    1. Fashola barned Okada in the whole of Ikeja since the past 1month plus now. All dis stories about him barning okada in some areas only is not true. He barned okada everywhere, making life miserable for everyone. He thinks its only the poor that enters okada, even the rich enters okada when the traffic becomes unbearable. I have nothing against him barning okada, but he should have provided other means of transportation in Lagos and also provide jobs for those men that he stopped riding bikes and destroyed about 3,000 of their bikes.

  4. Why impond people's bikes and destroy them like that. Creat jobs and employment for these men, ensure that they have a means of livelihood before destroying what they use to feed their families.

  5. This is a case of the hand that feeds you can as well smack your ass... every okada man he used for campaign and got their bikes would have really felt betrayed...how sad. such harsh decision for your own people without any form of alternative for them....if the level of robbery in the society increase, the same person would be worried not knowing that his previous decisions caused the present calamity...i really hope he knows what he's doing

    1. Don't be speechless my dear brother. The thing is that the Nigerian politicians and the Nigerian masses are two parallel lines that can never meet.My cousin who graduated from ESUT, during the last general elections was the youth leader of his party, he helped a present house of reps member to mobilise and coordinate the youth to vote for this him in Anambra. The now house member wanted to pay him but my cousin told him not to that he should just help him get a job if he wins. The long and short of the story is that this man won and till this day he has never picked my cousin's calls. My cousin came to abuja to see him and for one whole week this man snubbed him and told his aids not to allow him enter his office. This was the same man that we eat and drink with when he was still begging for our votes, most times we even fuelled his car for him then, but now he's on the top and everybody even those that suffered for him during his election can go to hell.

Many or most aren't educated, so they really need their okada job to feed their family, esp. in a country like Nigeria where graduates can't even land any kinda job.

  18. Ah-ah Linda that’s an unfair analogy now. Despite the relative “usefulness” of helping commuters get around, everyone agrees these okada riders are nothing but a terrible societal menace. Apart from easing commute, the only other tangible argument that people have against the government's stance is the perceived increase in crime that might ensue from jobless okada riders. Putting things in perspective however, unlike certain other sates, the Lagos state govt didn’t totally ban okadas, it only restricted them from plying 475 of the 9,100 routes in the state which translates to about 0.052% of the total routes. These routes are mainly bridges, expressways and double-carriage roads where there is a greater chance of these okada riders wreaking havoc not only to traffic, but their lives, and those of their passengers. I don’t understand how any right thinking person will
see this as a problem. Or is our quest to reach our destination more important than the lives and limbs lost to these riders?

    4. I've never been on one and don't intend to.It's easy to castigate them for recklessness but if the appropriate authorities do their jobs n enforce the law i believe there'll be a drastic reduction in their so-called recklessness. Also remember they've helped stop criminals i.e. Kidnappers, robbers etc. I think Tinubu's trying to discredit Fashola because of his rising profile n possibly to stop him from attaining higher office after his tenure runs out.All in all this move wasn't in the interest of most Lagos residents but that of a very select few.

      Delete
    5. Help me ask them!! When it comes to repairs it becomes federal roads, but he can ban okada from federal roads...

      Delete
    6. No I am not Fashola, just his brother LOL...but seriously, 1. I'm sure not all of the banned roads are federal roads. 2. Even if they all are, the safety and enforcing of traffic laws on ALL roads falls under the jurisdiction of the state in which they lie. the role of the federal govt is to build and maintain the roads (which they are not even meeting their end of the bargain). So to answer your question, that's the right of the state govt.

The keyword here is RESTRICT, I do not see why Okadas with their recklessness should be on the highways and business districts. Like Fashola said, go to hospitals and see what they have caused. Stop being biased in the most ignorant way Linda Ikeji.

You'll actually look out for okada trying to speed across even though you have right of way.
Hard hats without starps cannot protect them nor their passengers in case of accidents. Linda I am trying not to call you names. Just don't be enemy of progress because Lagos is the only state that is trying to compete with foreign cities. Wonder why you didn't try to use okada when you were in the US. Mtchew

  25. Yes Linda, that's life. Life is when miscreants and social misfits increasingly use these motorcycles to rob and wreck havoc in the society.

Life is when most of these motorcycle riders conduct themselves so recklessly on the roads and eventually cause sometimes fatal and always terrible accidents.

Life is what is happening at Igbobi Orthopedic Hospital everyday, when countless victims of theses okada men are brought in to have various limbs chopped off.

Many of these men and boys are from the east and the north. I suggest they go back to their states and let their state governors find work for them. Lagos is grossly over-populated.

We do not need these bikes in Lagos anymore. We've had enough.

