‘I give God 10%, why should you get 18?’ Pastor to waiter

I love this pastor, this mandatory tip can be a little annoying sha! lol. So a photo of the receipt above was posted on Reddit today. It shows a bill for $34.93 with an automatic tip of 18% ($6.29) included above a blank space for an additional tip.

The customer who got bill wrote on it: 'I give God 10%, why do you get 18?', he then scratched out the automatic tip, wrote an emphatic 'O' in the additional tip and signed it Pastor.

Lol. No time, no time!

  1. Hahaha, he's just being cheap, and his bill is not even that much. If the service was no good, then fine.

    1. Dude, that line is tired. Why is it that a restaurant will go to the trouble of advertising for, interviewing and hiring waiters, only to tell them "you're on your own o"? Which other employer would hire staff for no wages- is it even legal? Oya now they should kuku stop paying teachers and have parents tip them for good service. The last time I checked America was still advertising themselves as 'the land of the free', so waiters are free to work anywhere they like. Imagine if everybody boned for working as an unpaid waiter/ess.....restaurant owners will regularise Sharp Sharp.

And don't get me started on rude New York cabbies and the way they demand tips as a right...

      Delete
    2. He/she is right. Those waiters get by on tips. They pay them sooooooo poor even in the US. The good thing about it is that the waiter tries to be nice cos he knows if he doesn't serve you well, you won't drop but a happy customer who enjoyed his service can tip him equivalent of his 2weeks salary.

    3. No, the pastor isn't a douche bag, the restaurant owner is for paying their employees way below minimum wage, despite the fact that the restaurant business is a high margin business.

To the Anonymous that commented earlier, you are actually the one that should do some fact checking.

Yes, tips should not bemandatory. But because the waiters are paid around $3 an hour instead of the usual $7-8 for minimum wager, tips have become necessary for them to supplement their income.

Secondly, a mandatory gratuity (what an oxymoron) has been added by restaurants for larger parties because they do usually undertip. There are subtle ways to get out of paying it, but it is not as easy as walking up to the manager and voicing your refusal, "because tips should be optional". This is America, the land of technicalities.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Just bcos its America doesn't excuse the crappy mandatory tip. It shouldn't be called tip, call it service charge or something that makes sense. I've paid for the service I got, why should I tip u by force?

  28. Where is tax? Do I pay tax and still pay tip?

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's important to give tips because l hear the waiters are poorly payed so their income majorly comes from the tips. What just occcured to me is that l truly calculate 15% most times and even try to add 'jare' when the tip is small or I am happy with the service. Once in a blue moon, l dont give tips. THe pastor kinda made sense but didnt have to take it too far! It's the norm but not compulsory.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This pastor is not serious, waiters get paid barely anything, they make almost all their money from tips and the 18% is not mandatory its just a recommendation. The pastor isn't showing that he's a Man of God, even if he won't give much he's just helping me see why I don't have much faith in humanity anymore.

  51. Unfortunately tips are mandatory in the USA. Waiters are paid $3 or so an hour and tips is where they make their money from. The government should step up and make it mandatory for restaurant servers be paid regular wages. That way you only tip if you want to. Their salary is not a problem of the customer and should not fall on our shoulder.

That being said, anyone going out to eat in USA knows that you have to tip.and if you know you are not going to tip, do not go out.It is as simple as that.

  54. The pastor is a foolish man. It's only Nigerians that behave like uncivilized human beings. If you go to certain cities like New York City and you go to a good restaurant, it is mandatory that u offer the waiter who has served you a specific amt of tip. Even if he didn't want to pay the 18%, he shud have been courteous enuff to have given a tip of less than that. With all the money these pastors steal from their church members, to give a tip of $6 is still hard. Freaking ridiculous!

  62. This man should step down from the pulpit, please. He is not worthy of being called a man of God. The bible says 10%, the restaurant says their wait staff should get 18%...what did the bible say about OBEDIENCE again? Or what about that little bit about helping those in lower stations of life?

What is that little saying about when in Rome? If you live in a country that there is no tipping required in restaurants then fine that is probably because the wait staff are being compensated well for their service, I know in Europe it is not mandatory HOWEVER if you are in the US where it is required, respect your damnself and tip! You wan travel, abi? Then act like a well travelled knowledgeable visitor of another country or keep your cheap skate self at HOME!!!

Wait staff make BELOW minimum wage and so tips are a way to supplement their incomes. The minimum tip is 15% and if the service is really great, the customer can add more at his or her discretion. If the service is bad, you can also decide to NOT leave a tip either, nobody will arrest you for it!
