announced to the paasengers that we weren't flying. It now turned a hugh task just to get our luggages back. Waiting almost 3-5 hours before finally been attached to our cases. Chaos, no organisation, no contingency plan inplace. The staff were very nasty and bossy. Eventually had enough and brought out
ReplyDeletemy camcorder to film. In less than a minute had
this custom guy say if I didnt put the camera away
he will deal with himself. My point is, to highlight
problems like this is the beginning of fixing the
issues. Instead they rather want to look the other
way. Right now heathrow airport is snowed under,
people are using camera phones to video people
sleeping at the airport, and also to send to The
Airport management company BAA that this is not
going to fly, no one is threatning them with violence. This president is out of order.
I did not vote for u GEJ and I wud never vote for u even if u contest again....
ReplyDeleteIf police college is not his responsibility, then why did he go there?
ReplyDeleteLinda, I beg to disagree with this story culled from the Punch Newspaper. The President did not berate the Police College Commandant nor did he tag the Channels TV story as smear campaign against his government. My question to the Punch reporter is if Mr. President will want to condemn Channels TV, how come Mr. John Momoh the Chairman of Channels TV was among his delegates to the Police College? How come it is only Punch Newspaper that is quoting this? We just need to stick to the ethics of proper journalism.
ReplyDeleteAs a current serving force guy I tell you something, let's be wise in what eve we say, let me remind you that this college we talk about has been like this for several years, the past presidents we've had did not about it, abdulsalam, obj, and even the late president did noting about it..like wise all the past IG..so what are saying..?? It would be so unwise putting the blame on Gej..besides even the present and past IG had never made a serious complain to presidency..we should only encourage Gej to do something positive, I went through the college and i tell you it really needs help..besides some state governors has pumped money and transformed the police college in their states.

ReplyDeleteHow did Nigeria get into this mess by electing this Man as President. My eyes are filled with Tears for a Country so blessed in everything
ReplyDeleteThis man is deluded. How is this a smear campaign? Better he had said he cannot be expected to know the details of every government institution and depended on those in charge of their various ministries to handle their portfolios well, but now that he has seen for himself the grossly inhumane state of the facility he will make it his personal mission to ensure the facility is in a condition fit for human habitation and apologize to the present and past trainees who had to train under such conditions. That's all he had to say, now he looks like an idiot and an inconsiderate one too for turning this into a situation about him. Has he lived and suffered in that place to now be acting as though he is the one in hurting? kmt

DeleteI guess half of the staff at the Police College were not on seat on the presido's arrival, including their oga kpata kpata! lol
ReplyDeleteDid the Prisident go to PCI to find out who granted Channels the right to film? I laugh. When you fail in Nigeria you hold your unseen enemies responsible. Channels has now joined the foes of GEJ? He should have left quietly as he came and keep his feeling to himself.
ReplyDeletei wonder how jona feels walking in this un hygenic enviro. let the head of police roll sacked
ReplyDeletesee www.3dnigeria.wordpress.com for a comical take on this issue.
ReplyDeleteMr. President,
ReplyDeleteThe first thing you should have done was to terminate everyone within the financial chain of command for the Police College. Everyone that managed the finances for the institution should have been fired on the spot.
Next, you hold a press conference -- with Fashola by your side -- during which you announce that emergency funds have been provided (and how much was provided) to modernize the institution in its entirety. This you task Fashola with because Ikeja is part of his jurisdiction.
Finally, you make a note to the audience that each month, an update will be provided by Channels TV. They should be given every reasonable access to the facilities to inspect the work that is being done.
THAT, MR. PRESIDENT is how you do your job!

Linda,
ReplyDeletePlease, feature Lagos-Ibadan road and other similar roads on a regular basis, point the other media houses in the same direction.
Linlin, presido don confirm truly truly say im dey clueless... This na God given opportunity wey e suppose use appear presidential but no, after doing good by paying the visit, e come spoil the whole show by that very unbelievable comment. You sure say no be village things? I dey wonder wetin the man dey think sometimes sef. For im mind, e go think say "kai, see this rotten place wey don dey since, dem no film am but na during my own time dem come do this kind thing to embarrass me. In short ehn, i go deal with the person wey allow this filming".
ReplyDeleteAnyway, this no be surprise... Together with some of im stupid thoughts like "terrorism is a global thing, maybe it is Nigeria's turn" "It is not the work of mend, I know mend and what they can do" "I don't give a damn" "the south west is too important to be left in the hands of rascals" I believe say im handlers suppose by now dey dey alert to cover the man mouth with their hands anytime the man wan open mouth yakata talk.
An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a coworker
