Lagos will no longer allow other states’ number plates - says Govt

The Lagos State Government yesterday said it would no longer allow the use of vehicles with number plates from other states of the federation for commercial transportation in the state.

It also advised residents with private vehicles to change to the state’s number plates to reflect the fact that they are living in Lagos.

The Director, Vehicle Inspection Office, Mr, Gbolahan Toriola, said the measure was meant to achieve “sanity, standard, safety and security” as stipulated by the road traffic law.

Toriola spoke at the vehicle inspection safety campaign organised by the Ministry of Transportation in conjunction with the Political and Legislative Bureau for commercial drivers in Ikeja.
He said, “There is nothing wrong in bringing commercial buses from other states. But if you must use it in Lagos, you have to change the colour and re-register it with us so that we have your information in our database.

“This is a standard procedure. As a matter of fact, it you have lived in a state for about three months, you are no longer a visitor and therefore you must change your number plate to reflect the state. It is done in America and other developed nations.

“Of course, this provision did not affect inter-state vehicles carrying passenger from other state. But we don’t expect them to pick or drop passengers at every bus stop. There are dedicated bus stops and parks for inter-state vehicles. If they violate this and we get them, they will face our law.

“You must put waste basket in your buses; there must be first aid box; you must carry extra tyres. These are what our law stipulates.”

The VIO boss who highlighted the provisions of the traffic law, advised them to cooperate with the government to ensure security in the state.

A director in the ministry, Mr. Bola Matanmi, also advised the drivers not to turn themselves to traffic officials, but instead apply to the ministry so that they would be given a Special Marshall status.
He added that the union would be given the privilege to choose the colour of the uniform for drivers and conductors.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Political and Legislative Affairs, Mr. Muslim Folami, said the traffic law, which has 43 sections and four schedules was for the interest of Lagosians. He urged the drivers to submit to the law for sanity and safety.

    1. I can see most people didn't read the post. The emphasis is on commercial vehicles in lagos while inter-state buses will be permitted as long as they are simply dropping and picking people at bus stops. Private cars have a 3month period of relocating to lagos before being asked to change so that one saying you drive here and there in the US do you see its possible now? I think traffic is a big problem n lagos and it makes transport expensive and productivity low. Everywhere becomes far from anywhere. Fashola is foig the right thing and he will deal with any officer found exploiting the law. He's not contesting again but u will appreciate him when he's gone. Whicch other state is like Lagos?

  6. lagos is turning to something else inside nigeria ,here in vienna austria people from hungary italy slovak slovenia germany they still use thier countries number here in austria,so what is it about this lagos sef a country inside a country?one dey oil producing states will demand that for you to work in oil company u must come from niger delta, the same lagos that said if u commit trafic offence in lagos u will go to one year in prisonment,u take somebodys dad or mum and put in prison for one year cus he or she drive against the trafic the worst u can do to the offender is to fine he or she just like they do in addvance country

  9. At first I thought the Governor Of Lagos & its Executives were educated, now I know they are educated insane politicians who know nothing about formulating laws...Of all the reasons for creating these laws, they didn't talk about the Unity of Nigeria. So he expects someone who just relocated to Lagos because of his job/white collar job,to change his Plate number? If other State Governors pass same law in their respective states, will there be 'UNITY' in Nigeria...Lagosian & Nigerians, let us not be foolish to accept these laws anymore. It's going to affect us one way or anoda.

  11. I got to say without reading the whole post I was like here we go again, more pointless rules. But by the time i finished i got to say its a good idea providing theres not a sneaky way of one person in charge collecting lots of money (which likely it will happen) BUT at the end of the day if Lagos is trying to build a better infrastructure and security then this is not a bad start. Yes some people will loose out but in the long run as long as it works its another step for Lagos to be a better and safe state even if private residents will do the same.

  29. It's the right thing to do. This is being done for several reasons. Revenues, security and logistics. If you live in Lagos and your car is registered in Abuja is wrong because Lagos state is not utilizing the registration fees you paid in Abuja. When the need to track your license and registration arises, it takes time to connect Abuja back and forth. Lagos state needs to re word the language so that people can understand. If they stopped you today and your license stated your address as Lagos and registration is Abuja address you should be given a warning but if you are stopped in January of 2013 and your registration has not been changed to Lagos address then be ready to pay the fine. @eeeao

For the commercial buses it made sense but for private cars you must be joking. So conductor n bus driver go get uniform join? Hmmm ok. All you had to do was make ppl who r resident in lagos register their cars with lag ware va That way, you still hv their datas. Sha I don't see this law being obeyed sha messed up.

  40. Fashola has obviously ran out of ideas, his advisers have become gluttons, his legislatora have become out of touch. This is still Lagos state of Nigeria and not Lagos state of Africa. Fashola has been fighting for true federalism, is this also what true federalism is all about? i blame Tinubu that brought you in the second time and Lagosians that voted you in. Well other states will also make tha same law. and we shall see where you go with this. The other ime you were asking dat Lagos be given special recognition for robbing the nation and now you are trying to get that by all means. Lets see where you get with this.

  51. Fashola is an idiot!!! Linda make sure you publicize this post. See all the roads in Lagos have got to their worst condition yet fashola is working, they forget that good roads should be the number one in Lagos traffic laws and if the roads are not properly worked and managed that him fashola and his cabinet should also be sent to the years imprisonment. For all the bad roads in Lagos, Okota, Apapa Oshodi. Do you know how man lives that has been lost in Lagos due to bad road...I still have a lot to write. What about Nigerians using their plate numbers in order countries we have not been asked to change them, how on eart could plate number be amongst Nigerian problems the governments is only effective on the things that will remove money from the masses pocket forcefully and that is when you will see the laws working, how can you ask a man that was transferred from Abuja to come and work and live in Lagos that he must change his plate number before he can be able to live and work in Lagos. This is absolutely unacceptable they are all rogues.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This is a stupid law. Many of the cars we import into this country land in Lagos and most of them have to register in Lagos before driving down to the East. If the Governors in the South East and South South enact similar laws, then there would be so much confusion and people will just be paying twice for same expenditure.

Let us not divide this country by enacting laws like this as it could be very detrimental if all states beging to enact law to favours its citizens.

  60. To prevent theft, some Nigerians inscribed numbers on the body parts of their vehicles including the engine. The LASG should think seriously about the implication of vehicles with different number plates from what is inscribed on the body of the vehicle. The LASG should shelve this idea because law enforcement agents will harass and extort money from vehicle owners

  61. Thats the height ,lagosians should caution their Gov before they are forced to end their surname with lagos if they have stayed up to three months in lagos .eg ikeji-lagos,adebayo-lagos,hassan-lagos,akpabio-lagos

  63. See nigerians, so used to living like a bunch of uncivilized animals. They detest progress because it pushed them from the petty comfort of their filth.

Nobody is going to arrest you for driving in Lagos with a plate number from another state.

For those of us who have a little more than cheap Chinese plastic for brains, we can't but appreciate the job Fashola is doing in lagos. So far, the only policies of his i find fault with are the "no okada on express" (cause there's no alternative) and the "limit prepaid rent to 6 months" policies.

Lagos needs more strict traffic laws. I'm tired of having to do James Bond style maneuvers to get to work in the morning. With commuters running 6 lanes on a road built for 4. Plus why can't everyone just pick a lane and stick to it? In countries with laws, all these would be dangerous driving, a ticket able offense.