  27. Oh dear! With the majority's mentality in Nigeria, we can ever move forward. How did people move around before okadas pls add to that there was no BRT then except death traps called molues. We REALLY need to change or mentality and see the bigger picture. All we do is complain even when laws are put in place for our own good. We need to learn to think out of the box, see the bigger picture! Please analyze situations properly before deciding on it. We need a total change of mindset.

And yes he gave them helmets(I don't know of bikes) during elections but they we all agree they have totally misused the opportunity given to them to operate.

As the other person said, it's not a total ban so I don't see the problem. Also I hope people know there are no more okadas in Abuja.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Tiwalade, you were not with me at Bishop Aboyade Cole on Tuesday when I had to trek under the hot sun to Sanusi Fafunwa with mu suit and tie cos there were no bikes.

So they only banned them from 0.05% of all roads abi? Deceive yourself. Fisrstly, the length of the banned roads and the frequency of usage makes ur statistics laughable. Further more, in most parts of Lagos, you can't go from one unbanned road to another without passing through banned roads. so whats the point.

And you really need to mark out these unbanned roads to your greedy police men and extortionist Lastma guys o. Because they are impounding bikes in every nook and cranny.

Between 7 and 9am on working days, hundreds of bikes move from the Marina area to VI without being impounded because thats the way half of the working populace (including police and lastma guys) get to work.

By the way Linda, perfect analogy.

  33. I think in Naija we need some bit of consistency. People scream about the menace of bikes, rules are put in place, the rules are flouted and punishment is meted out and the same people who screamed about the menace come back to 'feel' for the bike people?

They have been banned from over 400 routes..How many routes are there in Lagos?

There is no love in the heart of the city. If you can't survive the city go back to your village. There was a time when bikes didn't exist in Lagos and people got around. Besides everyone who has ever used a bike has had one narrow or near miss.

Linda this picture is very very WRONG!! I don't like people who insult progress they were not restricted from operating in Lagos State just some areas. Every state that has placed a ban on okada riders didn't totally restrict them from the whole state okada still operates even in ABUJA. Fashola didn't win because he campainged with okada riders he won because of the gOod works he's doing. Linda use your blog to promote progress not insult it! I'm in the medical field, do you know the havoc okada riders cause every single day? Come to the Accident & Emergency ward and see how many patients were put there by okada riders including the riders themselves! I believe they were restricted from major roads. I'm truly disappointed in you linda for this post, I thought you were enlighted. This post is just down right STUPID if you want to talk about the Ban, write an expose on this how they can create jobs/survive (although they will. The okada riders in the other states didn't die) not this RUBBISH! Truly Disappointed.

So the way okadas drive is ok? 10000 okadas that were seized were all stolen during the fuel protest which is why they decided to crush seized okadas instead of letting uniformed men come and steal and resell them.

I was against the crushing as I felt they could auction them out or make the offenders pay fine but I am very happy and fully support taking them off major highways. Okadas should never have been allowed in the system in the first place.

Okada has been banned in Abuja, Enugu, PH... And they all migrated to lagos and have been a menace. Was living in PH then and people thought they won't survive in PH without okada but no one remembers or miss them there today. The way some of them drive makes you afraid for them. Let Okadas stay off major roads. If they refuse, let them be banned completely.

Long live Fashola, may God continue to give you more wisdom to put in place policies that will keep Lagos in front.

  53. @Mrs. Jacqueline Okafor please try to be civilized with the way you address people,Linda is not a KID she is a grown a*s chick with feelings. If you want to be practical in your analysis of what goes on in your Medical "planet" open your senses too to realize that road accident is just a normal epidemic that goes on in the human society everyday whether be it "okada" riders or have you witnessed an NNPC tank driver before?Pray you don't while driving some of the drivers are into drugs, marijuana before taking to the street causing a road accident involving hundreds of lives wasted. If you want to be realistic in your judgement with the state governor provide a means for them too ease the pains and sufferings of their family, because after this ban little kids won't have their school fees paid anymore because their Dad's happens to be the only means of livelihood which sadly is "OKADA" riding.

