Bishop Oyedepo asked to pay N2 billion over kindergarten’s death

The General Overseer of Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo has been asked to pay N2 billion within 14 days as general damages or face legal action, for the death of three-year-old Imienfan Omokaro who got drowned at Kingdom Heritage Model School operated by Winners Chapel in Benin.

A letter written by Omokaro’s Counsel, Prince Peter E. Uwadiae-Igbinigie and, dated November 28, 2012 and made available to journalists in Benin, explained that the amount was “for the callous and senseless killing of our client’s daughter, Miss Imienfan Omokaro.”

Besides, Mr. Omokaro’s lawyers want Kingdom Heritage Model School to tender unreserved apology in three national newspapers, warning that if the demands were not met within 14 days, “we have the irrevocable instructions of our client to commence legal action against the school (Kingdom Heritage Model School) and Church (Winners Chapel) without any further correspondence from this Chambers.”

Imienfan Omokaro, a KG I pupil of Kingdom Heritage Model School, was said to have drowned in a drum of water in a toilet in the school on November 1, 2012.

Also, teachers of the school allegedly did not inform her mother when she came to pick her from school on that fateful day until late in the evening.

The school authorities and Winners Chapel had reportedly kept the girl for more than an hour, praying for her before finally taking her to Irowa Hospital in Benin, where she was confirmed dead.
The girl had died before being brought to hospital, doctors said.

    1. Most people may think: what's the point? The 2b won't bring their baby back. Legal action, sometimes,is taken to force people to be more responsible in future. So that the same unfortunate incident doesn't happen to someone else. We can't always choose to let things slide, that's not how to care about humanity.

Have u asked urselves maybe d child climbed the toilet bowl so her little hands can get to d drum to scoop water n accidentally fell head first in it n struggled to get to d surface?coz am sure the careless teachers told her to flush afterwards while they were chatting away like idiots n a 3yrs old girl was drowning on top of that instead of taking her to d hospital they were trying to raise the dead.

A court action will definitely make all these people more responsible and stop being negligent.
They negligently let her fall into the drum and instead of rushing her to the hospital they prayed for an hour till she died and THEN took her to the hospital. This is someone's child. You people need to put yourselves in her family's position before judging.

    2. What you don't understand is that the money they are claiming is not equal to the child's life, its just a punitive measure to get the bishop more involved in the goings-on in the school. Truth is when he parts with such a huge amount or the likes of it, he'll be obligated to absolve more professionals who are dedicated and experienced thereby avoiding such blunders.
Its not about Oyedepo, if it happened elsewhere, I believe same would've been the case.

D water level in d drum was probably low, so, in tryn to reach d water, she fell headlong into d drum. She was neither able to get out or stand upright or call for help.

They're obviously NOT going to get the 2 billion and so I won't be surprised if their lawyers told them to start high since it'll probably get reduced. What did you want them to ask for? 100000? So that he'll pay 20000 from 1 percent of Sunday collection in the end abi? And did NONE of you read the part about them wasting an hour instead of taking her to the hospital? You see "man of God" and you start acting righteous, like you would accept it if it was your child. And who is this idiot asking why a KINDERGARTEN child was careless enough to drown herself? Why was she not being monitored? Nigerians...I swear it's because of our own stupid thinking and wickedness that we're in the mess we're in. You cannot put a price on the life of a child, agreed, but you can sure as hell get some retribution when one is unjustly taken from you. No one is asking why she wasn't monitored, why she wasn't promptly rushed to the hospital, why the school owned by a MAN OF GOD has not come out to make a statement, and you're persecuting the father of the child. Tufiakwa. Nonsense.

why are people making this look like the parents of the diseased are trying to exploit the situation, most of u read on this same blog about the woman going in 80years jail term b'cos kids left in her care died(did she kill them? no but her negligence did). the sentence is to deter others and ensure that ppl are more responsible. the Bishop can decide that the principal and teachers of that branch of the sch should raise the money......its his choice.the truth remains, lesson must be thought.

  78. its funny at the way most people are chanting gibberish on here,
it has got everything to do with the owner of the school regardless if he was a pastor or a minister of pension.
they are suing the business for negligence, carelessness and probably breaking the health and safety law (for those who dont know it exists in negeria despite we barely keep it) for having a drum of water on unsecured and in a way someone can go inside and get trapped (esp in children environment)
so, we all should quite these shit we talking of simply cos one is a man of God. the owner of the company is running a business and they are suing the owner. something for tot, what if the owner was rtd olusegun obasanjo or tinubu? would u call it extortion?
2B is a small price to start with.
in a more civilized environment, they will lock the sch down and probably lock the church down for health and safety measures then NGOs can sue them separately or the local state (council)
My condolence goes to the bereaved heart. no funds can cover the loss of a loved one but something can be done as compensation. even military personnel that die @warfront gets compensation from the govt to their family. dana victims got compensation and extra fine on the company.
    God bless Nigeria.

