Catholic Church of Nigeria withdraws from the Christian Association of Nigeria

Right: official Catholic church letter withdrawing from CAN

The Catholic Church of Nigeria yesterday temporarily withdrew its membership from the Christian  Association of Nigeria (CAN). Their reason? That CAN under Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor has been compromised. Also because of some uncouth statements by some Christian leaders, and the use of money in CAN elections and several court cases involving state chapters of CAN.

Spokesperson of the Church, Rev. Fr. Dr. Cornelius Omonokhua, said:
"You just can't save people who are drowning, if you are drowning with them. CAN is being dragged into partisan politics thereby compromising the ability to play its true role as conscience of the nation and the voice of the voiceless. We will be happy if CAN leadership can show moderation. Common sense dictates that they do that.”
The Catholic church said they would review their withdrawal from CAN after the annual meeting of the Conference of Bishops in February. See more after the cut...

Meanwhile CAN has reacted to CCN's withdrawal, calling it good riddance. A rep accused the Christian denomination of arrogance, saying they were merely angry because the presidency of the association had moved to another bloc of the group.

Spokesperson for the 19 Northern chapters of CAN, Sunny Oibe, told Punch:
“There are some certain elements in the leadership of CAN led by Cardinal John Onaiyekan because he lost CAN Presidency to Oritsejafor who has a lot of achievements. There is no need for anybody to lose sleep over the threat by Catholics to pull out of CAN because without them CAN will still continue. The constitution of CAN makes provision that membership can be terminated by any group that is misbehaving or any group can also terminate their membership.
“Why is it that when Catholics were in the leadership of CAN, every bloc supported them, but now because power has changed hands, they are threatening to pull out and causing confusion?
"They have been agitating that the Presidency of CAN must come from the South. They are appendage of PDP and PDP themselves. They are known for double standards. A man of God should not be double speaking.”

Mind ur language, u don't have the right to insult our Bishops, rev sisters or the rev fathers and u even say we ain't Christians, at this time and age u still say "Catholics worship Mary"u are obviously ignorant and u need to do ur research b4 pointing fingers. If u can celebrate ur pastor in that manner why blame the Catholics for honoring the (virgin) mother of Jesus Christ. U really need to see beyond ur anger b4 u bring some thing bad to ur self. You knw how a son feels when u insult the mother, it same with Christ.

Catholics are known for unscriptural doctrines(praying to mother mary when we knw only holy spirit n jesus intercedes, using rosaries, saying pope is infallingble, victimizing anyone that renounce either as a father or sister, singing to dead ones n giving them offerings at their burial ground, they hardly teach the bible, instead they teach their institutional laws, many homo fathers ve confessed, pope alxander VI's son cesare borgia bribed n cajoled michaelangelo to draw him as picture of jesus, which became the famous jesus picture you are all seeing around today, just google cesare borgia,he's known for killiong his brother shared girlfriend with him n d gurl later got married to his younger brother, was ordain bishop at fourteen just becos his father was pope n late vacate the pope to become head of vatican military so he can seize power and as later dared n cursed his father, all dis wasn't openly chriticised cos hierachy rules in catholic) so who send them? #maddingcrush

  11. This is a big blow to christendom I must say. The catholic faith is the biggest christian faith in Nigeria and this is bad enough for the unity of the christian community. As a christian this is just like washing our dirty linens in public, I just pray this is resolved pretty soon because this is bad, I am not a catholic but I agree a bit with CCN on some grounds of things stated and I think CAN has some changes to conform to.

When the Central Bank Governor said all these political-patronizing religious-cultural organizations should be banned and disbanded, all of them started to cry, we shall gradually see the reality of his message, they use such organizations to deceive we followers, to secure our obedience as well as use us for political/economical gains, yet only them and their wards eventually share the benefits even of the organizations goodies, start from their elections to posts to the very expensive schools they built which none is for the benefit of the followers they should care for.

  28. I saw that coming,it was long overdue. In our very eyes we saw CAN gradually assuming d state of a branch of political party.

Am not surprised,in as much as I find it quite appaling and unfortunate Instead of CAN spokesman attacking d issue raised,he choose to attack personnality. Instead of convincing the few Catholics who may not buy the idea of pulling away from CAN he choose to attack our Bonus Pastor Cardinal Olorunfemi Onaiyekan.
What is the place of CAN presidency in the issue raised?
Is Pastor Tunde Bakare also a priest of the Catholic church?
Was it a Catholic priest dat labelled CAN a branch of PDP.
And who is the CAN spokesman referring to as "They" is it John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who he claimed is agitating for CAN presidency,or every other Christian like my humble self who is a Catholic by birth, but a non denominational Christian in nature?
I weep for the body of Christ in Nigeria.

Just like the politicians who have managed to squander the overwhelming potentials of Nigeria so are the Pastors.
The advent of the pentecostal movement in Nigeria came with so much good will and public approval but sadly, pentecostal preachers have been unable to maximise the popularity by living examplary lives, nation building and social responsibility. Opting instead to build empires unto themselves at the expense of social responsibility, the welfare of their flocks and the future of the Christian faith.
One thing Pentecostal Pastors of Pastor Ayo Oristsejafor's hue failed to understand is the great level of responsibility that comes with power and influence.
If they know this the CAN president ll not take a private jet gift from President Goodluck Jonathan and turn CAN into the praying arm of the PDP.

