‘Principal, two nurses conducted virginity test on us’

Fifteen-year-old Janet (not real name), one of the victims of the virginity test allegedly conducted on pupils of Ajuwon Senior High School, Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, spoke with Punch correspondent, Temitayo Famutimi.  Excerpt below...
What happened in your school on December 10, 2012?
Rev. Olufunke Oladeojobi, our school principal (pictured inset), came to some Senior Secondary School One classes and announced that she would be conducting virginity test on us. She marched us with the assistance of some members of staff into her office and thereafter conducted the test on us.
What do you think prompted her to conduct the test?
Our principal is a disciplinarian and she always lament on the assembly ground that she used to receive reports that we (female pupils) were in the habit of sleeping around with our classmates and technicians.
Did she force the test on you?
Yes, it was like a form of compulsion because she went after some of us who ran away after claiming to be virgins and compelled them to take the test. At least I know two of them like that. The first person who did the test was in that category. She didn’t do it willingly.

How many of you did the test?
Ten of us but initially, she said she was going to conduct the test on all the pupils who claimed to be virgins but she stopped after she discovered a pupil who had lost her virginity from the first group comprising 10 pupils.

Where did the test take place and how many people conducted it?
The test was carried out in the principal’s office. A bed was placed on the floor of the office and our principal and two other nurses were there with two other members of staff. One of the nurses works in our school’s sick bay while the other nurse was invited.

Who conducted the test on you?
It was the resident nurse in our school that conducted the test on me. Our principal was at the door entrance and she (the principal) ushered me in when it got to my turn.

 How was the test conducted?
The resident nurse removed the glove she used for the person before me and wore another one. She positioned me on the bed, removed my pants, spread my legs and observed my private parts with her eyes. She then dipped two fingers into my private parts. The principal was beside her that time and the nurse told her (principal) that I was a virgin.

What was your principal’s reaction when the nurse said you are a virgin?
The principal said I should not mess around with boys and she gave me an Ogun State Government customised exercise book.

Did you lose blood after the test?
I did not lose blood but I heard that some people lost blood. I left the vicinity of the principal’s office after the test was conducted on me.

Did she conduct the test on those who were menstruating?
No she didn’t. They asked them to go whenever they noticed it and gave them exercise books.

How did you feel after the test?
I didn’t understand the gravity of the incident until our senior colleagues in school started threatening to cause mayhem after the test. I told my mum when I got home.

What did the principal do to the person who was discovered to have lost her virginity?
When I came back for my bag, I saw the girl who was said to have lost her virginity kneeling down in her office and I saw the principal talking tough. She wrote down her name on the black board in her office and announced verbally that she had been suspended.

The principal has since been suspended. I think she should be arrested. She's scarred some of these young girls for life!

  2. Even if there is any moral justification by the principal for wanting to get those tests done, its highly not acceptable when its been done compulsorily or without the consent of the parents. Its just too crude!!

  3. This woman!!! I don't just get her point (no one really does anyway). So, the exercise book is an "award" for being a virgin. Hu is she? God???.

  8. This type of intrusive vaginal probe is reminiscent of the medieval times when kings and princes were captivated and spellbound by virgin brides. It is anathema in this day and age, because it is easier to find pastors resurrecting the dead, than to find virgins in Junior Secondary Schools let alone High Schools. Virginity tests are antithetical to the scientific method. Results of virginity tests are still questionable even when conducted by trained Gynecology experts, let alone when performed by a common school principal using an archaic rule of the THUMB. And that’s why many of the girls experienced uncontrollable hemorrhaging after they were forcefully fingered.
And can we be sure that the so called Reverend Principal does not have homosexual/ lesbian proclivity. With her position and certainly education, she should have referred the girls to an approved medical clinic for any medical tests, from which virginity tests should have been precluded. As a K-12 and post-secondary academic expert, I think chastity and celibacy are the least of the problems in Nigeria’s educational institution. A strong curriculum, enhanced epistemology, and parental participation are fundamental. That woman’s conduct is criminal, and she should be apprehended ASAP.

  23. People should not be compelled to such tests, whether virgins or not is not a criteria of being responsible, though i wish all unmarried ladies to remain virgins till marriage as God has instituted it, but this type of test should be a self decided one. the principal has acted wrongly.

  24. Oga o....it should be the biz of the parents and not school.

  40. Who send am message.
It's a bad thing to do that...what's her tea if they are virgins or not...advise them like a mother and a teacher that you are and leave the rest to them and their parents. Of what benefit(s) will the test be to her or to the young girls now. She that conducted the test, was she deflowered in her husband's house.
    Madam do good.

  41. This principal is crazy she has no moral or educational ground to justify her action.she should be locked in an assalum

  42. The woman is a downlow lesbian, she picked the 10 girls she's been fantasizing over. Most downlow gays always cling to religion cause they are hoping jesus will cure them of their sexUality. Sad really

  43. I suspect rituals. Virginity, blood and Menstruation...that's more blood. Let's watch that principal in the next ten years if she doesn't become a millonaire. This is wrong in so many ways. In the process of checking if they are virgins, she may have disvirgined so many of them whether they bled or not. Blood isn't always a sign of virginity...retarded principal. The nurse that came from outside...what is her qualification?. Nigerians keep quiet in a lot of things in the name of hypocritical Morality. Anyways...if na my pikin dey for dt school and u come try that rubbish eeeh... Her case no go end for suspension. Ssssmmmhhh. Rockagirl.

  44. I understand and appreciate the intention of the head teacher, but anything done on a student must first go through the parents. She was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  45. 38 outta 300 students in SS1..these are gals btw the ages of 13 and 15.

The statistic is enough for the principal to discuss with the parents of the gals. She had good intentions but she should have contacted their parents. Thats why there is a Parents Teachers Association (PTA). If that wasnt enough she should have taken the matter to the ministerial board highlighting the early exposure of students to sex and the dangers it presents. She should have even taken steps towards protecting the upcoming students from following such early exposure.

  46. Honestly I'm a virgin and if I were there I wouldn't have owned up to anything (you'll have to kill me first). Those girls just don't know their rights. And I think ironically it's even girls like these that can even EASILY give up their virginity. I mean if you can let a woman violate you, what is stopping you from letting a man do it. I think the smartest virgins among them simply did not own up to it.
PS: I still think this was rape.

  47. This Dr Augustine can so write grammar and essay!! Kuddos to u... As for the Rev( principal) who send u message! If there aren't virgins of what use is that to her? She needs to be locked up...she's just a peadophile simple!