  55. Abuja has no bikes except for places like karu. Within enugu city, bikes have been banned and replaced with keke napepe, I must say, I have not seen a single accident in enugu for over 3 months I came back and I can drive around town knowing that no bike man will do some Jackie Chan stunt for me and give me a mini heart attack. I don't always drive so some days I hv to go take a cab and then I miss okadas but once I See a cab or keke, I forget okada men. However in lagos I enter okada well sha, I even go from Thomas estate to lagos island mkt for 500 naira to avoid traffic but I must say, whenever I do I commit my soul to God and have my heart In my mouth. It's not easy yea but we will adapt real soon. For those calling linda an idiot sha it takes one to know one. For those insulting Fashola, God will only punish hi. If he didn't have the best interest of lagos state at heart. I can't say much but all I know is, those bike men should go back to their various states/villages and see if there is anything they can do for their states. It's not about running to the big city and everyone back home is expecting u to make it big when you don't meet up to their expectations you start looking for who to behead and use for rituals and who to rob of their sweat, become assassins and armed robbers and when caught you say it's the govt. As for me, i'm all for greener pastures but I will not kill myself in the process. I have said to myself, in as much as I read law, if I don't get a job within 6months post service, I am going to start my own business. I am learning a trade that ppl will frown at and I am not ashamed. Biko nu don't insult Fashola or linda or anybody of any tribe okada in as much as it helps us get around, it isn't the best for us. Someone raised the topic of rail roads, now that is a very good topic I think our rail roads need to be functional so as to reduce the amount of cars on our roads but trust some hoodlums to still find away to scare ppl off entering trains. I support Fashola in all his endeavours bcos to govern lagos, you need to be mean. Someone said tinubu is better than Fashola. Shaa I know tinubu did nothing for lagos and God is watching tinubu sha. Yes we may not support some of his decisions but I know that whatever decision be makes cannot be for his selfish purpose but for.the good of lagos and her residents. He myt as well be looting money and do no work but he chose to thread only where eagles dare. I'm igbo and I support Fashola and his decisions. Y'all should take it easy with the name calling oh abeg.

    1. Hope you know majority of the ppl that leave in new York don't own a car but the get around. Of course I won't compare new York and lagos State sha but really Nigerians are plain lazy. as for the so-called less privileged, there is nothing wrong with going back home. Enugu for instance has provided enuf cabs and kekds in place of bikes and everyone is moving forward. If I were some of these men, i'll take advantage of this situation. I'm a girl, I live in enugu and I have 3 kekes to my name. I can't ride around in them cos ppl will frown at it (not that I care really) so I gave it to 3 of the okada men I used to enter their bikes. After I made them see there is life outside okada, the went on to purchase their own. As for me i'm not working. Ut atleast my money isn't tainted. Living in the east is very easy, extremely cheap accommodations and less hassle compared to big cities. Girls in abj and lagos just giving decent girls bad name everywere just to be able to keep with paying house rent. Enugu for instance is growing and I wonder what the ppl I used to know in this town are doing in abj sleeping with married women and looking for working class lonely girl to decieve (that is the boys sha). Massive lands here and cheap yet no one to take advantage. As for me lord knows all I need is capital and I will establish myself in this town. Moral of my story sha, the fact that you made it to the big city and managed to get a bike now that it is taken away, doesn't mean your destinies have been averted. It only involves, replacing your poverty poisioned minds (of no hope) and with thinking hats. In the end whatever you choose to be assassin/robber, gala hawker or begger, you will only have urself to blame and not Fashola.

Some pple said other states wit Okada bann survived.yes, they survived by moving to Lagos state. Most of those states atleast have good roads n r not as immensely populated or as lag as lagos is.Fashola cud have started by working on the road, repairing d drainage system in Lagos, providing more buses n Brts n regulating cab fares but did he. Do all dat?NO.instead he wants Lagosians to WALK.dats an unfair governace.let's all remember dat most of us started out poor b4 we got our own cars.Fashola didn't only render okada riders jobless but also those dat sell okada spare parts as well.dis is a huge economic blow to Nigerians.yes, okadas cause lots of accident but so did cars b4 regulations were put in to checkmate a lot of things so why cant he enforce such rules n regulations to Okada riders instead of this.U guys say he didn't bann okadas outrightly?pls tell dat to d policemen dat ceased lots of bikes even from pples homes n those parked along the road.Fashola has FAILED.Hope he realises dat even though he isn't running for another term,he is single handedly destroying d chances of his party in d next election? Our problem in Naija is dat as far as we r not affected we don't speak up against injustice.Hope we all know d bann is not just for Okadas but also keke maruwas?how ll Lagosians dat don't have cars survive???

  64. Mrs Jacqueline Okafor, I think u are not serious. Y do u av to insult Linda just becos she is voicing her views. She has the right to air her opinion just the way u av a right to air urs. Pls, let's respect one another, it is downright rude for u to talk to her that way.
Yes Fashola is fighting a right course but he is doing that in a very wrong way. What is his administration doing to provide transportation for the teeming population of people in the state? We all pay our tax what are they doing with Tax payers money in the state. Mrs J, is Fashola telling us that his govt can't make alternatives for this Okada riders? Rem dis men are bread winners of their families. Do u knw d implication of this? No money! No food! The must disheartening part of these is dat so many children will be out of school.
That being said, I think this govt should av made an arrangement where all Okada rides would submit their bikes and get a Keke Napep in return. They should be attached to govt Micro finance banks where they pay an amount of money in instalments until they complete payment .
Then we can come out and say our leader is sensitive to the plight of the people. Pls, let us be our brothers keeper. Let's L♥√ع one another

