Lance Armstrong admits doping to Oprah

Lance Armstrong told Oprah during the first of a two-part interview Thursday night, that he doped throughout his career and might not have been caught if not for his comeback in 2009. His longtime friend and training partner George Hincapie, who was along for the ride on all his Tour de France wins from 1999-2005, was forced to give him up to anti-doping authorities.

Lance also admitted that he was the ring leader of the US Postal Service doping team .
''I'm a flawed character,'' he said.
Did it feel wrong? Oprah asked
''No,'' Armstrong replied. ''Scary.''
''Did you feel bad about it?'' Winfrey pressed him.
''No,'' he said. ''Even scarier.''
''Did you feel in any way that you were cheating?''
''No,'' Armstrong paused. ''Scariest.''
''I went and looked up the definition of cheat. And the definition is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe. I didn't view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field.''
See more after the cut...

''I'm not comfortable talking about other people,'' Armstrong said. ''I don't want to accuse anybody.''

''This story was so perfect for so long. It's this myth, this perfect story, and it wasn't true,'' he said.

Then Oprah began asking for yes-or-no answers to five questions.
Did Armstrong take banned substances? ''Yes.''
Did that include the blood-booster EPO? ''Yes.''
Did he do blood doping and use transfusions? ''Yes.''
Did he use testosterone, cortisone and human growth hormone? ''Yes.''
Did he take banned substances or blood dope in all his Tour wins? ''Yes.''

In your opinion is it humanly possible to win the Tour de France without doping seven times in a row? Oprah asked. Not in my opinion, Lance answered

''I deserve this,'' he said ''It's a major flaw, and it's a guy who expected to get whatever he wanted and to control every outcome. And it's inexcusable. And when I say there are people who will hear this and never forgive me, I understand that. I do. That defiance, that attitude, that arrogance, you cannot deny it.''

Armstrong said he started doping in mid-1990s but didn't when he finished third in his comeback attempt in 2009.

''Have you made peace?'' Winfrey asked.
''No,'' Armstrong replied, ''because so many people have been hurt too badly, and a 40-minute (phone) conversation isn't enough.''

  6. Lance had been interrogated uncountable number of times and always denied that he doped, even when the evidence against him was so great! My question now- how come Oprah was able to get him to confess??? Hmmm.

  7. Sad how an someone like Armstrong who was an icon then can become a public disgrace now, this will surely be a message to deter upcoming sports men and women against doping, taking the shorter path to glory always comes with sad consequences at the end

  10. I remember one of my lecturers asked us to go look up Lance Armstrong and talk about his amazing comeback after his battle with testicular cancer. Seemed almost unreal that determination and sheer grit could get him all the Tour de France titles in succession.
I still believe determination played a major role in his fame. He must have been very determined to win cuz he managed to scale through the dope tests.

  15. Evil that men do lives after them. You cant have all in life. He should have stayed retired, but human greediness and nemesis way of catching up.7 titles in a row without testing positive to doping.wow.This saga is just begining and more worms will come out of the can.

  16. Sorry to say, and sincerely speaking, Lance is not saying his heart. I think he just said what the world wants to hear and just keep the truth to himself. It gets to a point where your name is dented that you cant even say it's not true, but just to tell them to go on. That is exactly what Lance has done!

  20. Damn. Oprah's couch must be really comfy they way celebrities rush to her during controversial times.

Now he's going spend his life in regret. Building your castles on a lie, surely they will come tumbling down.

  21. I really loved this guy. I'm disappointed but can forgive him. Dedicate the rest of your life to doing good, Lance. The world will eventually forgive

  22. So Lance Armstrong will now be remembered as Cycling biggest cheat instead of the best rider. This is a warning to upcoming athletes never to get into doping. Hard work and perseverance pays. Good Name is better than riches. One Clean tour D' France win is better than Seven soiled wins. If he could attain third position in 2009 cleanly, that means he would have be able to win at least one Tour D' France cleanly if only he worked hard enough. The coaches are also just as guilty as the doping athletes.

  23. He knew his feat wasn't humanly possible. The authorities knew too but they just couldn't nab him. He devised the most sophisticated method of covering all traces in his system. But eventually, his trainer gave him up. Everyday for the thief, one day for the owner.

  24. No US athelete should be taken seriously, most dope. Marion Jones got away with it for so long.

No, he cant they were all banned for doping.

I bet you he will make money out of this.......

    SADDDDDDDDDDD

  31. Lance did the right thing. A man whose conscience has not yet been seared will do what he has done. Lies or cheating may run for years but it takes only one day for truth to catch up.

  32. That is why it is not good to compare yourself to someone else. Imagine if someone has been envying this guy and saying God why is my own life like this na? Why i no fit win medals na? etc. Isale oro legbin (the foundation/begining/source/origin of whealth/fortune is dirty). Eni ti ko ba mo ibi ti egbe e ti la, o maa sare ku ni (he who does not know how/where his mates made their whealth will just pursue them and die)

  39. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets sued by multiple people. Prison is an option but unlikely.

From those exchanges it just doesn't sound like he's sorry, more like he's sorry he got caught.

It will take ages to sort out all this chaos.