  68. If you do not like what is going on in a place and you feel you can't do anything,it's alright to leave! A few centuries ago people left the catholic church and were labelled 'protestants'. I wish the 'conscience of the nation' and 'voice of the voiceless truly speak up when the situation demands it even when their own members are at fault.

It's high time the so called religious institutions start stepping to confront & holding the Nigerian govt accountable for the ongoing social injustices rather than being an accomplices by keeping quiet.
The religious institutions both christain & muslim are just as guilty as the govt when they use religion to play pilitics.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think it's highly ignorant that people are coming here and expressing how happy they are for CCN's withdrawal and on top of that want to claim 'proud to be a Catholic.' You are the same people that are causing divisions in the house/ways/things of God. Granted that issues developed with CAN, as a CHRISTIAN(body of Christ, unity), do you considered the best choice/solution pulling out? Does that resolve anything but to cause further division that already exist within the Christian community? When the going got hard for Christ before His crucifixion for OUR sins, did he quit or withdraw to go think through whether He will go through it or not? Our leaders keep forgetting their roles in leadership and the whole essence for unification. Yes, problems ensued(were you never expecting for there to be one because we live in a perfect world?), rather than attacking the issue or maybe providing reports on the problem-solving techniques that have been utilized to remedy the situation, you want to tell me that you are temporarily withdrawing, and some Catholics here are ecstatic about that because of what, inferior or superior complex? Here cheering and proudly claiming Catholic because you feel that you are better than your other Christian brothers and sisters. You should be ashamed. IT'S NOT ABOUT YOUR DENOMINATION, IT'S ABOUT YOUR FAITH. Please people, let's eliminate this mind-set that this group is better the other, it gets us nowhere, it only hinders progress.

Rather than passing unsavoury comments all you need to do is fast and pray that God will send a revival into christianity. That He will purge His church and expose everything that is contrary to His will. That he will cleanse our land. Why not leave the men of God alone either fake or genuine, holy or sinful, decent of corrupt? Let God decide who is right of wrong. We need urgent divine intervention in Nigeria before it's too late - please pray hard for this nation.

  128. The foundation of Catholic church is strong, i am even surprise catholic is in same body with pentecostal because their ways are very different. Church leaders should lead by example . Jesus christ even as God when he came lived a simple life, he did not acquire wealth or build house or run things with those in govt of that time. Instead he went about doing good, healing the sick and giving hope to hopeless . Christ understood the feeling of his followers .But what do we have today pastors that are material conscious , living very extravagant life and exploiting members . Catholic church is very right.

  134. You must agree with me that there’re two Christianity in existence (1) those who fight for God (2) those that God is fighting for.

But permit me to ask this question on how anyone can claim that he or she is called by God almighty to work for him, and yet a lot is happening around you both in your family, vicinity, city and country and the God you claim to be serving is not revealing any of the stratagem to you by exposing Satan and also give you solutions on how to overcome. So what makes you the servant of the almighty God? But always claim that spirit of God is ministering to you all the time.

Jesus therefore said to them again, Peace be unto you: as the Father hath sent me, even so send I you. (John 20:21)

As my Father hath sent me - As God sent me to preach, to be persecuted, and to suffer; to make known his will, and to offer pardon to men, so I send you. This is the design and the extent of the commission of the ministers of the Lord Jesus. He is their model; and they will be successful only as they study his character and imitate his example. This commission he proceeds to confirm by endowing them all with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Even so send I you - As I was sent to proclaim the truth of the Most High, and to convert sinners to God, I send you for the very same purpose, clothed with the very same authority, and influenced by the very same Spirit.

Your CAN leaders are nothing but teachers of Pharisees of this generation.

  148. Firstly, I'll really like to comment on the statements made by some people on here. I guess we are all learned, we should be careful with the usage of our words and stop making ungaurded comments. We should act like people that passed through schools. On the issue at hand, i've always been against Men Of God acquiring wealth. Remember, Jesus Himself who had all the opportunity to become "rich" lived a very lowly and humble life, even the only time the bible recorded he rode a donkey, it donkey wasn't for him. The bible says, "Thou shall not Judge" but the truth must be told. We complain about the situation of things in Nigeria, but so surprising, the men of God are now part of the super rich in Nigeria... Jesus, who wasn't as rich as our pastors of today fed 5000 people with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, and yet in some members of a church can't afford 3 square meals. It is appalling to hear that, a pastor was given a private jet as a gift. There is a word called HUMILITY. And money used to purchase this Jet could have helped to save a life or lives. The name of God shouldn't be turned to a "Brand Name" or be used as a money making venture. Speak the truth even though you might be killed for it. All the Apostles suffered persecution, and even till their death, they never stop speaking it truth. We are Christians "Christ-Like"... We all should start acting as one.