Let me give you a little story. I had this cab guy I use in abuja then and one day we got talking and he opened up to me that he was once an okada rider in abuja, he heard rumors that there would be a bike ban in abuja and once he confirmed it, he sold his bike (when the value was still high) and made a down payment to someone for a taxi and promised to work off the rest bill, today barely 4-5years later he owns 3 cabs and have two people working the other cabs for him. Lesson of this story, he could have challenged, rioted the goverment, or waited for the goverment to put food in his mouth, but he knew he had a family somewhere depending on him and even though he was uneducated he thought smart and made a way for himself and he's family. When one venture fails you look at other options. No wise man cries over spilled milk. I repeat if they are wise they will go to surrounding states where bikes still operate and sell their bikes and start a new life!.

  69. Eradication of bikes on major roads is a good idea. We are talking about our lives here. People get injured cos of bike accidents everyday but I don't think this is the right solution to dis problem. If all the roads in lagos are tarred there will be no need for this bikes. The case of robbery will increase in lagos cos there are no jobs. You are takng their only source of income wat else are dey left with robbery. Which of this two options now hav the greatest risk. Think wisely fashola

  70. linda,We do have okada in tanzania, they are called boda boda over here. they are a source of accidents all the time, i think banning okada is not a solution what is requierd is training and management of the okada drivers, and use technologies e,g gps,ict etc, did u know there are okada in london? just google motorcycle taxi and u will be amazed with what u can find.
i am doing a postgraduate research on the impact of this informal transport and would welcome ppls views.
    Thanks

  71. I believe good leadership involves putting sentiments aside when making decisions for the good of your constituents. Because they helped campaign for him, of which i believe most of them were paid for, doesn't mean he should turn a blind eye should they become a menace to the society. It is not going to be easy, but Nigerians adapt pretty fast and to be honest city life isn't easy and definitely isn't for everyone. Lagosians need to stop complaining and help return that state to its former glory.

  72. No be this same okadas..made Chidinma from koko mansion swerve and die anyhow!!..dem types of acciddent are synonymous with Okadas..reckless indeed..as a commuter you might not feel the impact but as a driver they are a MENACE TO SOCIETY!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Restriction means they are not banned but can only operate on certain roads, am sure d families of those who have lost loved ones and sum who can no longer use deir limbs would think differently. Some bad incidents can be prevented so let's not add sentiment to it at all, after election he told dem to use helmet bt majority don't even know d essence, rules were made but the okada men ignored. All anti ACN re hating on fashola instead of working with him to make Lagos safe. Some of the illiterate Hausa okada riders have packed their machines in 2 lorries and left lagos, it's not the end of the world after all they migrated from various states were they we're banned. We shud only urge fashola to find an alternative instead of been spitefull, with good roads and less traffic okadas will not be missed ask the people in Abuja.

  75. Na wa o! Its saddening to see such pervasive ignorance amongst the "leaders of tomorrow." One of the major problems we face in this country is the intellectual laziness amongst our youth. How hard is it really to source for and obtian relevant, accurate information on a topic before we open our mouths and spew forth rot and stench??

FYI, Gov. Fashola has not "banned" the use and/or operation of okadas in Lagos. All he has done is to restrict them from operating on A FEW specific routes and if you compare those routes to the ones on which they can still continue to operate you will see that it is quite a small percentage.

Also, if any of you cares to do your fact checking you would see that the REASON behind this restriction is that the govt, after conducting its research, has discovered that these routes pose the greatest danger to human lives and well being as a result of the recklessness of these okada riders. So the under-riding reason for the restriction if our collective safety.

Now in respect of the destruction of the okadas by govt, if you had cared to make even surface enquiries, you would have learnt that these bikes were confiscated for various traffic offences over a period of time and the riders merely took off and never showed up to follow the due procedure to reclaim their okadas. Do you expect the govt to keep them indefinately? Come on people! Use your intellect here, not your emotions!!

I would be the first to admit that destoying them may not have been the most beneficial way to dispose of them. The govt could have auctioned them thus raising crucial revenue for the state. However, this may also defeat the govt's obvious intention to reduce the number of okadas on the streets of Lagos.

What the Lagos state govt needs to do now is properly and effectively regulate the use and operation of okadas in the state. Ensure that those operating them are well qualified to do so. Ensure that they have a solid understanding of traffic laws. And create an awareness that theses laws apply to them just as they apply to any other commuter on the streets of Lagos.

God bless Lagos state! God bless Nigeria!!