Truth be told, they have not said what truly happened in that school.who is that moron that said they were trying their luck praying for the girl. How dare them do trial and error with someone's child, haba. What rubbish is this, one whole hour before taking her to the hospital. Mcheeewww. For those of you blabbing what you know nothing about, the pastor was added to the suit cos he is the owner of the school, am sure the first defendant is the school itself. Meanwhile I advice the lawyer to add the names of the teachers or minders or whoever was responsible for watching that child to answer in their personal capacity. For those of you who said N2bil is too much, if I was d counsel I would sue dem for all dey hv got, N2bil in ma opinion is too small,nd I would also include that the school's license be revoked. Nonsense, some people just come here nd spit out trash, forgeting to ask themselves how they would feel it were to happen to them.

It also very obvious water wasn't running in the toilet and the little one might have been trying to scoop water to clean her which the nannies ought to ave bin on attention to do. These is an high level of negligence of the school cos it took them real long to notice d little girl absence or she would ave bin save. From the judicial angle the parent can sue the class teacher, nannies, class assistance, headteacher, school and the winners worldwide cos the school is an affiliation of it and created under it name. Even the 2 billion is even too small for their little lost. May the soul of the little child rest in peace. And naija should always know wen to do away wit sentiment.

They are not asking for the money because they believe they will get it, it's just to make a point and I do believe that little girl is worth more than 2Billion dollars not even naira. Oyedepo owns the school so therefore should take responsibility of the negligence of his staff.

    ReplyDelete
  86. R.I.P to the little girl. A lot of you think its impossible to drown in a drum of water, try putting ur head in first.a 30 year old man would get drowned in it sef. My younger brother tried that and was fortunate to survive this same incident some years back. You might call it ignorance but really, how many of you can think a drum of water could cause that much harm? It could have happend to any one. And the two billion? Common!!!that just shows how ready lawyers are to extort wealthy people. I trust papa, the case would be on forever, they will win d case may b wen 2 billion dosent have any value in the economy...and dats forever. KuZe!

    ReplyDelete
  87. A lot of the people commenting I reckon are not parents, because if they were they would understand that 2 billion, 5 billion or 1 trillion is nothing compared to the life of a precious child you will never ever see again. The parents of this child are very angry and disappointed, 2 billion or 1 trillion is not to bring back their daughter but to punish the school, this is the only way those responsible for the death of their baby daughter will share and understand their pain .

Having said that I don't know whose idea it was to drag the bishop into this. Winners Chapel is a corporate charitable entity exclusive from the Bishop. The school belongs to Winners chapel not Bishop Oydepo. How the internal and global organization runs will determine the amount of compensation. For example are the branches and social enterprises such as schools, are they autonomous or do they form part of the corporate body , thus remitting revenue to same? Finally the ultimate resolution between the bereaved parents and the church is an amicable settlement out of court, where the words, 'sorry' and 'forgiveness' is most paramount.

  98. Linda, am not sure how true this is but i heard on news when this was first reported that the lil girl went to the bathroom (unaccompanied) and was found in the drum much later. My simple question is this....Growing up, i know nurseries had 2 carers per classroom - such that one remained in class, should any child need to go to the bathroom (accompanied by the other), if this was the case, which i doubt, this little girl would still be alive. So what exactly happens in that school? one carer per class? Why? To cut cost or what? No doubt the parents are agrieved and are allowed to sue and charge whatever amount they deem appropriate, they should damn the price and sue the school, that action will save more lives, you never know. As much as i agree that Oyedepo owns winners chapel, he cannot be everywhere, someone must have been put in charge of that school. They should be made to pay for it, other schools will learn from this instance. Its so sad.

To those saying 2b wnt bring back d child u are right and wrong, it wnt bring back d child, it wnt pay back for d labour, or love that has bn giving to her in her short 3 yrs, but it will give d family joy that they got justice, they can decide to take d teacher to court if they have a good lawyer for second degree murder, no dey decided to sue, and wen u sue it means u make the owner of d organization pay for ur pains and hurt cos people love money wen dry part with it they feel pain.oyedepo always say he owns his schos not his church, I dnt care who owns it, he is sha d CEO of church and school,So let dem sue him for his best dime. Dey might use d money to honor d memory of their child, and d real question is way was d lil girl doing in d bathroom in attended to, she can't clean herself up, if u are a mother u will know this, even 5 yrs would have peed half on her body and 3 yrs old can't sit in d toilet seat alone. So there is something the school isn't saying. If as a mother u have a child in that school leave sentiments aside withdraw ur child, they aren't monitored properly, she is 3 bnot 10.she shouldn't be anywhere in d alone fir a sec sef,so I say sue their ass out, and dnt bring thrash talk about church, the school is being sued so the CEO/ chairman is d man affected, regardless if whether he is a pastor, imam, bishop or watever.

He should be able to donate $6million out of his $150billion worth now....haba! Kini big deal....show you are a true man of GOD! mtchewwwwwwww

  114. We are talking about a three-year-old girl here and you are asking how did she get herself drowned. Really? What are the reasons parents put their kids in a private school? The school is responsible for this kid's death.
